NYT: "Universal....Takes Aim at Disney"

E.T. is kind of like their Small World, though. It was the first Universal attraction I ever rode. I was there the day before the park officially opened to the public and I thought it was amazing (it was about the only ride open) and UNI doesn't have a whole lot in terms of nostalgia classics like Disney does, so it would be a shame to see it go. But man, it does show its age.

As for JP, I still think a big refurb of the existing ride could go a long way.

NextGen - biggest waste since.... the last biggest waste. A billion dollar investment that is neither needed or warranted. DCA shows what can be done with this money properly.

Fantasyland expansion - too little, 22 years too late. Mismanaged from start to finish.

Potter 2.0 has already started. When FOTLK moves you can say the same for Avland.

And I still don't like dole whips.

Ohh... and you do know that Iger wanted to cut even more from both Cars Land and RSR? Lassater made him an offer he couldn't refuse and it wasn't a good one.

And please.... RSR is stunning. Yep. Shame we don't see that caliber in Orlando anymore. Well, not in WDW anyway.

What did Lasseter give up to ensure CL and RSR?

A bit off-topic, perhaps (but hey, this is Page 38 of this thread, most threads vere wildly off-topic before page 2). The real question is what effect, if any, is Jobs' death going to have on control of the company. Perhaps Spirit or Lee have some insights. Last I read, Jobs' wife was controlling the trust which owns 7.7% of Disney. It was my pixie dust dream that Steve would leave the shares to Jon Lassetter, or at least control of the trust. Steve, Walt, and John are/were all men of great passion for their product. If you haven't seen the Pixar documentary that plays on CNN (or is it CNBC?), I highly recommend. Jon reminds me a lot of Walt -- he was really into animation, including the latest and greatest methods. Where Walt invented the multi-demension camera, Jon really "invented" computer animation. Then, much like Walt wanted to bring his stories to life with rides, Jon did the same thing with Carsland. Cars (the movie) and Carsland are really Jon's babies. But the thing I don't know, is how much of a stomach Jon really has for the business stuff.

Iger seems to be one of the few who was able to dominate Job's big personality. He never did get much involved into the details of Disney, and seemed to take little to no issue with how Iger was steering the ship. There was the story that the Disney Store would be the first to use the iPod touch as a check out system, but that idea never panned out. The stores were also to be reinvented, again becoming a destination in of themselves, but I personally see little to get excited about in regards to the Imagination Park stores that do exist.

I agree, I don't think Disney (besides its media and how it could be used on Apple's devices), was of much concern to Jobs. That was simply not where his passion lay, and he had a big enough endeavor (Apple) to devot his attention to. Jobs's passion (or perhaps intellectual curiousity is a better term) in Pixar was because that was really a technology company when Steve first invested. But now, someone else is in charge of that 7.7% ownership of Disney (which is a staggering amount). Indeed, besides that fact that the stock is in trust, practically nothing is known about the trust.

jt04 believes that Walt had grander plans for Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom but a case of cold feet and budgetary concerns resulted in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea being plopped down instead. The new search features are amazing at what they can dig up!

That was so cool I had to hit the 'like' button! lol

Yes, I still think this is correct and that there is something to it. Which is why I celebrated when 20K closed. And I think someday it will return to WDW in a new form.

The problem with so many people requesting I clarify stuff in this thread and the mindless group think going on is that it is impossible to find the time to respond to everything. Sorry some of you make great points but as soon as I start to respond I get numerous other comments. I appreciate the strategy to muddy the water but it would be better to just have one poster ask the questions so we can hash out one topic at a time.

I fully expect though that this is too frightening for most to contemplate because of fear of the vortex. Bubbles is coherent and logical but she can't seem to stay focused on a single subject which is a shame. I enjoy her logic and constructive criticism. But obviously she greatly fears the vortex too.

Only truth survives the vortex.

You do realize Everest has about the same output? As do a few of the other rides at WDW don't you? Of course you don't...

Not to mention: Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Spaceship Earth, It's a Small World. None of which have a line that is as interesting and entertaining as Forbidden Journey's.

Again, the man has no idea what he's talking about. IGNORE him. And he'll go away.

I only change subject because you change subject buddy boy and address the wacky new things you have to say. You are the king when it comes do doing that. And I really don't want to lay claim to that crown.

Also, it's not group think. Everyone makes the same points because those points are what logic and good reasoning point too. No one is trying to "muddy the water" to confuse you. Though you seem to get confused easily.

And could you please provide some actual verifiable info to the theory of why 20K was put in? No...cause your back to making up facts...

I am trying and I have gathered that...though he did address me directly in his post above (I feel so special!) so had to defend myself there.

I have no fear of the truth vortex JT as the only one in yours is complete BS. :)

By ignore I mean put him on the ignore list. Works wonders. Then we can all get back to actual discussion instead of being side tracked by the ravings of a madman who hasn't been in the parks for what I assume is decades.

Ah, a single subject finally. We had a long debate and insiders were involved etc. Went on and on and nobody would or could answer how 20 K was decided on when the theming was so wrong for the location.

One poster promised to get an answer at D23 but then silence.

All we have is the fact that Eisner shut down what was probably most people's favorite attraction or at least in the top 3 at the MK for no apparent reason.

There is a ton of mystery surrounding every aspect of 20K and even our most seasoned insiders avoid the subject like the plague. I just find that extremely compelling.

The last thing I want is to sidetrack this thread even if I am not clear what it is even about. LOL

However I am sure the subject will come up again at some point met by the same curious silence.

I know I will regret this but can you elaborate on what you mean by this? Are you somehow insinuating that FJ is nothing more than just moving a bunch of people through like cattle?

No, Just goading the "Potterite" community which seeks to have me shunned. LOL.

I am sure it is the best queue ever. Basically though I appreciate Disney going the extra mile to revolutionize the queue experience and I hope it succeeds.

Spiderman's queue is the ride that makes you feel like cattle. LOL
