Ill feel better once we see him post, knowing he is back in NJ safe and sound. I hope he goes and gets checked out medically. I hope he recalls the second part of the week. I block out half a full, and forget details, I cant imagine trying to recall 10 days worth.

I have no revollection of running through the Bronx during the NYC marathon. LOL

I only recall about 25% of road running events. Ironically, I find myself remembering the majority of trail events, because you cant "check out" mentally for a minute. If you do, you have a swollen ankle like me the size of a golf ball. :) In the case of Nick though, that distance, Id be shocked if he recalls Thursday on. I sure hope he does, I want to hear all about it.

Thank you for keeping us updated Joel and Coryna!
No problem Beth. It was my pleasure and I enjoyed the thrill of waiting for a text or FB slaking his page wondering, "Why the hell is there no update? He has to have finished that loop by now!"

No problem. I was happy to be up there, seeing things first hand and sending the info along to Joel to get to everyone here on the boards. I have to say the organizers of the event were not great at getting info posted on FB. Alison was very FRUSTERATED at the lack of communication by PEAK RACES. I was not impressed by the staff that was there.

I cant imagine trying to recall 10 days worth.

I did take some video and pictures. I wanted to make sure Nick has something to remind him of his 460 accomplishment. At one point in the video I say "I am recording this because I KNOW you aren't going to remember any of it".
I will try and post some of the pictures later.

I was checking the Peak fb page and I couldn't believe how little info they were putting up. I was curious about how the other races were going and there was little to no info on them and barely any for the 500 milers. It was really horrible.

Horrible, that is an understatement...

I wasnt there first hand, but I will go off what Coryna told me, and yes, I would have liked to have seen a doctor or medical staff within a 25 mile radius on call if need be. Maybe there was, but when I got that phone call from Coryna Saturday night, at dinner, and I ran out of the restaurant so I could talk to her, I knew it was serious.

That was really nice of you to do for him. The whole trip up there really. Once he recovers, I'm dying to hear what he does recall firsthand.

I'm very interested to hear what he remembers and at what point things started to get blurry. I know Friday night he needed confirmation (more than once) from one of his pacer that Alison was actually there.

I couldn't believe how lackadaisical they were. They had the attitude like it was something people did everyday. Maybe doing these kind of events you need to have that type of attitude but
I mean I'm usually a nervous-nelly; Seeing Nick--my motherly instincts kicked into high gear. As much as I was there to be a cheerleader, I needed him to be OK.
While I was there they had another groups of racers (not sure how many exactly) start a 100 mile/50 mile/30 mile race. As the day went on, all I heard about was how many people were dropping out because of the heat. I was at the checkpoint when two women came in and told the race organizer tht they had passed a guy on the trail that need medical help. The guy almost seemed ed that he had to send someone out to check on the guy. There was no urgency in his questioning of the girls on the where and when of the situation. And then he looked at us and said "did you see how those two girls just bailed on him". What??

I had seen on fb a post where a girl was thanking multiple people give her gels, salt tabs and helping her down the mountain. She is recovering in the hospital due to her kidneys shutting down due to muscle breakdown products ( rhabdomyolysis) and severe dehydration. Yikes! You would think they would have medical help readily available for this type of race. Even in the best of circumstances, during a road race with optimal weather, you have people break down and need medical help. With the extremes found here it sounds a bit scary not to have competent help available. Doing these races is serious stuff! It can really take a serious toll on your body.

I saw that on FB too. Just reading about this casual attitude of the race organizers is shocking to me. I would think they would at least have a medical crew ready to give IV fluids at the site. I mean that's basic first aid for an endurance race. Heck, I keep an IV set up and fluids at our cabin which is about 50 miles from town, just in case we are hosting some guests and something stupid happens...

I know that people sign waivers assuming responsibility for their health during races, but i think the organizers have a certain level of responsibility to provide a safe and supportive environment.

I am overwhelmed. I just read this entire thread and the tears did not stop. Thank you to everyone who followed my adventure. Joel and Coryna, I will personally talk to you later. You are true friends.
I am happy with my 460 miles. It took Willy (my running mentor and previous 500 winner) to tell me I had to stop. I was destroying myself. I pushed myself over the limit and my body stopped working. That's the only thing that will stop me.
I came off of that mountain a different man. A better man. Report soon, but for now, thank you all. Much love.
