Don't know if this has made the news in Orlando, but a new Florida theme park has just been approved for Miami that could become competition for WDW!

It's a mall with some extras on the inside. Not exactly a theme park....
We're getting All Aboard Florida, which is a fast conventional train to Orlando, and multi-billion dollar mega developments for downtown that will transform the look of the city to something right out of science fiction! Miami is gonna be hot in the near future!
Irrelevant. People aren't going to fly/drive into Orkando then hop on a train to Miami for a glorified mall....

It's being built by the same company that owns the largest mall, which is in Canada. That mall has a water park and other attractions. This mall looks like it will play up the the theme park aspect of it even more. It's competition no matter how you slice it. This may be the reason why some families decide to spend an extra day in Miami versus Orlando when they plan their Florida vacation!
Nobody plans a "Florida vacation." They plan an ORLANDO vacation or a DISNEY vacation. Exactly zero people will reschedule zero days from Orlando to Miami as a result of this project.

All aboard Florida will make it just three hours.
Three hours ON the train. Plus 45 minutes to get to the departure train station in the first place, 15 minutes to park, another 30 minutes to get from the arrival train station to your final destination and just like that the idiot train actually takes LONGER than driving.

Americans hate trains, that's just the way it is. Why? Americans hate strangers and love flexibility, especially on vacation.

All Aboard Florida is a stupid idea and even if it does start up will not make enough money to last. I know most communities along the route are not happy about trains going 100+ mph 30 times a day through their towns. Lawsuits are coming from Martin and Indian river counties and I am sure more counties will join. If they are going to do this it should use tracks west of 95 where its more rural.

Am I right in All Aboard Floridas publicity saying it opened last year?

Reminds me of the MagLev adverts. Coming in 1997.

All Aboard Florida is far from certain at this point. At the very least, don't hold your breath.

Americans hate trains, that's just the way it is.

Is that why so many intercity trains run sold-out (or nearly so) day after day, week after week?

Where in the world did you ever get the idea Americans dislike trains, anyway?

First off, a lot of people plan "Florida Vacations" that include a stop at one of the Orlando Theme Park Resorts and also include cruises, beach stays, even trips to Miami and the Keys.

And I think this WILL affect some of the FL Weekend get-away croud. Especially with how things are turning out for locals and the whole FP+ thing. The reporter I was with this morning was banging his head on his laptop because he was trying to get 3 (for him and 2 friends that are going with him, all AP holders) FP+s for 7DMT for May 18th and they weren't available. So he got 1, and is trying to add his friends as they become available.…...or not.

Not to mention that Miami is, in and of itself, a world class tourist destination.

But mostly, I think this will help WDW more than hurt it. I don't see anyone interested in going to WDW choosing this instead. But I do see some people adding a trip to Miami to their "FL Vacation" with this being included as part of the plan. Particularly the foreign visitors, where it's not uncommon for them to stay for 14 days at a time and shop like crazy.

More like a small novelty for families that go to Miami and realize it's mostly drinking, partying, and drugs. Not very family friendly. So let's go to the mall.

This is the first step, they would dearly love to hang a mega casino on this mall but so far the Seminoles and dog tracks have been able to block the gambling part. Oh - yeah TWDC has some pull as well but that is the real goal. 12.9 million for 82 acres of Miami would be enough to do the deal even if nothing gets built.

The title of this thread is very misleading and it really does not belong on a WDW board IMHO

So Miami gets a little bit of Dubai? 25K security jobs? Wow. Can't imagine how this is viewed by anyone as competition for WDW. Tampa, Keys, other Florida cities, maybe, but not Orlando.
