New water-side restaurant 'Spice Road Table' coming to Epcot's Morocco Pavilion?

They are taking away the viewing area so that people will pay extra to see the show at night. Epcot's singular draw for us is the international food that can be so much better than american food. I can eat burgers and dogs anywhere in the country. That is why the Food and Wine festival is our favorite time to go. And where this is going is just like in Mexico, waterside. People love waterside dinning and recreation. I may not agree with the placement or even the building of the new restaurant, but I can understand it.

Need to say again how sick this makes me. These restaurants are running the lovely views around the lagoon and they're cluttering up the walkways.

<sarcasm> You're right, I mean how dare they remove one building to replace it with another that extends away from the walkway and over the water's edge?</sarcasm>

Come on now. They already have the space allocated for the full restaurant site so you can see it isn't that big and doesn't extend past the boat dock already in place. This will have very little impact on the view. If you look at the photos of what's above the scrim, they are decorative to ensure a accurate architecture to maintain the theme and not very big.

Just what the hell is Disney thinking when they decide to make a place more cluttered and less pretty? That those things will pay off well in the long run??????
So, if they stick with the plan they had, open air dining/windows along the water (reference the Mexico addition) so you can dine there and see the view with NO building in front of you, as opposed to previously trying really hard to stare through the previous store's walls, you think this is less pretty and more cluttered? I agree that in Mexico, they should have fixed the narrow walkway problem on the South side during the design of the new building. Instead the opted to leave it, so the new building adds no clutter but simply didn't fix the prior clutter.

Anyway, the dining locations will pay off without question as even in the slow seasons, the dining locations generate a lot of revenue.

I think someone is pocketing a good deal of cash on this.
Sure....share holders. You and everyone else are welcome to log into any brokerage site and buy some Disney shares. No one is preventing you from profiting on the same dining locations Disney is.

I understand and do appreciate your perspective on this. Mine was similar at first. My only thought is as my reply to luv says, there was already a building and band there, so they aren't removing that much space. If the design follows suit, the restaurant will add seating with a view of the show. Many people buy food to eat while watching the show. This will certainly be the case here. So aren't we gaining a place where folks who were eating anyway can sit and see the show potentially freeing up locations in other places?

This site just doesn't seem like a real loss to me, but more of a swap out between the store/band and people eating anyway having a place to congregate.

I reckon it is all point of view. Morocco has always been one of my favorite countries to visit in Epcot. But I feel that Disney is more of the mind of making more money from people that have it, and letting the less wealthy fend for themselves in more crowded spaces. The restaurant will seat less people than standing room and also negate viewing due to the structures size.

Technically, It is not a loss in the long run. I am looking at this both ways. It can be viewed as a relative gain in the foodie department. Epcot is food, at least World Showcase is anyway. Each different place to eat, having its own unique menu, will spread the crowds more. Essentially foodie crowd control, much like having several attractions in just a small areas (think MK here). Crowd distribution and control is always a top priority among the managers and designers of parks.

Look at Food and Wine Festival, it creates traffic by its very nature. The line design is inefficient. There are people there for food, but also the booze. If Disney went the route some other parks have and split the lines as food only and booze only, the lines would move faster and more efficiently. Also having a wrist band for the over 21 crowd would help speed things up since people would not have to keep pulling out their ID when they should have it out already. Efficiency is the key to speed in the service industry.

From the update listed above with photos, they did not extend over the water. But hopefully the main walkway is not impacted too much since that would create one heck of a bottleneck. Again, they extend the closed off areas usually due to the workers needing the space.

I look forward to seeing what this looks like in the end.

Indeed.

Why is that the case, i wonder....?
This has probably be discussed ages ago....but my memory needs to be jogged.

Last time i was inside the Odyssey was in 2007. I marveled at how well preserved it was, as far as Retro EPCOT Center preservation goes. Looked to still have the original brown/orange/yellow pain schemes and even the music was oh-so-70s playing over the PA..!

Awesomeness.
I will admit...the EPCOT geek in me was geeking out inside.

If they ever did re-open it to the public, i would like to hope they would keep the retro ambiance....exspecially since 'retro' is so 'in' now...but i know i am just kidding myself hoping for something like that.

Probably best to keep it closed....and keep it a time capsule.

I like the bathrooms! Their so retro!

Looks good so far.
Looking at the recent photos above i was pleasently surprised to see it does not appear to be as large as i feared it might end up being. If it stays at this height, it will not mess with the sightlines from afar.

Of course it is still being worked on, but i admit after seeing the recent construction images i am a little more hopeful this will blend well with the surroundings and not block too much.

I agree. If it stays at it's current height and the colors don't clash with the pavilion behind it, I'll have no real problem with it.

Was there today and the height doesnt look like it will be all that bad, however, this thing at least contruction wall wise is longgggg, and starts before you even get to the pavilion. Also Morockin has been moved from between France and Morocco to the other side of Morocco right up against the pavilion with BLARING volume. Way too loud for those tight quarters between pavilion and construction walls.

Do we know if the kingdom has sent over any artisans/workers again to assist with this build like they did for the original pavillion?

I am excited about the new restaurant. Epcot is food, if you want rides then head on over to MK. We all know that, especially during free dining, diner options are very limited if you were unable to get an ADR. And the whole small plate thing is really big right now, and in my opinion a good idea. My wish for Epcot is to see more "street" performers around world showcase. While I love the ones they have now, adding more would be great. I miss the living statues in Italy.

Is there still a place to get henna done in Morocco? That was a tradition for my sister and I.
They have 2 spots they do henna, 1 toward the back inside the gift shops, and the one that was by the water they moved her to right by the bathrooms in the sitting area for the quick service. They added a bunch a different henna designs.

I believe there are only two waterside World Showcase restaurants, in Mexico and in UK, and we love both of them in large part because of their locations. As I see it, there are plenty of free places to see the lagoon, and I do not believe that this area was a prime location to watch Illuminations anyway. I also recall waiting well over half an hour to get through the walk up counter service line in Morocco, indicating that the demand for Moroccan food outweighs the supply.

I think it's great. Is it a sign that "free" views of the lagoon and Illuminations are disappearing? Maybe, but very very slowly. Given that it's more than a mile to walk around World Showcase, I can't imagine that the 100 feet or so of restaurant space (that in large part is already obstructed) will make any serious difference. Meanwhile, more fun food will be available in a fun setting, and I can't wait. Maybe they'll even have shwarma.
