One Little Spark...
I didn't know there was a city named Ontario in California until just a few years ago, when my mom, my sister and I went there for a conference for Christian women and girls LOL. Canada was the first thing that popped into my head! I fairly recently found out there's a street called Los Angeles in Downtown Los Angeles.

I don't have time to learn the multiple cities in this country haha.
Exactly. So, people in general thinking Disneyland is in LA when they don't know the area isn't all that far fetched.

I guess you could say that.
I'm working on a project for one of my classes that's on Disney Parks and Resorts and when I tried to explain to my group that Disneyland is in Anaheim California I was greeted with blank stares...I said it was about an hour or so south of LA and they said, "Oh, okay! We got it."

It's not even that far away. More like 25-60 minutes way, depending on which part of Los Angeles one is coming from.

I blame LA tourist videos for that common mistake among people. Disneyland is always featured in those tourist videos.

Prime example. Skip to 5:25. This is a Los Angeles vacation travel video, and although the narrator makes it a point to say Disneyland is in Anaheim, he doesn't bother to mention it's not located in Los Angeles County.

I get why your family has this view of LA and the area around DL. It is very understandable, I would might not want to go back to a place with that negative association for me either.
But I agree with those who say it is not that bad around DL. Bad experiences can happen everywhere. Shootings happen all over DC, even places that are considered relatively safe. There has been at least one shooting and stabbing at the National Zoo. Heck, a Congresswoman was mugged just last night. Problems can happen anywehre, particularly in major cities.

Let's put it this way: I'm an 18-year-old, not particularly tall or intimidating girl. I felt perfectly fine walking around Downtown Disney by myself at night.
...said the girl from Baltimore. ;) (I know, you are from the County, not the city itself).
I would consider B'more waaaaaaay more dangerous. Even the formerly "safe" areas like Inner Harbor. I would be far more concerned about going there than DL. There was a time I went to Little Italy quite a bit.

My husband told me the area right around it was nice you get a little bit away, not nice and they are not the only people who have told me that. I actually wanted to go back sometime since I was a little girl when I went and CA didn't even exist then, but too I've been scared off by people who live or have lived there.
Ever been to New Orleans? Two steps to the right or left and you are in scary land. Solution, don't step sideways.
I guess that is why my brother in law was shot and killed by gang crossfire very close to Disneyland and why my husbands parents moved the family to Texas because of it.
Texas? Seriously, where everyone has a gun and the law are pretty lenient about who and why you kill someone. Frying pan to fire. Every area has a dark part, especially in a big city, but, it also happens in rural areas as well.
Why don't you go and see for yourself?

Did you know Orlando has made 'most dangerous cities' lists multiple times? I doubt Anaheim has ever made it on one of those lists. I'm from CA, and based on things I've read about Orlando in terms of crime and all that negative stuff, I should be afraid to visit. But I'm not. Orlando making 'most dangerous cities' lists doesn't scare me and it's not going to stop me from ever visiting it. One cannot live in fear like that.
Like Disneyland not being in LA, the same thing applies to WDW. It is always called Orlando but it is not in Orlando. Kissimmee has some rough parts as well, but for the most part tourists have no reason to be there

Baltimore is definitely more dangerous. Getting better, but it's one of the reasons I don't go down to the city by myself. I stay in the county areas. But if you're with someone, preferably a male that you trust and you stay with the crowds in Baltimore, you're fine. I really only head down there for special events like Orioles games.

Sheesh -- this is making me second-guess the family trip to Washington, D.C. (via BWI airport in Baltimore) we'd planned for February!

There is one thing that we are much better at then any other place and that is over thinking everything. Don't do foolish stuff, stay with people and the odds of you coming out alright are close to 100%. Yes, bad stuff happens but you could be sitting in your home watching Sesame Street and have someone break in and do you harm. The motto of this country should be "We wouldn't be so paranoid if the whole world weren't out to get us". Heck, I once drove around Miami with a car rented from Alamo back in the 90's. That was when tourist were being singled out and hijacked. I'd rather live in fear then fear to live.

As an Orlando resident and visitor to California, I can tell you that living here is far more dangerous than visiting Anaheim and the area around Disneyland. On all of my visits I've walked around the areas surrounding DL at night and never once felt unsafe. I'd do that over walking around here at night anytime.

In regards to the original subject, Disneyland did go through a rough spot, but they were only one park, and they still received new attractions now and then...now it's the crown jewel park as it should be, with a fantastic second gate...and WDW which is the crown jewel resort is stale, with a Magic Kingdom park falling behind the other 4 MK style parks (DL, TDL, DLP, HKDL) relatively quickly and 3 secondary gates becoming incredibly stale and lacking in attractions. While I think Disneyland park deserves to be the best, I think the MK should have the most and some of the best attractions. After all, it is the worlds number one most visited theme park. It makes more money than any other Disney theme park, so it should be reinvested into heavily. As for when will the tides turn? Right now it's looking like its going to be DL getting the love until about 2017...when WDW is finally scheduled to get some new love and attractions. I know people hate Avatar, but if done right It will help DAK. As for Epcot, the place is a mess and is turning into nothing more than a big shopping center. DHS needs its major overhaul-DCA style. If it doesn't get at least five or more new attractions, the place is going to keep falling behind.

Universal isn't playing around, and as others have said, they're here to play ball. With new attractions planned every year until 2020, as well as more hotels, an expanded Citywalk, a new Waterpark, and a potential third gate, they plan to make a major dent in WDW's attendance...unless TDO wakes up and Burbank allows for MAJOR expansion and attractions.

I've lived in the DC Metro area for 29 years and worked in downtown DC for 14 years, and never experienced a violent crime. There are certain areas to avoid at certain times. There's one annual event at the National Zoo that I would avoid, but it's not in February. Otherwise the zoo is as safe as anywhere.

Which is to say, could be not safe at any moment. Avoiding that "one annual event" - as you refer to it - is no guarantee. So you should always be on your guard, everywhere. That Congresswoman grew up in NYC and said she was never a victim of violent crime in NYC. When I lived in Arlington, a friend of a friend had acid thrown in her face in her apartment parking lot in Crystal City. My point is not to freak people about DC, but that you should be on guard everywhere.

Keep your electronics packed away on the Metro, folks!

But my original point was that the DL area is, IMO, far and away safer than DC or pretty much any other major city.

Btw, they are apparently now investigating whether the attack on that congresswoman was not an attempted robbery, but (and some others) in fact morons playing the "knockout game". They stole her purse, so I don't see it, but there have supposedly been other attacks without theft in that area.
So now (and not just in DC) you need to not just worry about people trying to rob you, but also idiots sucker punching you or conking you on the head just for the thrill of it. B/c apparently kids are "bored" and need new thrills.:mad:
