Nope, Not Ready For Kids - An October 2011 Trip Report

Welcome to my trip report. This trip was planned as a sort of last minute excursion to WDW, although my mom and I had discussed the possibility of this trip for awhile it just never came about until what seemed like last minute. Our dates were October 15 - 21, staying at Pop Century. We chose these dates because this was the time that the school district that I work for took Fall Break. Leading up to the trip these dates made me nervous that the parks would be crowded considering the possibility that other schools would also be on break. We had a glimmer of hope when we were able to get most of the ADRs that we wanted; however, that would be short lived.

Now for your cast of characters:
Me - Rachel, 25, have been going to WDW since I was less than a year old. I work at a high school. My official title is Reading Assistant, but I pretty much do whatever they need me to do. I am certified to teach History and Language Arts. I received my Master’s in the Art of Teaching in July, and as a graduation present, my parents got me a Nikon D5100. I am still very much learning how to use it.

My mom - Disneybird, older than me, has been going to WDW since around the time it opened. She is responsible for not only my love of Disney but for planning all of my trips as well, thus far. After all of these years she still looks forward to trips to WDW as much as I do.

My grandmother - 81 and cruises around in a scooter while in WDW (which will be quite an ordeal throughout the trip). She finds any and every excuse to head to WDW for a quick getaway and will pay for just about anyone to go if they will take her.

My nephew - Victor, 4 ½, and he is very proud of that ½. This is technically his 3rd trip to WDW. He went for the first time in January 2010. That trip included a lot of our family. Plus it was my husband’s first trip to WDW, as well. You can read about it HERE. He went to the Magic Kingdom with my parents for a few hours in April, also. He is a lot of fun to be around, but we (my mom and I ) tried a lot during this trip to bring out the adventurous little boy inside of him during this trip. He is just a bit too cautious and practical for his age (parents fault).

My sister - Amanda, Victor’s mother, 33. She has gone to Disney quite a bit, as well. However, her trips have become farther between. She had a few vacation days that she needed to take before the end of the year, so she decided to join us for a few days and before flying back into Chattanooga.

For those of you who did not see my trip report, my husband and I were doing the Insanity workout system before I left on my trip. I told him that I would do the program as long as I could eat whatever I wanted to on the trip. I know that he was worried that I would just throw all of my hard work away over this week, but I reassured him that I would not go overboard on eating and would walk a significant amount during the trip. So, determined to prove my ability to maintain what I accomplished, I weighed myself the morning I left, took a pedometer, tracked the amount of steps we took, and weighed myself the morning after we returned.

So, there we all are. Now on with the show!

Yay, welcome back to finish Rachel! So much joy when I saw you on Twitter, and now a TR to complete.. you 'da best.

I'm glad you didn't lose Victor, because that probably would have been really bad - though I'm upset you don't have pictures of your moustaches. I feel like you would look very debonaire with a moustache, if it was the right one.

Can't wait to read the rest =)

Great report so far!
I'm so glad to hear you liked the Tusker House breakfast. We're not huge on breakfast either and have heard some mixed reviews as well but wanted to try it. Thanks for the confidence! Glad to hear they had a nice selection too.

I enjoyed it so much that I made breakfast reservations for our next trip. There was plenty that I found to eat, and I didn't even make it to every station. Definitely one of the best breakfast buffets that I have been to on property.

I feel so bad for waiting so long to finish this, but I was already committed and had to keep going.

I really was terrified that I was going to lose him. It would be just my luck. I wish I had pictures of our awesome moustaches. I had a pretty good fu manchu going on.

We woke up and went over to Animal Kingdom this morning. When we had my grandmother with us we drove practically everywhere because it was much easier for mom and me to lift the scooter in and out of the back of the SUV than it would be to load the scooter on and off a bus. Plus, I hate having to take up three seats for a scooter. This morning we did not have my grandmother with us, but we drove again anyways. It was so much more convenient to drive. I definitely plan to continue this trend as much as possible during any upcoming trips.

There were only a few things that we wanted to do at Animal Kingdom. Personally I wanted to walk the trails since we did not have the chance previously. First up we walked the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail.

We went into the Boneyard to let Victor play for awhile. I had never been inside of the Boneyard before, and I was really impressed with it as a good way to kill time and get some energy out for the kiddos. Victor loved it. He took off by himself and explored the whole area. He really enjoyed climbing up these ropes and probably did this more than anything.

The safari definitely made me want to get a better zoom lens for my camera. Maybe that will be my next purchase. For now pointing out small things in the distance will have to suffice.

After the safari we left the Animal Kingdom, picked up my grandmother, and headed to Epcot.

On our agenda for the day was to check out the Orchestra featuring members of E.L.O. They were there for the Eat to the Beat concert. We found out that they are going to be performing again during our trip in May at the Flower Power concert series. We are making plans to see them again. So, we killed some time in World Showcase while on our way.

We had decent seats for the concert. I looked around and it seemed that I was one of the youngest people there on my own free will, and yes, I knew every word to every song.

It was obviously a ‘best of’ concert, but I can’t complain. I love their music. In no particular order they played:
Evil Woman
Strange Magic
Telephone Line
Do Ya
Sweet Talkin’ Woman
Don’t Bring Me Down
Livin’ Thing

It was really good, and I am glad that we had the opportunity to go and see them. Victor really enjoyed seeing them play as well. He air drummed throughout most of it. Actually, a few days ago he told me that he needed to play me a song. So, he started playing his drums and singing me a song. The chorus sounded very much like the chorus to ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’.

After the show we headed over to the Japanese pavilion for our dinner reservations at Teppan Edo. This was the first time that we have ever eaten there and probably the last.

325.jpg

We were seated pretty quickly and had a nice view out of the window from our table.

337-1.jpg

After having our orders taken the chef showed up. Victor really enjoyed the show, especially the train.

For dinner I ordered the shrimp and steak, while I think everyone else at our table ordered either the chicken or steak. Our food was decent, but honestly, there are hibachi grills near my home that serve better food. Plus, our portion sizes were very small. I know, my American mind has exploded my idea of proper portion sizes way beyond necessary. However, I left the meal still feeling a tad hungry. For dessert I had the green tea pudding. I should say for dessert I pushed the green tea pudding around my plate. It just had a very odd taste. I took two bites, and I was good after that.

343-1.jpg

I know a lot of people enjoy this place, but it just wasn’t worth the money for us. I realize that not all of Disney cuisine is top notch, but that experience was less than subpar. I still want to try Tokyo Dining at some point, but I will have to write Teppan Edo off for the time being.

We walked out to an absolutely beautiful night at least.

Mom took Victor and my grandmother over to the Canadian pavilion to see Off-Kilter. I decided to stay around WS and take some pictures before meeting back up with them. I enjoy Off-Kilter but some quiet time to go explore was nice too.

Some nice old man offered to take my picture inside of the Moroccan pavilion. I need to figure out how to not get blurry pictures of me.

I met up with mom and they had a front row seat to Off-Kilter. Victor was rocking out, too. He absolutely loved hearing them. Mom said that the band members got a kick out of him during the show.

Once the show ended it was time for us to head out for the night. Sadly it was our last night in the parks, and we did not stop to watch any fireworks shows. It was mostly just feeling exhausted after dinner that kept us going back to the room early.

Just got caught up on your report! Awesome pictures! I can really see that as the trip went on you got more comfortable with your camera. You have some really great shots!!

I have found that when people offer to take pics of us with my camera, I put the settings to automatic so at least there is a little chance that the shots will be half decent. I know they won't be great but hopefully they will be focused.

Also wanted to add that I love ELO! Would have loved to see them!

Great report so far!

Your pictures are really great. I'm working on playing around with my new camare so when we go in April I'll have some sort of clue as to what I'm doing lol

The one thing that is keeping us from trying Teppan Edo is that we too have a bunch of really good hibatchi places around us. And they offer pretty much the same thing as TE. Tokyo Dining looks good though.

Victor is such a cutie! :)

Great report!

I'm really enjoying your photography. The interesting angles and experimenting with aperture, etc. have created many "shots" that I haven't seen before.

Looking forward to more.

Thank you! I'm still getting comfortable with my camera, but I'm enjoying learning how to use it.

I think I might have put my camera in portrait mode, but I'll have to start putting it in automatic.

ELO was great! We will definitely check them out again in May.

I would recommend putting Teppan Edo off. It really wasn't anything spectacular, and if you have great hibachi places around you, you might be disappointed like we were.

Great report!

Thank you! I tried looking at things differently this trip with my photos, which was a lot of fun to do!

This was our last day at the parks – so sad. It is completely bittersweet, especially when you know that you have a drive back home ahead of you. Part of me wanted to just stay here for as long as possible, the other part wanted to get on the road and back to normal life.

We arrived at the parks to another beautiful morning. Seriously, we had absolutely perfect weather this entire trip. A few days were even jeans and t-shirt days, which are my favorite kind of days.

I saw the 2011 Miss America shooting some sort of interview or promotional on a lawn near the castle. Her wig looked great.

Then, we headed over to ride the Haunted Mansion one last time.

397.jpg

We were running out of things to do in that we needed to leave soon and there was too much that we wanted to do to figure anything out. You know what I mean. So, we headed towards the front of the park, stopped in the Main Street Bakery, and hopped aboard the train to take a ride around the Magic Kingdom.

After our train ride we boarded the monorail and headed to Epcot. A golf tournament was going on at one of the golf courses.

424.jpg

During our trip in May, Jordan is hoping to be able to go golfing. I plan on getting him a twilight tee time for his graduation. He is really excited about the prospect of playing 18 holes while at Disney. This is a new hobby for him, and sadly the course he plays at here was severely damaged during the tornadoes last April.

We really only had one plan while in Epcot – eat at Le Cellier. So, we headed straight to Canada.

We waited for a good 30-45 minutes after we checked in for our reservation to be seated at a table. I got restless and started walking around taking pictures with Victor.

As soon as we reached the waterfall, Victor looked at me and said, “I have to potty.”
- Can you hold it a minute?
- No!
Alright, so off we went. The closest restroom that I could think of was the one inside of Le Cellier. We entered into the restroom to find a line had been formed because there are only two stalls, if I remember correctly, no more than 3 stalls though. Victor started talking to the people in line, which took his mind off of having to go to the bathroom. However, as soon as a toilet flushed his eyes got wide and he looked at me in complete desperation. A dozen thoughts went through my head at that moment thinking that he is going to ______ all over himself and there is nothing I can do about it. I just started telling him to hold on for another minute. The woman in front of us was nice enough to let us go before her. That was cutting it a bit too close for me.

Le Cellier was hands down the best meal that I had during the entire trip. I ordered the filet mignon with the mushroom risotto. The steak was so tender and literally just melted away in my mouth. The risotto was delicious as well. It had great flavor and consistency. I ate every single bite in front of me.

439.jpg

After lunch it was time for us to hit the road. It was sad to leave, but we will be back in a little less than 3 months now. Victor didn’t cry as we were actually leaving, but he did cry a few days earlier when he realized that we weren’t going to leave him at WDW. Yes, he did expect us to leave him at WDW with Flinkers.

It was a very different trip for me having Victor along. He was absolutely great though. He was a trooper throughout it all and rode almost everything we wanted him to ride. I would gladly go with him again, but being there with him just made me realize that I am not ready to plan my day in the parks around what a 4 year old wants to do. Selfish, I know, but at least I admit it. It was exhausting hauling it with a 4 year old in tote. So, kudos to all of you parents out there who do this on your trips.

One last thing before I close out my trip report. During the trip I took pictures of things throughout the parks that might possibly look like letters. I planned on making my three nieces on my husband’s side a Christmas present of their names spelled out with pictures from Disney. They have way too many toys, and I wanted to get them something that would not get tossed to the side after a few weeks of play. I tried to avoid as many literal letters as I could and stick with abstract interpretations, but with some letters I just didn’t have a choice. I was really happy with how they turned out. My sister-in-law loved them. Here are the pictures of the finished products.

This is great - it's actually so much fun to golf at Disney, they're really good to you! They've usually got deals on, too - play two courses for 1. I know Dad's playing all four Disney courses when he goes up in March - and we played LBV and Osprey Ridge (fav!) in 2009. Which course will you go with for times? They're all gorgeous =)

PS: I'm DOING THAT with the pictures.. they're amazing, I'm SO jealous that I'm not going back sooner. They're beautiful!
