New Movie for Norway?

It is certainly an interesting article, and the Norway movie is embarrassing for both the Norwegian government and especially Disney brass.

How you could let a movie go that long without an update is unbelievable. It was not a bad representation in its time, but is so outdated as to be ridiculous looking.

Hopefully they can come to an arrangement on joint financing. Disney REALLY needs to get the idea that the age of sponsored attraction updates is really over in this corporate environment. Whole pavillions should not be allowed to close and attractions get this outdated because they have no sponsor.

Isn't the french movie even older? Or did they update it already?
I will always be very disappointed that they never equipped our pavillon (Germany) with the planned boat ride (River Rhine Cruise) or at least something different however I am glad that they didn't produce another lame movie showing West-Germany in the early 80ies.

I'm of mixed emotions on this one. On one side, I think the corporate requirements have curtailed development in the World Showcase, as evidenced by the Norway film. On the flip side though, since the movie is essentially a free promo film for the nation (Norway or otherwise), perhaps looking to some entity for backing isn't unreasonable.

"Disney, however, has reportedly insisted once again that since the film is essentially an advertisement for Norway, the country should foot the bill for an updated film."

Disney took it over! So if it is dated (which it obviously is) who is to blame? Yes, the film is an advertisement. As is the country itself and every other country in EPCOT.

I can actually sort of see Disney's point on this one. Ideally, they'd be keeping everything fresh. But there are other things they can spend their money on that will have more impact on the guest experience (and Disney's bottom line) than a film advertising Norway as a great place to travel.

By not updating it, they can basically hold Norway hostage until they break down and agree to at least foot some of the bill. If they don't care to do so, so be it. Disney can afford to wait.

Again, I'd like to see Disney hold itself to a higher standard and keep everything fresh. But we all know that's not how Disney operates these days. So with that in mind, I don't object so much to Disney playing hardball and waiting for Norway to pick up at least some of the cost.

Exactly my opinion. WS is on a halt for more than 2 decades next year so something about the corporate requirement IS a problem. But I understand that Disney want's Norway to pay for it's own tourist advertising.
The Norwegian pavillon skyrocketed the number of US-tourists to that country in the years after the opening.

Did I see some number in there that 20 million is what they are pricing a new film out to be?

Disney / Norway should just have some sort of contest with independant filmmakers in Norway. Give them specific requirements like:
  • type of film (digital)
  • Length requirements
  • subject matter (attract tourism in Norway in a wholesome, clean manner)
  • things to be omitted for legal reasons (product placement, etc)

and let other people do the work. Word the contract so that it that if no acceptable entries are received, they do not "have" to choose a winner. Make the contract give Disney rights to the film for a specific set of time 5-7 years, and then run the contest again.

I would have to think that some filmmakers would like to give it a go, have their work be seen by massive numbers of people, and try and give their country some exposure.

want Norway to foot the bill? Threaten to demolish the entire Norway Pavilion in favor of a country that is willing to pay for the entire demolition and construction of a new pavilion. I'm sure Brazil, with its upcoming Olympic games, is willing to pay for some advertising in America - they'd love any sort of international attention that will increase tourism.

Disney and Norway had a pretty ugly fall out back in 2002, one that did not end leaving Norway happy. The article was spot on. And since that happened the pavilion has been left to drag on with as little done as possible. But the ride needs work, the film needs replacing, they need to bring back a performing group (like Norwegian folk music, not princesses whom have nothing to do with Norway twirling around in what use to be a nice restaurant). Its great when there is corporate support but then if theres not Disney should be ready to step up to the plate, in this case however they refuse to and they should have thought about that before being not so nice if you will, to the Norwegian sponsors. Im sure WDI wants to do something here, but TDO (as usual) refuses unless someone else picks up the majority of costs.

Personally its still my favorite pavilion, one of the grandest there, but it needs some restoration.

It certainly is outdated, but would an update make any difference? People will maybe watch it once, at least those who knew it was updated, then they will be onto skipping over it again. The real problem is the movie was intended to be the pre-show and not the post-show - putting guests into a movie after a ride just doesn't work.

Impressions de France looks worse dating-wise. Both could easily and relatively cheaply take the Reflections of China route; reshoot the most dated shots, swap out the old ones for the new ones, give the transfer a spit n polish as well as the audio and voila!

All they need to do is replace the worn carpet between the entrance and exit doors from all the people walking straight through.

So why didn't this happen?

A while ago there was someone who posted blueprints of a variety of attractions (or at least had a website that was linked to on here). I believe there was one for the layout of the Norway pavilion. I can't find the link but Steve's idea of having the movie part of the pre-show is not a bad idea at all. If you can have the queue winding through that room the video can be on a loop before the ride.

There was also a rumor a little while ago regarding upgrades to the ride itself. Is that still in the cards?

I'm thinking that its 20 million kroner which would be about 3.7 million dollars. 20 million dollars just wouldn't make sense for a short video like this. I'm not even sure I'd expect 3.7 million dollars for it either. Really, how hard can it be to shoot a 5 minute video?

Perhaps Disney should just team up with the travel channel on these things? Disney throws in a few dollars and gets a short film, the Travel Channel throws in more and adds the production staff and gets an hour or two special. The host country can help with access, logistics, etc...

At least it has the best attraction in WS. Ok that doesn't say too much but maelstrom is a small gem. Of course WS never had the big e-tickets that were planned like the Mt. Fuji rollercoaster.
