OC Register - Disneyland and Universal Studios ask Newsom not to finalize theme park reopening plans just yet

>>Re “Newsom not in a rush to set guidelines for theme parks” (Oct. 8):

I am very frustrated with the way the reopening of theme parks is being handled.

I am a believer in science and the danger of this virus, but the hypocrisy with which the reopening of this individual sector is being handled is ludicrous.

While people are grouping in malls, restaurants, movie theaters, and salons, the doors of these mostly outdoor experiences remain closed.

The locations have shown they are ready to open safely and following all available guidance. I was appalled to read a quote from Gov. Newsom saying he was letting science and data make the determination on opening.

As a resident of California I am requesting the governor release his specific concerns and thought process.

To continue to hold back guidance at this point is unfair and illogical.

I know Gavin thought it was a brilliant and very pretentious California "We can do everything better than everyone else" thing to do sending his Top Men on vacay to Florida and I also understand that inspecting operation of WDW parks makes a certain amount of sense, as it's the same company, MK is sort of like DL but bigger and with fewer attractions, I guess MGM is your DCA kinda/sorta equivalent, yada yada run-on sentence. They will utilize similar procedures and it's the same company. I get that.

But, really, shouldn't they be observing Universal? The setup there is closer to DLR than WDW. WDW is really nothing like DLR. Universal is in a city, with a big parking deck leading to the shopping and dining area that connects the two theme parks and various hotels. Sound familiar? It's because Universal Orlando is just like DLR, only with E.T.

>>“I know a number of people are continuing to wonder when that guidance is coming out and I like to say, ‘It will come out when we’re ready,’” California Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Ghaly said. “We’re working closely with our industry partners making sure that we take all feedback, use our own information from visits to operating parks in other states and then some visits here in parts of California to understand how those plans will come together.”<<

>>“In terms of the California visits, those are upcoming, and together the information and the dialogue with our theme park operators across the state will help us land in a place that I think we can all feel confident is based on the best and most up-to-date information,” Ghaly said during the news conference.

The delegation will include the California Department of Public Health, California Division of Occupational Safety and Health and the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development.<<

>>“We look forward to compiling the information from those visits, having ongoing dialogue so we land with the guidance that really does make sense,” Ghaly said during the news conference. “I haven’t gotten the report back on what their findings and experience was, but the reason why we sent people is to really understand in action how a park operates, how the community around it functions with the park open in a time where we’re facing COVID transmission and really how it plays out not just within the park, but beyond.”

Newsom’s administration plans to compile best practices from the Florida theme park trip.

“We’re trying to get a better handle on what we’re being told, what we’re reading about, and our own concerns and our own environment as it relates to what makes our theme parks distinctive and unique,” Newsom said during a news conference this week. “What’s worked in their states and what hasn’t worked in their states as it relates to guidance, as it relates to mandates, as it relates to messaging.”

The “stubborn research” done by Newsom’s team in Florida will help inform California theme park reopening guidelines.

“I want folks to come back and tell me what they saw, what their own experience was,” Newsom said during the news conference. “Because this is serious.”

California theme parks have been left waiting on the sidelines while other segments of the economy have reopened under Newsom’s four-tier Blueprint for a Safer Economy.

“We will continue to lead with public health, we will continue to look at our data, we will continue to look at where each theme park is in their counties so that we make sure that when the guidance does come out, it’s appropriate and continues to follow the whole frame to our new blueprint, which is slow and stringent moving forward,” Ghaly said. “Making sure that we do that safely and methodically.”<<
He said a lot without actually saying a single thing.

At least Rocket Rods operated longer than Ring Races, which is still Standing but not Operating. It only operated from 10/31/2013 to 11/3/2013.

At least they admitted that the coaster was not not economically viable.

Honestly I'll be happy when this whole pandemic is over and we can just go back to blaming Disney for not redoing Tomorrowland and bringing back Peoplemover.

Agreed.

But you know what would be great?!?

Sacramento releases their report on their top secret investigative trip to Orlando theme parks, and it is just a big binder full of notes like this...

"The Florida version of Pirates of the Caribbean has a far superior queue, it really pulls you into the show. But then the ride itself is a pathetic Cliff's Notes version of Walt's brilliant original. It's only 7 minutes long. They only have one drop, and it's really just a short slide that can't even be called a drop. The ending scene is awful."

"We were impressed with Haunted Mansion's brick exterior, but they had turned off the Stretching Room scene and they were just looping the Socially Distanced queue through there that led straight to the load belt. And the sunlight was streaming in from the entry doors, ruining the entire scene. We did enjoy the additional Library scene once on the ride, however."

"I don't know what they did to the Hub, but it looks like crap. If they got a good deal on Astroturf down at Home Depot, the least they could do is sweep it clean once in awhile."

"The condiment bar at Tomorrowland Terrace was actually quite nice. We enjoyed the hot cheese sauce."

Please, please, please let that be what Sacramento's report is!
