NuOrbis Brainstorming Thread - Project Five: Give My Regards to Broadway

I'm surprised no one has thrown this movie in the ring, especially after the success of Hadestown (which uses a lot of jazz influences in its score).

I do have two things to note though:
  1. My familiarity with jazz/gospel/blues is limited only to Hadestown. Is anyone in the group: 1) familiar with jazz/gospel/blues songwriting and lyricising (in general); 2) can compose short songs in those styles that would blend well with Randy Newman's songs from the movie (unless we don't need to do that. Thoughts, @mickeyfan5534?), and; 3) works well with the original Newman score?
  2. I'm sure that this will come up at some point, especially with today's conversations about Black/African-American artists/theatre in general. Would we as a team be comfortable working on adapting the film's story to stage, despite (correct me, if I'm wrong) none of us being Black/African-American? I feel that it might be tone-deaf working on a story about the sole African-American Disney princess without someone from the community guiding the story development. Granted, the film's story and songs were written by white authors, but the point still stands.

I personally agree that maybe that isn't the best idea but if the rest of the team is interested, I will go along with it!

Here’s an idea, how about an up musical? I can write some songs for it.

also, It probably wouldn’t be allowed, nor do I think we should go for it, but a musical about the life of doctor doofenshmirtz, his tragic childhood, and how his experiences made him into a better person would be really cool, yet pretty hard to take seriously at the same time. but still, the backstory of doofenshmirtz would make for a really good broadway musical.

I like the Haunted Mansion idea most, but I'm fine with any of the options tossed around.

Regarding our presentation: what if we used the flipbook to create a realistic-looking playbook? The project proper would be a page on what inspired the play, and then a songs list. But then we could also expand it out to include fake silly biographies for each "actor" as well as a bunch of random advertisements.

Did you mean a Playbill?

If I may throw something out, maybe we could do something with Pinocchio. I feel like we could add a few more songs into this story without feeling like its overstuffed full of songs.

Out of the ideas proposed so far, I'd be really excited with working with an Haunted Mansion musical.

PatF I think could turn out as a very vanilla Disney broadway musical. But, if you guys are more confident than me on making it something really great, let's go ahead!

Two things we need to decide ASAP:

1. PM. Any volunteers?

2. The show. There is a lot that goes into this prompt. We need to figure out the IP to start working on the show now

Here's a rundown of our IP choices so far, so that it wouldn't get lost in the thread. Let me know if I missed something.

  1. Dumbo - @AceAstro
  2. Pinocchio (new take on the material) - @Sharon&Susan
  3. Tron (as suggested by Tiki)
  4. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (new take on the material) - @AceAstro
  5. The Life and Times of Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz (Phineas and Ferb) - @ThatGuyFromFlorida
  6. Princess and the Frog - @montydysquith-navarro
  7. Up - @ThatGuyFromFlorida
Games
  1. Donald Duck in Maul (Maui?) Mallard - @Sharon&Susan
Rides
  1. World of Motion - @Sharon&Susan
  2. The Haunted Mansion - @gam3rprincess; leading choice so far

1. Dumbo
2. Haunted Mansion
3. Tron

are my choices. My only concern with HM is the number of songs the attraction has. Means more songs we have to plan out compared to Dumbo (or even Tron)
