Rumor New nighttime show at Epcot

There's your mistake. Disney no longer purports to E.P.C.O.T.

So as far as they are concerned... More timeless, more relevant, more family, more Disney.

Parks Chairman Bob Chapek said this WORD FOR WORD at Destination D in regards to the Epcot overhaul, “it will be even more relevant than it is today. ... And, at the same time, it will stay true to our original vision.

The plaque when you enter Epcot is what Disney is still purporting to live up to.

Hopefully the show will still be enjoyable, as I don't want Disney and the creators of the show to spend money, and time and effort and have it fall flat. Most of the reported new nighttime shows to me seem very similar to Fantasmic, and less like Wishes and Illuminations, specifically Illuminations though. That being said, I quite liked Fantasmic, as when it was created it was something different and unique. Now though, it's been made fairly routine in Disney, especially since Disney has massively turned towards projection technology. I think in moderation, some of that stuff can be quite cool and interesting, but seeing endless cartoons on the sides of buildings does start to lose interest over time for me. Once I know that they actually can project images on the sides of buildings, it doesn't really matter anymore what the images are of. The impressive part is that they can actually do that. Every once and a while there is a creative one, but for the most part it's just like a movie projector at your local cinema and the screen. The screen however is the castle or Tower of Terror. or in Fantasmic, it's water. The "wow" factor, which should always be present in these nighttime shows, quickly fades after the first moments of seeing the images on the facades of the buildings. I will admit, Disney is very skilled and creative in how they do it, and the level at which they have gotten already in such a short time of doing it is impressive.

One of the shows I have some interest in, is the Hollywood Studios History of Animation show. That could be good, though once again, it could be a lot like the others. One thing I find odd about it, like I stated earlier with Frozen and Epcot, is Hollywood Studios is going to be ground zero for Star Wars in the theme parks. Star Wars is going to be the #1 draw of the park, and have a large footprint inside it. However, based on the very definition of what this new show is, I don't know if they've announced if it's replacing Fantasmic, or will be shown at the Chinese Theater, is that Star Wars will not be in it. Star Wars is not a part of Disney animation. Star Wars could have some cool nighttime shows and displays, as we've already seen some, and maybe some of those will continue, but to have a nighttime show in a park that is going to skew largely towards Star Wars, and ignore it in the nighttime show to me is a bit odd, and short sighted in terms of planning.

Either way though, I do hope for the best. Ultimately we haven't seen the finished product, or how audiences respond. A huge advantage Disney has over the general public is that a lot of people have no idea what they miss out on. They only know what they've seen, and if a family is visiting Disney World for the first time next week, they'll see Happily Ever After and fall in love with it. They won't even be able to compare Wishes to it, because they don't even know what that was. For people who do know however, it's always a struggle of what have we gained, versus what have we lost. Sometimes the loss is greater then the gain, but the general audience doesn't even know they lost anything in the first place, so they are very happy with the gains.

I'm so baffled by this show. Let's spend the culminating event in a park about cultural diversity and progress celebrating how Disney music sounds the same everywhere. Like... I get that IP was coming... but the theme of this show just seems... tortured. ALL music sounds the same when played elsewhere. Worse, Disney music which is heavy brass band and symphonics is almost immediately recognizable as american influenced. Sure it has riffs of various sounds unique to asia, middle east, etc. but it always comes back to that Disney sound that Alan Menken made iconic. IE this isn't really that diverse and almost the worst kind of cultural appropriation and exploitation that diversity experts warn about.

Also:
"We heard you like HEA, so we put HEA in every park! but made it really weird and missed that the reason people liked it isn't the characters but the message"

Go back to the drawing board! We're willing to work with ya, but this just isn't it.

No amount of ‘cutting-edge’ technology can make up for uncreative and recycled storytelling.*
*Please see George Lucas and prequels for further evidence.

But I'm not convinced that one needs a beautiful, fully developed, beginning-middle-end story for an appealing nighttime show. Anyone I've asked couldn't tell you what the "story" of Illuminations is if their lives depended on it. They know that some sort of "story" attempt is probably being made, but it escapes them. Not sure why that's any better. What is the "story" of HEA, exactly? I'm sure per these boards we're supposed to hate it because it's new. We actually really like it. A theme of some sort, sure. But story? Not sure that's what most people care about wrt one of these shows. I'll save some the trouble: I obviously just don't get it.

ETA: We'd actually prefer the Epcot show NOT be stuffed full of IP. My 13 yo son was lamenting this change just yesterday. I'm just not sure that a "story" in the traditional sense is necessary for a successful show like this.

My actual reaction to this is not suitable for a family-friendly forum. Epcot Forever is so disingenuous and I'm going to have to think long and hard about supporting something that, while I'm sure I'll love, might as well be a giant middle finger to the park we used to know. I'm trying not to judge Happily Ever After 2 until we get more information but it quite legitimately sounds like all of our worst fears down to the letter.

I'm not shocked that people love HEA. I thik DL's RDCT has a fan base as well, but instead of a HEA in every park, Maybe Disney should go the RDCT route, it would be park centerd and different in each park.
Unless they can put RDCT's story into HEA for the 50th and the full replacement or Epcot Forever for the 40th

I'm not shocked either, I love HEA. In the park that it belongs.

That statement alone, packed with buzz words and synergistic BS qualifies Chapek as a total moron.

A video preview of the 2020 show

I like how in the first couple seconds the torches are still there.

The tech looks neat but I can't find any craps to give about the show. If that's the real soundtrack then 10 seconds of RoEs music from any point in the show has it beat, personally. I prefer originality then hearing a movie soundtrack (or variation of it) any day of the week.

The projections do look cool. But does that mean it will no longer be the case that you can get a good/great view from anywhere around the lagoon?
Apologies for the bad quality of my sketch - I made it on my phone in the queue for philharmagic.

The big projection fins I expect to be laid out like this, so anyone, anywhere can see at least two. Right in the center should be the spinning LED disc screen

I don’t understand what WDI is thinking; this looks like it’s been spun through a marketing machine with “old fart Exec ideas” tossed into the mix.

I really like HEA but think the songs could’ve been better selected and edited. I love Illuminations: ROE but concede the spinning earth barge segment lasts too long. I enjoy Fantasmic in Florida and California. World of Color is a “Greatest Hits” clip show but doesn’t clash in a park that doesn’t have an ID anyway.

Regardless of the tech used, this new Epcot show looks like a boring, unimaginative use of Disney clips.

But that’s not the worst part.

In a park which has spent over three decades celebrating traditional cultures, Disney is hosting a show that pretends its animated movies are just as relevant and significant as civilizations and cultural contributions that developed over hundreds of years. The multicultural musical celebrations of the first two Illuminations — and the sweeping story of humanity in ROE — are replaced with Disney’s Greatest (and Not-So-Greatest) Karaoke.

The corporate cynicism is astounding. This show is talking down to the public. If this were in the Magic Kingdom or the Studios, it would be great; but by placing it in World Showcase at Epcot, Disney is quietly stating the public is too stupid to appreciate anything other than its own animated movies.
