I wish this meant the end, but I doubt It. Look at the profile picture- SSE still has the wand on it and DHS isn't even represented in it.

So I have one question...

Is this FB page an officially-Disney-endorsed page? Are there links to it from a verifiable Disney page? Just because someone creates a FB page (only about three weeks ago, from what it looks like) and names it as the "official page for WDW Passholders" doesn't mean it's actually run *by* Disney. (Search for a famous actor and see how many profiles and fan pages pop up for them)

I'll do a little poking around.

Edit: Hmmm, I do see that there's a link from what I presume to be the official WDW page on Facebook (the one with 11 million Likes) to the new Passholder page, along with another copy of this park icons pic...

I think the reason the Chinese theater never was the icon was because of legal reasons. As for ToT as the icon... wouldn't it be the same? The attraction is centered around the Twilight Zone franchise correct? So wouldn't that be a legal battle to make happen unless Disney does actually have the rights to Twilight Zone??

Disney does have an agreement in place with CBS (current Twilight Zone rights holder), as well as I believe the Sterling estate that lets them use the marks and likenesses. However, the Hotel and name of the Hotel I believe were original Disney creations, and thus not tied to any actual Twilight Zone intellectual property. They could have just as easily made it the Mickeys Wicked Spooky Tower of Terror, but that doesn't have the same cache about it.

I've heard that they're taking away the hat and the icon would be Carthay Circle Theater like in DCA (Totally revamping DHS to look like DCA?). I forgot the forum where it was posted on.

And they use it as the park icon. Somebody else said TOT shouldn't be the icon either because it's in three other parks.
I don't understand that logic. Why can't it be the water tower? Why can't it be Tower of Terror? After all, there are 5 castles as park icons.

Once again: there is no truth to the Hat covering the theater for legal reasons. Myth myth myth!

It's more than just the fact that it's in 3 other parks (though I think that is a valid reason as well).

I just don't think a thrill ride and a "scary, dilapidated, shuttered" hotel tower makes for a good icon for a Disney theme park. An icon should be more grandiose and representative of the theme behind the park. And while it might fit the "Hollywood that Never Was" tagline...I'm not sure it represents the "and always will be" part... nor do I believe that's what the Imagineers or Eisner was thinking when they came up with that.

There is no trademark issue with the Chinese Theater.

There is no issue with the trademark with the theater in the park or pictures appearing in promotional material. I think there would be an issue if they tried to use it as an icon for the park. But that aside, why would Disney want to use a remake of a landmark owned by someone else as the icon for a Disney park anyway? Would they use the Eiffel Tower for Epcot?

The hat as park icon isn't actually a bad idea. It represents both "Disney" and "Hollywood." I think the bigger issue is the location of the hat in the park. Move it somewhere else and give us back the view of the Chinese Theater. The hat completely ruins the forced perspective and makes that street look even shorter than it really is (and it's short enough to begin with).

It seems that someone in management decided that all of the park icons need to have those prominent positions in the park. All of the other 3 icons follow that format. However, until that hat was built, the Earful Tower was the park icon, and you could only really see it if you took the Backlot Tour. Putting the hat in front of the theater and making it the new icon solved that problem for DHS.

No, but they use it in many of the logos for Disneyland Paris, especially merchandise.

The entire front half of that park exists as a build up to Tower of Terror. Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard help build the mood and environment leading up to the abandoned hotel. IMO, Tower of Terror is far and away the best current option for a logo of that park.

Perhaps with the exception of Kilimanjaro Safaris, no attraction is more integral to the park where it resides. What's even more impressive about it is that Tower of Terror wasn't built for park opening.

is there any possible way the original carthay building in the park could be changed, and then the chinese theatre becoming home to a new carthay theatre facade? its such a beautiful building and it seems quite iconic in terms of Walts life.

But why would you want to change one theater to another? How would that improve the park in any way?
It would only make it more similar to DCA, therefore removing some of it's uniqueness.

The Tower of Terror will never be the Icon for DHS. Why? Because probably 1/3 or more of the people who enter the park are too scared to ride it.

Besides, I love the HAT (see signature), and so do a lot of other people. I can't imagine a trip without having my picture taken in front of it. I don't even feel like I've been to WDW until I've seen the HAT.

As far as the Mann theatre goes, if you want it just to be authentic, then you'll need to have some bums sleeping in front of it with a bottle of wine in a paper bag.:D

I dont know, it's just such a tough call. I think ToT is a good idea on one hand because you can see it from so far away, but it doesn't scream DISNEY like the castle, or the tree. The hat kind of seems like it should've been a holding mark for a REAL icon. It needs something original and epic. I feel like if its a ride (especailly one that's been there for awhile) it seems kind of like they've given up on ideas. I remember the first year I went and the hat was there I was like eh, okay. I get it, but they need something better, original. They should combine the earful tower and the hat. Now that would be epic!
