as cool as all this is gonna be and I for one am very anxious to get on here, a big piece of me says a lagoon should still be there along with 20000 leagues :-( I never got to see it, but I've done a lot of research on it and boy do I wish it was still there. Something just doesn't seem right not having it anymore. It SO could've been repurposed, specially that show building. IT WAS HUGE!! oh well, I know the next part of Fantasyland will be awesome anyways! :)

That building was in such a state of disrepair that it would've been too costly to repurpose.

Well they did retain some of the side walls to save on construction costs for Mermaid permit wise, so in a way, I guess you could say a piece of 20K exists.
But yeah like raven said the building was not savable.

Don't even get me started. I'll never forget talking it up to my friend and then getting there and it was closed - with a big King Triton statue in the middle of the water. It was like getting kicked in the gut. The best part of the ride was when I was old enough to look up out the little port hole window and realized we were mere inches below the water...I remember thinking I had figured out the secret!!

Still trying to pin down exactly what's up with the tents.
Best I can say right now is that they will be seeing substantial renovations.
Looking for better info...

Thanks for the info! Curious minds...

That was my response in one of the other threads also. Apparently reports of the tents' demise were premature and their deterioration exagggerated (??)

Regardless, it seems everyone is upbeat that this will all look good and the whole thing will be much different in the end. Still seems like slapping lipstick on a pig to me but I am trying to be open minded too.

I'm actually ok with the information I've heard and seen thus far. I was just surprised about the tents b/c I heard such horrible reports about them.

I can tell you from site surveys, parts of the tents are dry rotted. Don't stand in certain places when it's raining outside. I think the idea is to see what can be salvaged.

So, the water comes in? That's crazy! I was sizing up the tents just a couple of weeks ago actually and I must admit they don't look very good!

If they salvage some of it and make it look good... well, more power to them!

some of you might find this website interesting. it's all about the demise and demolition of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, lots of photos by an undercover Disney Cast Member.

i never got to go on it, but it looks like it would have been awesome.

Great site and pictures!!! Whats wild is by the time Mermaid opens, it will be almost (not quite) but will have taken almost 20 years for them to open something in that same spot. And no the original pooh playground doesnt count.

Wow. That's really pathetic when you think about it. 20 years. Just...wow.

Already?! I didn't think they were THAT far on the buliding yet... but great if its true!

Yeah a couple days ago it sure didnt look like they would be that far yet, I dont really see how. Just open steel walls rising, but you could see the show buildings box shape, taking shape, def not a tiny building.

So the castle is a "facade"? Doesn't that mean some drawing on a cardboard cutout or is this something that they are actually building ala Hogwarts castle in Universal?

The main part of the castle will be a forced-perspective set piece on top of the themed restaurant complex.
I think what people are calling a "facade" is just the framework for the building.
