New Disneyland Big Thunder effects will they come to WDW?

....You honestly think that's rope light? It's image-mapping projection, people! Yikes.
Ok, I watched the video carefully and its probably a mix of both. When a lot of sparks are flying, it's image mapping. But in darker areas where it's just the fuse, you can see the individual LEDs when you pause the video. All in all, it's an excellent lighting job.

Watch it again. It's image-mapping projection.

I remember back in the day when the rocks used to shake in the cave. Since they are too cheap to fix those, i doubt we'll be getting any of the nifty Disneyland effects.

^ I wouldn't be discouraged by Bob Weis' assignment to lead Shanghai. He was in charge of building MGM (which was an excellent, well-focused, although attraction-lite, theme park in its early years) and the re-make of DCA (which overall was a success, despite losing significant place-making in Paradise Pier to the budget axe).

I think credit/blame (depending on your view of the attraction) for Mermaid rests with Larry Nicolai and Lisa Girolami - the WDI leads for the attraction - rather than Weis. Larry is a long-time Imagineer with credits in the outstanding DLP and DisneySea parks. Don't know anything about Lisa's work, aside from Mermaid.

Lisa Girolami is very new to WDI. Her work as Producer on Mermaid and Buena Vista Street were her first big projects of size with WDI.

Blame for Mermaid definitely goes with Lisa and Larry Nikolai. To me, it feels like they let the computer do most of the design work. There are very simple design errors that should have been easily avoided.

Here's another video that captures these new cavern dynamite explosion effects pretty good. It's at the 2:00 minute mark of this video...

Now I'm the first to be Preachy McPreacher about judging things from amateur YouTube videos, but I have to say that I'm really impressed with this from what we've seen on YouTube. I can't wait to ride this for myself next week! Real life is ALWAYS better than YouTube.

But I think this whole effect is created by a combination of techniques; digital mapping projection, LED lighting, HD projections onto the smoke, the smoke blasts themselves, crystal clear audio, and some basic moving props throughout that scene (swinging lanterns, shaking dynamite crates, etc.) The sum of all those parts looks very, very impressive. Bravo Disneyland!

They used to say ignorance is bliss - but now I guess it's more accurately ignorance is blogger. Budget has nothing to do with why the rocks don't shake. Safety is the entirety of the reason - but I suppose that doesn't work as well in the "YEAH DOWN WITH TDO" mentality.

An imaginary safety issue.. an overreaction where Disney doesn't want any effect 'above' the guests after unrelated incidents at other attractions.

John Lasseter was a big part of Cars Land and he made sure his project turned out the way he wanted it to. He's one of the main reasons Cars Land turned out so great.
With Steve Jobs holding a baseball bat behind him. Imagine what would have happened to Iger and Co if Steve didn't die.

Are you kidding me right now? Imaginary? Two different Big Thunder Mountains in two different castle parks had the same effect fail and fall onto a train - one hitting a guest in the head sending them to the hospital. And as if that wasn't enough, throw in the ugly coincidence of the second incident happening on the one year anniversary of the first. Imaginary? This is why I don't read these forums anymore. Everyone knows "everything" (as long as you don't ask for reference footnotes.) Yikes.

Jobs always supported Iger. I have seen nothing to suggest he had a passion for Disney. It made him money and the stock is still doing just that.
Jobs also had a history of turning against former allies and folks who no longer suited his needs. If John told a healthy Jobs about the John Carter debacle and how Andrew Stanton and his team were treated by a man who was carrying water for Iger, I think Iger would have been on thin ice and told to shape up or else. Now it appears that 7 percent of DIS is sitting there doing nothing.

Guys, remember that time when Bob Weis let it slip on his blog that Steve thought the DCA redo wasn't ambitious enough?

This new scene replaces the shaking rocks. It is projection mapping and I'd expect it won't be confined to just DL. It's a fairly easy refit, but very effective effects. Can't always get to redo's like this immediately, though - may have to wait a little while for schedules and budgets. RE: Mermaid, can't blame the show producers for that. Larry and Lisa are excellent at what they do, and made something good out what they were assigned with the resources and direction given.
