News New Theater to be built at the Magic Kingdom - now cancelled?

I feel like it's pretty rare of them to "take back" an announcement by announcing they have cancelled something. I'm sure it's happened it just doesn't feel like the norm, so they may not ever say anything officially. Or they could drop a line in during a blog post on something new announced for the MK.

I do not think they will even drop a line. Did they ever announce they were NOT going to build Russia? Nope. But they did announce they were not going to build Hyperion Wharf... kind of. Anyway, I think with the rumors of the Beauty and Beast being replaced, I am guessing, STRICTLY GUESSING (maybe even hoping???) they decided why recreate two shows, and a second theater, when they can replace one show and upgrade and existing venue.

I know there's no correlation of any sort to this, but I could see any official news, or lack of, for this cancellation being similar to when the Rocket Rods at DL went down for a refurb and then were never re-opened. No real or official announcement ever did happen with that attraction. I wouldn't be surprised if it's another 3-6 months before any official announcement or confirmation is given by Disney, if ever at all for this project's supposed demise. Might just eventually get reported by the press or by insiders with no actual announcement by Disney themselves ever given.

There were about five or six projects, some of them being major that were broadcasted on live TV for Disneyland and Walt Disney World during the 25th Anniversary of Disneyland hosted by Harry Anderson that never happened and were very hyped. Some based on popular Culture that was proven a hit and some that were hoping to be. One of those was Alien Encounter for Disneyland that of course ended up at Walt Disney world much later.

They could also go the route they did with the Seven Dwarfs Mine Ride announcement...

"As with any project of this scale, we’ve also continued to look for additional ways to surprise and delight our guests and I think you’ll be pleased. One opportunity we’re especially excited about is the chance to tell Snow White’s story in a fresh new way. The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train will take you on a rollicking, musical ride into the mine “where a million diamonds shine.” The coaster will feature a first-of-its kind ride system with a train of ride vehicles that swing back and forth as they whisk along the track. The journey will be accompanied by music from the classic Disney film and animated figures of Snow White and the Dwarfs.

Our other Disney princesses will also be getting a new home (actually, they prefer to call it a castle) in the all new Princess Fairytale Hall. Aurora, Cinderella and other Disney princesses, such as Tiana and Rapunzel, will greet you in an elegant royal court at the location where Snow White’s Scary Adventures is today. This new experience will be in place of some of the earlier plans we shared regarding opportunities to interact with your favorite princesses."

"The Walt Disney Company is proud to announce the continued use of backstage parking for the convenience of our workers making deliveries to the Main Street and Tomorrowland areas of Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. This functional loading and unloading area will continue to be at the location where the New Magic Kingdom Main Street theater was planned to open!"

I taped that on tv back then! I was so looking forward to Dick Tracy's Crimestoppers, Alien Encounter and Uncle Plektu's Galactic Review! The Baby Herman ride basically evolved into the Car Toon Spin I think.

I watched it recently on Youtube and it's pretty funny to hear Silvestri's BTTF music on a Disney program. That would never happen now. lol

On a time traveling train clip no less. But they have done similar moves recently. Just less than six years ago for the 50th timeframe they were using the theme from Universal's Peter Pan movie. (of course not as iconic as Back to the Future's score)

True, they usually cancel plans quietly and pretend the announcements weren’t made. :D

It seems the park planers don’t have any idea what is needed in MK. The theatre would have seated 2000 people and Imagine a show ever 90 mins. This would have helped so much with the crowds and lines. MK could actually have two high quality shows the one on main street and I would have placed another one in either Fantasy Land or Frontier Land having the shows staggered every 45 mins. This would have made quality of life for customers so much better.

I feel like accountants are making these decisions and not people who know what would actually help.

You are right but also specifically to your accountant point,
2,000 people for 90 mins in an indoor theme park theater not spending money is what many bean counters would see. Just like Fastpass was never created for the benefit of the consumer's ride count but primarily for those people who would otherwise be in a queue to be able to spend money as they walk by/through kiosks shops and restaurants.

Then maybe they should focus on building rides with decent capacities so we don't spend 3h in line not spending money

Also true, but 2,000 people for 90 minutes, presuming that was a plan at any time, is just as much a part of that problem(and you know that theater for that sort of show if it was to come into be that way would be an upcharge not a daily multiple performance as 2,000 for an hour and a half plus is horrible for any attraction) Very evident in a world where Flight of Passage and Navi River Journey have such insane near 3 hour waits. Ever since Toy Story Mania they have seemingly completely given up on that efficiency factor while taking out great people eater designs.

2000 people every 90 min isn't that much and wouldn't do that much for crowd levels. That equates to about 1300/hr, and it wouldn't fill the whole 90 minutes (performers need time to regroup, break, etc., logistics of loading/unloading). I don't think the theater was the answer to the crowd problems. Would be much better to build a solid D-ticket ride (very popular, but not something that would serve as a specific draw to the park) that could serve 2000+ guests per hour. That would go a long way to helping park capacity.
