Thanks for the link, Tigsmom. The article mentions the oil problem. I take it that area was the country's source and supplier?

Not the sole supplier, nor the sole refineries, but the area is significant; and a disruption there is significant to the market.

Shipping in general is also significant there. Disruption and damage of the port in general is also hurtful to the economy as a whole.

Looters are beginning to get more out of control. There has been one police officer shot in the back of the head, a couple of them stole a mail truck and driving around my city (next to new orleans) shooting random ppl for no reason, two ppl opened fire with AK-47s on the police stopping looting, and some ppl have reported them shooting at the helicopters attempting to save the ppl in the city. To tell you the truth, and excuse my language, but shoot those mother f'ers. This is plain ridiculous. My g/f's mom, who is stuck working at a hospital in New Orleans had her car stolen tonight with everything from bank statements, birth certificates, wedding and photo albums, and social security numbers. This makes me sick.
Wow... That makes me sick! Do you know how your house and everything made out, Sean?

I just heard that some search and rescue operations are starting to be called off because the chaos is making it too dangerous. :(

I heard that to. I also heard theat the looting got better but not by much.

it's the human race showing it's wonderful qualities...

Isn't that sad... for some people, human nature in survival mode boils down to this.

Luckily the MAJORITY of the people seem to be going the other way... wait and see...in another week, we'll be hearing all kinds of stories of bravery and honor and general goodness all around. It's disgusting, what some people are doing, but I have faith that they are in the minority.

Let's all hope so, Erika. You know, sometimes, I hear these stories, and they seem to get worse with each passing tragedy, and I wonder what world is my baby going to inherit. I mean, during that tsunami crisis, there were animals raping the homeless and parent-less children in the shelters. You can't sink much lower than that.

Despair or any kind of sense that things will not and cannot get better, will bring out the worst in people. :(

But at the same time I do believe that crises can bring out the best in people…especially when there is some connection with others and the sense that the community will help them through the crises.

My friend from camp that lives(d) in New Orleans called me not five minutes ago. I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am.

She told me that her and her family evacuated to a hospital in the city (her mom works at the hospital) and that babies were dying from dehydration and the sick were dying because they could not get dyalasis (sp). She said that they spent five days in the hospital, most of the time without electricity and with water flooding in. They were taken out today by army vehicles, in which they had to lie down so as not to be killed by shots of angry citizens that they passed. They are now on their way to Alexandria.

I am SO thankful for this news and I hope that our fellow WDWMagicians and everyone else who knows anyone in New Orleans hear of news very much like the kind I just heard.

Godspeed.

NEWS:

The AstroDome isn't taking in anymore refugees.

They are literally telling the buses (who have traveled on the road for 12 hours) to "find another city."

  :(

I'm alive and back in Louisiana. I'm staying with my family in Baton Rouge, and commuting to Slidell everyday. We still have a house. We didn't get any structural damage, but lots and lots of water damage. We have a 2 story house that is 13ft about the ground. The water was 20ft high. The entire first floor + the garage is ruined. We are in the process of cleaning it out. I had to throw away my Pal Mickey 2.0 today :( The good news is that we fared well compared to most people. Thanks for your prayers.

In response to my earlier posts, New Orleans should have done better. In fact, it was relatively fine until the 17th Street Canal began to leak. Look on the brightside though, New Orleans actually needed a fresh start. I know that sounds bad. It is a shame that this came at the expense of poor people. As for the looters, shoot them. They are criminals and are taking advantage of a bad situation. If someone sets foot near my house to do harm, they will suffer the consequences.

I'll try to post when I can. I have to use someone else's computer untill I get back to my dorm where I have high speed internet. Please keep SE LA and MS in your prayers. Call your representatives, senators, and even George W. Bush himself and tell them to get off their and help us. They have promissed a lot, but we aren't getting it yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even our Governor is making empty promisses. People are dying and suffering. We need help down here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad to know you're okay. Please allow this some time for help. For such a massive effort, it takes time to get organized. It's coming.

I understand that, but help should have been on the way long before now. The mayor of New Orleans was on the radio crying today. Things are terrible in New Orleans, Jefferson Parish, and St. Bernard Parish. Nothing is being done by the federal govt. Dennis Hassert said N.O. isn't worth rebuilding. That is a terrible thing to say.

what should have happened was that someone somewhere in authority should have had the foresight to realize that a category 5 storm was on its way and they should have begun a week ago to mobilize efforts and personnel. N.O. would have been relatively "okay" if the 17th St. Canal levee had not failed. No one could have anticipated that.

That seems to be the going consensus with the people I've talked to in recent days that "New Orleans isn't worth rebuilding." The damage in New Orleans is extreme and with all the criminal activity going on in New Orleans its going to make it harder for the recovery efforts to get underway. I am glad that you posted something on here and that things are ok. Just take it one day at a time. Look at the people who got racked by Hurricane Charley last August in Punta Gorda, FL. They thought they were at the end of their rope, but look at them now! A year later, they had a "Building The Spirit Of Punta Gorda" party (August 13, 2005). Even though I don't live in Punta Gorda, I went anyways because I saw the damage Charley brought forth on that area (I was donating my time assisting small businesses getting their businesses/computer systems online).

Who knows -- you may see me in your neck of the woods once you guys get power back and things are back to some sense of normalcy. For now, I made a $100 donation to the American Red Cross. Take care of yourself and your family! =)
