It sits roughly between the two cities...

It is quite a bit closer to B'more than DC. It is right outside of B'more. It is often cheaper to fly in and out of BWI. But you need to make sure to take into account travel time back from DC for your return trip. And particularly pay attention to time of day. Rush hours are a lot longer around the DC area. And that part of town (BW Pkwy, 95) if often really bad, trafficwise.
As an aside, and if you care, it is only about one exit up from Arundel Mills. I have not been there since they opened the casino, so I do not know if that has brought in some unsavory crowds or just worse traffic and parking. But DuClaw has some good beers! ;)

EDIT: Actually, I think there is a DuClaw at BWI now as well. I have no idea what terminal, though.

As a former Central Maryland native, I can help verify that BWI is indeed not actually within the city limits of Baltimore. It's about a 15-20 minute drive from the airport to downtown Baltimore and about a 30-40 minute drive to downtown Washington, depending on the traffic. There's also a train station on the aiport grounds with Amtrak intercity service and MARC regional commuter train service to Washington DC and to Baltimore and areas north. The DuClaw is in the southwest airlines part of the airport. It's actually on the side before security, so any friends and family dropping you off can join you there for lunch or dinner. I've eaten there a couple times - the food is really good!

I confess, I didn't check the geography. The name "Baltimore Washington International Airport" really threw me...
The airports are fine...but if you are going for a DC tourist trip, I'd highly recommend flying into Washington Reagan.

If you can get a window seat overlooking the Capitol Mall, it's an amazing approach / departure view.

Sheesh -- this is making me second-guess the family trip to Washington, D.C. (via BWI airport in Baltimore) we'd planned for February!
Don't second guess it. You'll be fine. BWI is in the county, not the city, in a safe area, and Baltimore City is fine as long as you don't go in any seedy areas and don't go during New Years or times when everyone s getting drunk. DC is definitely fine.

It's a sore spot that Washington is included in our airport. Baltimoreans don't like being lumped in with Washington. Goodness, we are NOT part of Washington! One of the reasons the Redskins/Ravens rivalry exists.

You all will be soon enough! The progression of suburbs steadily moves north! The infection of Virginia is complete, you all are next! :p

Don't even joke. Not happening though. Legal issues. Not that I should care since hopefully I'll be in Florida permanently in four years, but whatever. We are Baltimore, not DC.

I wish I was joking. Give it another decade or two, the pattern is obvious. SoCal has been through it already, as has the SeaTac area and much of the Chicago area. NYC is our grandpappy.

It wouldn't surpise me if, one day, Baltimore is a burrough, and NOVA / southern maryland (including Baltimore) break off into their own state, because they have almost already become one urban center.

But, we are decades away from that.

I really doubt that. I can see the city spreading up to Towson (not hat it maters, I already HATE Towson), but the government has set in many laws trying to prevent sprawl.

Wanna bet on this? I have 30 more years to wait. :p I've already seen what's happened to that area since 1990.

I'm not a betting woman. The area has expanded, but given that I've gone through school here and have lived here all my life, I know the people in this area and I really see legal issues preventing it.

I would not count on that. Governments of all levels only see dollar signs nowadays. If it behooves them financially to allow building - and change laws to do so - they will. Gambling was fought for a long time, and that casino is now there at Arundel MIlls.

And sorry, I also disagree that I think only the "seedy" parts of Baltimore are dangerous. The Inner Harbor has been seeing a real uptick in violent crimes, as has Little Italy. I guess the criminals really have no fear or the Mob just ain't what it used to be. :p

Dang, this discussion has made me really want some desserts from Vaccaro's.

I will agree with this assessment. Fredericksburg is now considered Northern Virginia and with the rail line soon connection Dulles to Dc will just increase the the population. I can't say for Maryland, but Virginia and northern virginia already feel like different states.
