New Film for Soarin' and Potential 3rd Theater

Interesting. They did the one at DCA during WoC, no? I kind of assumed they do an Epcot one during Illuminations.

They did the one at DCA multiple times overnight, from roughly 2AM to 6AM.

The Disneyland Resort parks were totally empty and the bloggers that showed up to document the flights reported that WDI had lots of additional lighting set up on major icons like Cadillac Range mountains in Cars Land, Carthay Circle Theater tower, Grizzly Peak, Space Mountain, Matterhorn Mountain, Sleeping Beauty Castle and its' a small world façade. They also had the World of Color fountains operating, but in their mellow post-show format that just has some of the fountains flowing low with rainbow colored lights beneath them, which they do nightly as each show exits the area to the theme song.

This is the World of Color/Paradise Pier post-show look they likely caught for the WDI camera...

If they are doing the Epcot flyover in the "early morning", that would mean 2AM to 6AM to me. Nighttime. Totally dark. But probably with WDI setting up accent lighting on key Epcot icons, like they did with DCA and Disneyland. But DCA and Disneyland are literally 75 yards away from each other, so they can catch both park flyovers within a 20 second shot. If they go with the same concept for the new WDW version, that means the flight ends at Epcot and only Epcot.

They could always update one theater at a time to avoid having to close the attraction completely for a long period of time. (if they had three theaters that too would help.)

I wouldn't quite say that...we still have a lot that needs to be addressed and we haven't even begun to discuss what having one of the major two E-tickets at Epcot down for 4-6 months.

It's certainly good news though. Very good news.

Yeah, I am wondering if it would be possible to build the third theater first (with digital projection and whatever is needed for the new movie), have it basically done and then shut the ride down for a short period (maybe a week or two) to just "connect" the new theater to the existing hallway. Then open up the ride with only the one theater (yes, I know, terrible lines) while shutting down the other two theaters to update them.

Probably not plausible.

Idk if spiderman is an accurate comparison, they kept the same exact scenes and didn’t have to reprogram the ride vehicles. Just new projectors i believe.

Partially true. The action on the screen is the same, however the timing is different. Spider-man did receive a new ride profile during the upgrade.

I was thinking along the same lines. Start building the 3rd theater. Then when ready to start ride installation, shut down one of the other theaters and do the upgrade to it at the same time as the install on the new. Then when both are done open together with the new show. Then shutdown and upgrade the final theater. This would give them two theaters to open the new show in since we know the lines will be crazy for it. A few months later the the last theater will come online and help with wait times.

This is only helpful though if they need something to take up capacity during that time. Most likely they'll just shutdown Soarin completely and reopen when all are done.

According to Lucasfilm the original doesn't exist. The restored negatives are of the special edition.

If you believe that sort of thing.
when they released the special edition, i remember in the extras them talking about now or never, showing how badly the original prints had deteriorated, and the restoration it took to make it screen quality again. i would expect that the original prints are probably too far gone now...

If they close down the attraction completely it will severely strain the few rides that will be open at Epcot due to MM+. Im not MM+ but now more people are making FP selections because of it, compared to a year ago. TT and Maelstrom FP+ will be gone before you can blink your eyes and they will be a nightmare of a wait time. People will probly opt to take Illuminations viewing over Nemo, Caballeros or Ellen as well. Whats left to even it out? M&G's? It will be interesting to see how Disney handles it.

Regarding the prospect of Soarin' downtime...

I usually get to the parks at rope drop, but if Soarin' weren't open, I have no idea what I'd even go to first in EPCOT. Test Track I guess (me and everyone else) but...meh. Spaceship Earth maybe? Living with the Land???? There's not a lot of compelling stuff in Future World any more. I guess this would be a good opportunity to sleep in for once.

Actually, the more I think about it, I'd rather them spend the money earmarked for a third Soarin' theater on an Imagination upgrade. Or just something new.
