New to cruising

5thGen is exactly right. Some people (like me) wear a tux. Some people (like 5thGen) wear a jacket and tie. Others were dockers and a nice shirt. And there always people who ignore Formal Night completely and come to dinner in shorts and t-shirt.

Just keep in mind that DCL's dress code in the rotational restaurants is a suggestion for the evening. I've never seen people turned away, even in shorts. (Palo and Remy are a different story.) So as long as you feel like you look nice enough for dinner, you'll be fine.

I'll just add that if you HATE getting dressed up at all on vacation, but you don't want to feel out of place on Formal Night, you can go up to Cabanas/Topsider and still enjoy a sit-down dinner in informal clothing.

I had the best steak of the cruise when we decided on Topsider's one night. And they had a salad bar with tasty shrimp. :hungry:

I know that Remy is a no jeans resteraunt but do you think I could get away with crisp black jeans, dress shoes, sport shirt and coat? I dress up every day and when I'm on vacay it's hard to bring myself to pack suits for my three nighter. Great tips in this thread guys!

No! We learned firsthand, don't mess with Remy's dress code. I definitely wouldn't try jeans. :)

Uh yeah. Not even nice white strappy sandals with a very expensive dress. :cautious:

Personally, I'm over the thought of Remy. I could easily say it was the sandals thing but I think ultimately it was the restroom escort thing that was the solid "oh hell no" for me. That was seriously creepy. I shouldn't need a team of lookouts and a solid sprint (in uncomfortable shoes, no less) to leave the room for any reason. Been makin' my way to the ladies room and back without issue on my own for about 35 years now. It was just too weird for me in a "why are you watching me" way. :p

Ok, I can't be the only one here who thinks this story needs to be told!!!

In Remy with a group of 6 of the ladies I kept noticing when any female got up to leave she was often escorted out by one of the suited-up fellows onhand and always escorted back to her seat when she returned. Eventually I came to the conclusion they were being escorted out when they'd stand to go to the restroom and escorted in (I'm guessing) by someone waiting by the door for her return. While I could see where this would be part of the crazy service thing that Remy is all about, an un-sophistication-ified girl like me wasn't down with this. At all. I confirmed with my dining companions this is what they were observing as well. This is when I decided I didn't have to go bad enough and that I could hold it. I did, however, mention that should I become uncomfortable I'd be requesting my fellow girls be my lookouts while I dash out the door, uncomfortable shoes in-hand. I wasn't sure what I would've done on the return trip. Maybe whispered I was a big girl and could find my table full of friends without hollering for them across the room like a complete redneck. I dunno. I just decided I was happy to hold it rather than chance the suited stalkers trying to escort me in either direction because that's. just. CREEPY! :cautious::hilarious:

OMG! Kelly, I read a trip report awhile back where someone mentioned this whole escort thing and were totally creeped out by it! That was enough for me to write off Remy.

Seriously. I had my back to the door and dining room the first time I ate at Remy last September. I didn't notice the escorting then. We both sat facing the window. This time I had my back to the window and was faced inwards. I was watching everything in the dining room the entire meal. So much pomp-n-circumstance. My mom calls this sort of thing the "dog-n-pony show". I loved when they'd get a gaggle of servers around then simultaneously place dishes in front of a bunch of us. Every time they did it I did the count: "One, two, three, GO!" Then they'd lift the silver domes off the plates for the surprise presentation thing and I'd say, "Surprise!" I think I'm just not the right person for all this. I find it funny and/or creepy on multiple levels. ;)

Confession. For our 10th anniversary trip to WDW we had booked Victoria & Albert's (the Queen Victoria's Room no less). Just could not go through with it. Totally not either one of our style's. Poor Russ when he called to make the reservation asked what was the absolute best dinner he could book and that was it. He was so excited with all these little surprises for me (upgraded us to Honeymoon Suite at WL, Wishes Cruise from WL with a bottle of Dom Perignon delivered to it, Carriage Ride at POR...I mean everything), but the V&A thing...once I explained to him what it was, he knew that was beyond our comfort level and bagged it!

Yep. And after the refresher at Remy on the Dream cruise I was sure to bag it for our 20th anniversary on the Fantasy the following week. Tracey was so thrilled! LOL!

Ya'll are cracking me up!

They just escort you to make you feel special! He didn't wait outside the room for me. He dropped me off and went back into the restaurant. When I came back into the restaurant someone saw me and ran to escort me.

You should enjoy the attention, ladies! It's very gentlemanly! :)

I was told "book Remy if you really want." Um, no thanks! Palo is about my limit!

I totally understand that Remy and Victoria and Albert's aren't everyone's thing.

Here's my honest review, for what it's worth. I'm a (very) picky eater and was way more worried about what I would eat then the experience. It's Disney after all. I'm quite sure they've seen guests from every background. I do go to a lot of formal dinners, but I worry a lot more about what I might do wrong at a military dinner than I ever did at Remy. I never felt embarrassed or overwhelmed at Remy at all. I didn't ever feel like the servers talked down to us or were laughing at us in any way when we asked questions. I was blown away by the service inside the restaurant.

We had a bad experience (outside the restaurant) before going in which colored our experience somewhat. Someone messed up to be sure. But putting that aside, I loved the rest of it. :)

I certainly wouldn't feel looked down on. The whole experience though would just be something I wouldn't be comfortable with. I'm not one that likes to be waited on (and in fact we (half) joked on our last cruise that they should have a night where the guests serve dinner to the dining staff! I think that would be totally fun!

Ive never understood how waiters and sales people can be looking down on their patrons. Personally, I don't care if the wait staff think I'm uncultured or don't know fine dining. Mostly it's because I AM uncultured and don't know fine dining. :) However, I do like to try new things, and this sounds of interest to my wife and I. I'm going to play it cool and relaxed, I'm on vacation after all. And if all else fails, I'll most likely never see these people again.
