Oh, those poor Ingalls girls...

At one point,we were driving down the road, and saw what at first looked like a piece of a palm frond or something in the middle of the road. When we got close enough to see, it was a very small gator sunning himself. He just scampered away.

What if the manatee consents?

Nemo, all those pics are awesome! I've been to Merritt Island and had no idea all that was there.

There's a little road called Black Point Wildlife Drive where you'll see a lot of birds and animals, then the manatee spot is about 4 miles from the end of that road. It's all part of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. It's just outside of the Space Center, in fact I believe that KSC lies within its boundaries.

On a sad note I wanted to report that we had to say goodbye to my beloved dog Franklin yesterday. Those who actually read this entire thread may remember he broke his leg back in June and we were told he had an aggressive form of bone cancer - they gave him 2-3 weeks. He recovered somewhat from the bone break and was doing OK but in late October we noticed a bump on that leg that got progressively bigger, until the point where he lost use of the leg entirely. He has been stumbling around the house for weeks but started showing noticible signs of pain. We knew his time had come. Thanks to everyone for your support when he was initially injured and kind words in the past months. You guys are great.

On a happy note we were so distraught over the loss we took a drive to the pound yesterday. We felt the best way to ease the pain and remember Franklin's beginnings was to rescue another dog in need of love and care. We could save him, and he could save us, so to speak.

I'm facing the same sort of issues with my 18 year old cat. Which health problems do I treat to keep her comfortable, without going to extremes. And knowing that no matter what I do, the day when she will either die or have to be put down is fast approaching.

Right now she is staring at her cat bed. I don't know if she remembers that she can curl up and sleep in it. I'll try turning on the lamp that I've positioned over it (heat) and she if that jogs her memory.

I've gone through this with numerous pets over the years, but it never gets any easier.

It does not. I swore I would never get another pet because I didn't want to endure the grief. It took all of about 3 hours before we were driving to the pound. And they have SO MANY animals there in need of a home. How do you not take one home?

I'm so sorry. Pets really do take hold of our hearts.

How is the new pup?

They certainly do!

The little guy is doing great. He wasn't eating - and he's really small - so we were worried but this morning he started taking an interest in food and is playful as, well, a puppy! He's been home just about 36 hours and after around 12 hours was already using the paper to relieve himself. We're hoping that's a good sign!

So every morning there's a great blue heron who sits in the grassy bank of the pond outside our door here. He's kind of neat, and I often take pictures of him like this:

This morning it was a little chilly, and he was just not amused at all:

I love that little guy! He shares my sentiments about winter!
