NYT: "Universal....Takes Aim at Disney"

Why aren't they capable of doing that? I just don't get it. I know it's true what you just typed. They always seem to have such inflated prices for projects. What would cost Universal or a lot of other theme parks a lot less to do, Disney always seems to find a way to make it more expensive than necessary. It can't be from materials...steel is steel, wood is wood. They are going to have the same price regardless of who is buying. Do the imagineers themselves just demand pay that way more they they are worth (at this point in time)?

It isn't inexpensive to hide show buildings. Just ask Universal.

Probably not just yet. They are being fast tracked but not that fast.

I think the other 'thing' Lee mentioned will miss the 60th. But it'll be worth it.
The next D23 Expo is August 2013. If something is being "fast tracked" I would expect it to be announced by then.

Please, folks (at least those who can think rationally and aren't addicted to P-Dust), RE-READ what Lee posted. It correctly states the situation in both Anaheim and Orlando. Accurate and concise and he didn't even take a shot at mindless fanbois (like some evil, vile Disney bashing Spirits would). Just read it ... and trust it.

That is all.

You and others claimed nothing new was coming to the MK "for at least 5 years" a few weeks before the FLE was announced.........so..............

Or Disney... have you just completely blocked out all the previous posts explaining that Disney has show issues as well? Including at the MK? You are such a hypocrite. And those costs don't get that astronomical just because they are hiding show buildings either. Yet again, you are trying to derail a perfectly legit convo with an absolutely inane statement that you can't back up whatsover.

Again, we need to see things as they are done now during the Lasseter era. The FLE and Carsland being perfect examples of how it should be and is now being done. I live in the present. It is a little late to fix the Soarin building but it appears they learned their lesson from that and other mistakes of the past.

I was looking at the latest aerial pics of the FLE today and they have gone to great lengths to hide the mermaid buiding from the Storybook Circus so that is proof of what I speak.

Hopefully Uni will use phase 2 of potter to hide that show building.

On a side note, there are also new pics of IoA. I am always suprised by how small the castle is on the potter building. So it probably wouldn't be too expensive to hide the show building behind some rockwork.

Also noticed in the pics that the area between the HM and Pan that is being plussed is MASSIVE! That should be an amazing amount of landscaping and rockwork. But then obviously Disney always goes that extra mile to hide elements that would otherwise ruin the 'show' in the Iger/Lasseter era.

I love being a malcontent (first I'll have to look up what it means!);)

BTW, are you the world-famous Frank Lapidus that was supposed to fly Oceanic 815 on 9/22/04?

I cant neither confirm or deny that. Nor can I can confirm or deny that I am the same Frank Lapidus who piloted Ajira Airways Flight 316 which mysteriously vanished for several months with five members of the infamous "Oceanic Six" aboard.

Because there are NO upgrades coming/planned for either/both attractions.

There also is nothing of substance greelit for any of the other parks. NOTHING.

The only thing that may happen (until Iger leaves the company, at least) is Avatar at DAK.

I don't know if you can answer this but how likely would you say it is that Avatarland is going to happen at present? Could Iger's imminent departure from the company have any bearing on it's future or the extent to which the company is willing to invest in it given that Iger will be gone by the time it is projected to open (if it does open)?

Dude he doesn't even know about the work happening on the KS's. And he new nothing of the massive FLE project mere weeks before it was announced. I fear you are waisting your time with that one.

And the only reason he addressed you at all is because he is an attic for trying to sidle up to the famous or the infamous. So he can then name drop. Sad. Especially since you are not THAT FL.

So you give Disney a pass on their past issues but not Universal...still pretty hypocritical. The castle isn't that small. No they weren't going to build a Cinderella's Castle size castle but they didn't need to. I'm not sure if they could cover the show building. There just isn't enough room, which isn't exactly Universals fault. Also, I wasn't even talking about Soarin'...you blather on usually about Main Street and how we are getting a whole new Main Street, blah blah blah...and yet even with those buildings you can see there ugly backs. That's never been fixed and could be fixed, especially given how recently they were working on it.

And yay! New rockwork! I know what I'd take given the choice between rockwork and a new rides. Money so well spent. I'm not saying that new landscaping is bad for that area. But seriously, they could have done so much more than they are.

Why don't you wait and let one of the experts reply to the question?

If it could be done cheap rest assured they would have. Just look what happened to the original potter budget.

I don't need an expert to tell me 2 plus 2 is 4.

Uni could have bought a real castle in Europe, moved it to Orlando and reassembled it for authenticity but there is a limit to such projects. I have never noticed the MSUSA backstage problems so I can't imaging it is a major issue.

Except...
Disneyland has two major attractions being fast tracked through development, and a very major project in the early stages for elsewhere at the resort. (The two Disneyland attractions to be ready to counter USH's Potter.)

Currently in development for WDW?
Avatar (maybe) for 2016 or later. (Meaning Iger won't be around by the time it opens.)
A makeover for parts of DTD.
Multiple DVC projects.

(I didn't include NextGen because that is more for Disney's benefit than for guests.)

This speaks volumes of the difference currently between Anaheim and Orlando. Thank you very much for the information and confirmation. It's quite interesting to think about!

Why do people continue to waste time with this clown?

He hasn't been to the parks in years, he admitted pages back he was trolling, and uses terribly written articles from sources that wouldn't know a theme park from a hole in the ground.

Seriously, you'd have a better chance at convincing TDO to spend decent money on the parks.

Just like many many people do not notice the FJ show building...they just see the castle because you know, it was designed to draw people's attention to it. But that's besides the point...my point is that you keep giving Disney a pass and not universal. You just did it again with your statement about main street. Be consistent or you are just a hypocrite.

But anyways back to my question...which I would love answered by someone who has actual insight into why things become so expensive when it comes to Disney imagineering. :)

I'm just holding Uni fanbois and the potterites to the same standard they insist on doing with the house of mouse.

Difference is, more often than not, Disney exceeds their own standards. And with increasing frequency under team Iger/Lasseter.

It is not my problem this truth causes people heartburn.

UGH. You are not an expert. Given the last time you were actually in the parks, my 5 year old cousin, who just went to Disney, is more of an expert than you. That comment you just made is basically just your typically load of waffle...another #6. Congratulations.

Your comment makes no sense in the context of martin's original post...who, you know, has actual insight and my actual question to him. And it's the experts I'd love an answer from. :)

Obviously you need to take a long leisurely stroll down BV street. But that is step 7 in the jt04 12 step plan for the hopelessly cynical. It isn't good to try and skip any steps.

And yes I admit I like waffles. Especially Belgian. The choclate ones are good but the ones with freash fruit and fresher whipped cream are beyond description. You have to get them right of the grill or should I say iron for the best results. It helps if you are in Belgium too because that is the best place for waffles. I guess I will be eating lunch early now.
