I don't think it has anything to do with the Ravens or Baltimore at all.

The ravens had PLENTY of uncharacteristic run ins with the police this off-season and you don't hear about any of that right now.

I'm looking at the general population - and shaking my head over how because there is a video circulating of the incident - that somehow that magnifies the severity of what he did, judging it, and how he should be punished.

My point is... all around Ray Rice other players were doing all kinds of bad things, including other much more serious cases of domestic violence... yet the general population was happy to read it in the sports news for a week and then go back to whatever sensation thing was in their newsfeed. But because there is a VIDEO of Rice's incident... everything changes and now the standards against him all change and he becomes the lightning rod.

Meanwhile... repeat offenders offenders go completely unoticed by the general population.

Less we forget - the tape didn't show anyone anything new in the terms of what Rice physically did to his wife. What the tape did was 'make it real' for people and visualize what they knew happened, but now they see it graphically and they get an entirely new emotional response.

It makes you ask... are people acting rationally?? Or are they getting caught up in things and acting in knee jerk ways?

I mean.. imagine if we said "Get arrested for murder... you goto trial, and get a minimum of 10 years. Get filmed murdering someone... you goto trial, and get an automatic life sentence"

The public is changing their perception of what is suitable punishment not based on the facts or crime.. but on how emotionally moved they are by evidence.

Did anyone say '6 games isn't enough?' after Goodell announced the new policy??

Maybe seeing it rather than just reading about it does wake people up to what a horrific crime this is - and if that's what it takes for some of these ignorant men to understand that, then media has won a huge battle.

There was nothing questionable in the video of Ray Rice. He hit his fiancee in the face, knocking her out. Your hypotheticals are like comparing apples to oranges. However, in those cases I would let the NFL do its own investigation, like it always does. I don't think they were walking around town asking the public what they thought Rice's suspension should be. They investigated the situation, and based on the evidence they found, banned Rice for two games. Then when the video was released they altered their banishment to fit the new evidence.

Ummm... you're missing a very important piece in there. between '2 games' and 'video released'

They suspended Rice for 2 games... then the public went ape-@$% so then they made a NEW policy for 6 games based on the public's reaction. They very much were aware of the public's response and it lead to the new policy.

And when the video was released - what new facts came to light that suggest 2 or 6 games were not enough? Rice never denied punching her in an argument. All parties involved have said the video does not differ from the tale of events shared with them during the investigation.

The video did not fundamentally change what Rice was suspended for - assaulting his wife with a single punch that knocked her out while both were in a drunk argument. NOTHING in that story changed.

What changed was the emotional response people got by watching it happen.

I have absolutely zero idea where you're getting the idea that we're saying the public should assign punishments.

So you are saying the public's response after Rice's suspension was announced had no influence on the situation?? The mob pressured the NFL AFTER his suspension was released.. and that continued scrutiny contributed to the swift action when the second video was leaked.

In Rice's case there is absolutely no way of seeing that he is not guilty. There is a video. Ray Rice hit his girlfriend in the face. She became unconscious due to that hit. I think that's enough to deem someone guilty of domestic violence.

And ALL of that was known when Rice was given a 2 game suspension. Are you forgetting no one denied the situation happened or what happened?? Everything you listed there they KNEW before the video was posted. They KNEW when they changed the policy going forward to 6 games for a first offense.

They all KNEW what the response would be when the video was leaked - hence the swift response to then cut him and suspend him. The video didn't change the circumstances or the facts THEY ALL KNEW that lead to him being suspended.

The difference is now the world got to watch it happen....

All sounds good.. until that power is used for evil. The power of leaking video to destroy people or hurt them further.. etc.

It's why terrorists don't just kill the hostage... they film it and broadcast it to the world. To extract an emotional response... to further the impact of their message.

That power can be used for both good and bad... but it will be used for bad more often then not if people let themselves be manipulated by buying into it and reacting harder and stronger.

So since you're not going to win this argument, you'll extrapolate it to terrorists??? Now I know you're truly nuts.

Pure emotional response.. vs seeing how the same methods are manipulated by both examples.

Seeing something is more powerful than reading something - we shouldn't let ourselves get caught up in that.

Or use the same manipulation in a different example since you get wound up by terrorists...

Player X gets accused of rape along with some other guy. They've had sex with some girl, claim it was consensual. The NFL investigates, meets with the victim, concludes the rape was real.. and take action against the player.

Now... a relative of the rape victim is not happy with the result of the NFL's action and thinks it should be greater. So the relative leaks a video taken of the men with the rape victim from the assault...

The public is outraged over the new graphic evidence of the assault.

Should the NFL now increase the punishment for Player X? They've already concluded he was involved with the rape and they had the victim's version of the story.

has the video changed the violation?? why should it change the punishment?

If there is video evidence of a rape removing all doubt, then there should be no question of whether the NFL should have done more. The players should be banned. Someone who does that deserves their life to be over.

You really aren't going to sway any of us and we are not going to sway you. So let's drop this before we all wind up on each others ignore lists.

I need to review my picks again - there have been a number of roster adjustments today that may (or may not) change my picks.

You're pretty confident in Dee Milliner, aren't you?

He's actually not starting. It will be good to see him play though. NY media was saying they can see the Jets running the ball well against the Packers and eating up a lot of the clock. I'm sure that's the plan but I don't see it being successful. I think Smith is going to freak out over the pressure and drop the ball (literally) - turnovers are going to be an issue.

I'm concerned about the Jets running game and the Packers inability to stop it. I'm not saying GB's defense is bad after one game, but there is plenty of room for concern. A dominant defensive performance would go a long way for this team. I can guarantee the Packers' gameplan is to stop the run and make Geno be a passer.

The Jets take a LOT of penalties. I have a bad feeling a long pass interference call is going end up killing them in this game. Stupid Kyle Wilson. I'm glad they won their first game because with the Packers this week then the Lions and Bears - I'm just hoping for a victory in one of these next three so we can be 2-2 after 4. I'd be happy with that.

The Packers have a tough divisional stretch coming up after the Jets. At Lions, then at Bears, then home against the Vikings. I'm most worried about Detroit. I have been since they hired Jim Caldwell.
