That concept art is strrraaannnge. I still don't have any concept of what I'm looking at and I do this for a living.

Glowing butterflies in the Tree of Life - cool. I can get behind that.
Asian hat dude playing an American acoustic guitar - what?
Tapestry of Nations style puppet walkers - ok.
A glowing bandstand - ok?
Phosfloursecent face paints on kids - could be neat.
Not much else there...

Not sure about the rest, but I read somewhere that Eddie Van Halen is half Indonesian. The Asian hat dude with an American guitar could be a hint that they will have a Van Halen cover band playing the night party.:)

Think TDO would balk at the cost of night vision goggles for all guests? Nah.

No, but perhaps one or two screens per vehicle with a wide-angle camera on top could do the trick.
Camera could be either controlled by the driver (possibly unsafe) or programmed to aim itself at certain spots as the vehicle rolled through the savannah.

Here's my simple plan to buff up DAK in the ensuring years. I think it is actually theoretically realistic, even though it is far more than I expect to happen. TDO, if you reading, you have my permission to take these ideas....

1. Build Pandora as planned. Target date: 2017
2. Add night time show and night safari. Target date: summer 2015.
3. Get a new day time parade to replace the apparently soon to be ending MJJ parade. Target date: ideally, Summer 2013 to correspond to the opening of the new FOLK, but simply ASAP
4. Add a double deck carousel on Discovery Island (like the one in TDS) with the ground level being land animals and the upper level being flying animals. This is a variation on a once proposed triple level carousel for DAK. Target date: summer 2015
5. Add a small land on the west side of the park (across the current backstage bridge and between the new FOTLK theater and Pandora) called "Critter Country". Themed to North American/European temperate forests. Target date: summer 2015. Attractions include:
(a) Relocating the old Pocohontas theater and revising that show
(b) A new Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.
(c) a dark ride themed to the story of Bambi
(d) a M&G for animal characters (I'm picturing Chip and Dale being the hosts, but whatever, lot's of options)
I would build this Critter Country with some space reserved for future expansion, but I want to see it open with some smaller/cheaper/quick to build stuff for capacity. I would think you could also include some sort of food service there (a quick serve).

So, #4 and #5 are the key things that I'm suggesting. You'll notice that I have them timed to open in the same timeframe as the night stuff. This helps to justify the longer hours and spread out the crowds. These rides I'm suggesting are simple and affordable and can be built quickly, but they help to enhance the theme of DAK. The carousel should be easy enough, use the same template as the one from Tokyo, but use different animals. The theater from Pocahontas still exists (I believe) so it's just a matter of reusing what you can and moving it. Would not be complicated.

I've suggested simple Fantasyland style dark rides to round this off because they are easy to build and they would add family friendly fare to the park. Bambi is a franchise that deserves to be represented in WDW somewhere and DAK is the obvious fit. But the key is Mr. Toad -- I know people say built a version with LPS and all, which would be great, but I think simply revisiting the old WDW version of the ride with or without some modifications would work well and be easy. Rebuilding the fan favorite would give TDO something to sell to the public, harking to nostalgia, without it having to be a big E-ticket. Having Bambi and Mr Toad in a connecting building would be a pretty small footprint and save on construction costs by unifying the utilities.

Now, the key is to open these things simultaneous with the night time show. The show will be the big deal, the "E-ticket" of the expansion; the other attractions will simply be the supporting additions. This way, when they expand hours into the evening, there are at least a greater number of attractions that will justify it and bring in people to stay for longer hours (and buy merch and food). This helps to "tie people over" until 2017 when Pandora opens and really fills out the park.

And David Lee Roth could sing "I Wan'na Be Like You" because I want 'Jungle Book' (my fave movie) stuff in the park.

(That actually isn't a huge stretch because David Lee Roth covered 'Just a Gigolo' by Louis Prima, and Prima sang 'I Wan'na Be Like You' for the movie. Whoa, it's all connected. OMG, that's like the 'circle of life' or something:))

1, 2 and 3 should all happen. 4 makes a lot of sense and would be relatively cheap. 5 sounds good but I'm not sure they would spring for 2 dark rides. One new dark ride along with a meet and greet area and maybe a walk through animal exhibit could maybe happen. They should really look to incorporate animals into another ride. I know that the penguins at Sea World was a bit of a flop, but the concept of a dark ride that you exit to an animal exhibit is a solid one. I know it would buck the recent trend, but it would also be great if it wasn't based on a movie. Maybe an Australian area with a dark ride that dumps you off into a walking exhibit featuring kangaroos and koala bears plus maybe a show or upclose exhibits that feature experts handling some snakes, crocs and other dangerous animals. Throw in a spinner and/or a kids play area and a beer stand that sells Fosters and you are done. I would locate the area behind Asia and expand the planet watch train which would stop in Australia now too.

I think long term that an Australia or South America area in the undeveloped space between Asia and Rafiki/Africa would be a good goal. However, something like that, which would incorperate live animals, would be a much slower to build develoment. I was looking for attractions and space that could help with capacity isues ASAP so the park can be made into an effective "full day park" along with the new night time show and night safari.

I love the fact that AK is getting some love but I agree that it needs more dining options and attractions to make it a full day park, even with the avatar and other plans in place. You can what you will about how it was designed as a different kind of experience and that the animals and the trails are the focus but I don't buy it, sorry. And I don't think the majority of people "get it". When you compare it to MK, HS, and even EPCOT (which is a different twist on a theme park too), it comes up short. I'm not suggesting steel coasters and bulldozing the trails for a M&G but a few more rides would really add to the park. So many of the Disney films deal with animals so it should not be too difficult of a tie-in. Or, give us non-film rides. Some dark rides. Mystic Manor with a larger animal theme. More mythical animals. Bring out some obscure but popular animals characters to roam the park (Abu, Raja, Aristocats, Robin Hood character-yes please!, Mr. Toad, Ducktales, etc). Ohhhhhh, a DuckTales ride!!!!!!!! Oh, I just got so excited!

As far as a Critter Country type concept for Animal Kingdom goes, I had this notion of Camp Minnie Mickey essentially becoming Brownstone Park from the Humphrey cartoons as the basic setting (and thus a street show based on that litter cleaning song could probably occur) and featuring some live North American animals on another animal trail, a flume ride featuring Bigfoot and the Fearsome Critters of lumberjack folklore for another mythical animal attraction, and it probably could include a Bambi dark ride as well. It's mostly my annoyance with what happened to Disneyland's Critter Country and the clash between Pooh and Splash Mountain that makes me prefer keeping Europe and America separated rather then mashing them up in the name of bringing back Toad.

I think ducktales would fit more in the hollywood studios, a la indy type (like the ducktales movie)

MY dvc home resort is animal kingdom lodge. I suspect that they will use the same lighting at the nighttime safari as they do at the lodge. you can still see the animals but its not too bright.

When they ran the night safari back in 1999 they used truck mounted spot lights. There were two crew members on each truck, one driving, one directing the spotlights. Will be interesting to see how it is done this time.
