What attractions went under the bulldozer during Walt's tenure?
I don't have that info handy, but I'd assume that some things did . . .

Tomorrowland was pretty much torn apart under his watch in 1966, although he wasn't there to see it completed by opening day in June, 1967.

Walt did approve the Midget Autopia being torn out to install the broad mall leading to It's A Small World in 1965. He donated the Midget Autopia track and cars to be used in a park in his home town in Marceline, Missouri, where they still exist to this day.

Phantom Boats left in 1957 to become Submarine Voyage in 1959. The Viewliner left in 1958 to be replaced by the Monorail in 1959. But the Submarines and Monorail were quite clearly huge improvements over what they replaced.

Other than that, not much met a bulldozers fate at Disneyland from 1956 to 1966. During Walt's tenure at Disneyland it was mostly just new attractions added on vacant land, or expansions and upgrades to things that already existed.

Just have to note that the Phantom Boats actually survived the expansion and construction of Submarine Voyage, and was shorter, but still in operation until the 80's I believe when it was refurbished into a Disney Afternoon promotion, and was then shuttered.

But attractions were always closing/changing/being swept away in Walt's day.

So, OK. If Walt was OK with it, so be it.

I think a few things should be preserved, but I'm not gonna
hang on too tightly.

Heck, I'd love to see America Sings again . . .
Adventure in Innerspace . . .
Dreamflight . . .
Horizons . . . .
JII original
WOM . . .

etc.

But, the fact that those things aren't there isn't a game killer for me . . .

Or, at least let EPCOT hold onto some classics...

Too MUCH change, there...

Let me play devils advocate here for a moment. Didn't Walt want change in his parks, espically Epcot? As much as I loved those attractions too, part of me wonders what he would have done.

Of course he did. And of course these things should be changed- But in a productive way.

There's still something to be said about nostalgia, especially in Disney Park, even if it is one about the Future.

What I was insinuating at was to leave the core of the ride, the feeling it creates, and the type of presentation, intact. Change the content, though, keep that relevant, and in this case primed for the future and tomorrow. :D

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said ... 'in a productive way.' :)
Hopefully they will remember that. :D

Just listened to Inside the Magic where he went to the post Parks and Resort press conference. One thing that was brought up by an Imagineer was that One Man's Dream could be receiving a major refurbishment and would be used as a form of Blue Sky Cellar.

I'll just assume that I'm clairvoyant and that they didn't take the idea from me.

I have also updated this info and other info on the Upcoming/Rumored Projects thread

That's what it's all about in the end.

Thanks.

That's good for DHS, but we need one for NewFL! :D

Is D23 worth it?

Hi,
I know that this thread has not been posted to for a while, but being the "Official D23 Thread", I figured this might be the best place to start. My search for some reason does not return any results when I enter D23, even though I know it's all over the forum.

Now that some time has passed since D23 was announced and implemented, I have a basic question.

Is it worth the $75 / year? Any members out there want to chime in? I know that is a very subjective question and what is worth it to some might not be to others. I'm just mainly looking for a "gut feeling". Do the benefits tend to outweigh the cost, etc? Do you get enough special that makes it better than just joining all the other forums / discussions / fan sites, etc?

*looks at your location* Nope, save your money. Unless you live in LA or can hop on a plane to WDW at a moments notice the "events" will be totally useless to you. You can purchase the magazine at any book store or Disney store even without a membership.

Perfect. That is what I thought last year when this was first announced, and how I had been leaning when re-thinking about it this year.

Thank you!

I live in the Chicago area and am a D23 member. Although I don't get the value that those in Orlando and LA get, because I haven't been able to take advantage of any of the special events, I like my membership. I get the magazine, which I'd probably buy anyways, and with each issue, there is a special D23 member perk that you don't get in the stores (my retro Land patch is cool, for example). And some of the merchandise that is available to buy is cool, too. Plus, I'm in a financial position where a decision to spend $75 is one I can take rather lightly. If money was tight at all, I'd drop the D23 membership in a heartbeat, because the really special stuff (events) are too hard for me to take advantage of.

Thanks. That gives me insight as well. At this time, $75 is a lot to spend to get a magazine and the opportunity to buy some special merch.
In a few years, if things go right (you wouldnt want to buy a condo in the Chicago area would you? HA! JK! I just moved from there last year and am still a Cook County property tax payer), it might be a fun addition for the family.

I am a D23 member and have taken advantage of the club and have, in my opinion, have gotten my $75 worth. Having said this, I believe the smartest thing to do is save your money. If you like the magazine r if you think there's something in an issue of use to you by all means pic it up at barnes and noble or something. You don't really need a subscription. The perks like the epcot patches are nice but does not supplement the additional cost.
I have a feeling D23 as we know it will not be around in the way we know it after the 2011 expo for various reasons:
1. According to my sources there was a big drop on membership between 2009-2010. There are currently 12,000 members (roughly) and I don't think that's a number that can sustain reason to be in business.
2. I don't see that 12,000 people growing. It's tougher to get people signed up this late in the game and with each thing they announce they tend to tick enough people off that they just can't see the point where they just can't justify renewing their membership.
3. The events all have limited capacity so being a member to go to the events is not enough, you have to clear your day to ensure you are at your computer 15 minutes before tix go on sale just for the chance to get in. This proved to be extra problematic when Disneyland hosted their star tours event last month and the link to sign up wasn't active so the people who wanted to go couldn't even sign up.
This is a division of the company that claims it is made for fans when it truly is not. Everything that comes with membership has an added cost, even if they say it's free like florida's dvc event or their star tours ever has a $5 tickey processing fee.
I strongly urge you to check out Disneyana fan club. There might be a chapter in your area and even though it's not Disney run it is operated by Disney fans and is a club for fans by fans and is non profit

Could that be true? only 12,000 members? They must really be struggling to get members. Hardly seems reasonable to make a magazine that virtually nobody is reading.

That is a very small subscriber base.

Maybe they are selling a lot online or at a retail store?
