A connection between appearance and professionalism has been implied throughout much of this thread.
You're reading that into it. There is a standard for both. One is perhaps meant to visually imply the other and make guests from around the world feel more comfortable approaching any cast member, but I don't believe most people are saying that people who look a certain way also act a certain way (again, unless that occurred in the few pages I disinterestedly skimmed of people going on about participation awards that suddenly appeared overnight).

I own a record store. I don’t care about any person’s hair style/color, nails, body art, jewelry or pronouns. I just want you to care about what you are doing, and my customers - and your spelling.

Now, if I owned a bank, I may have slightly different standards for certain positions - but not much different.

Which notified leadership
There's a difference between noting in a daily recap that you had a brief chat with a non-compliant employee and immediately running to the leadership to tattle-tale. I always documented every "serious" interaction with my CMs because I cared about them, especially since they were only with us for one year. I do the same now with my students. Not every behavior issue needs to be escalated to admin. Our BMS allows us to write a note to document behavior so we can track trends over time.

The WSW team back then was truly the dream team. I'm lucky I got to work there in its prime.

There is a connecting with Brand Identity, when you said record store it made me think of Virgin Records and then Virgin Cruise line.

I love Virgin Cruises, they have built their brand to be a bit edgy… they have the first tattoo parlor at sea - of course they are all about their staff having tattoos, piercings, wild hair etc.

I also love Celebrity Cruises, they have built their brand around a more upscale / traditional standard.

I think both are right for each company.

Disney definitely built its brand on being clean cut and “family friendly” - this included employee appearance and also how guests could behave (no drinking traditionally for example). Even today the Disney Cruise line doesn’t have a casino and they don’t sell drink packages.

This is the same company profiting off of the Booze-fest that is Epcot. The lack of drinking packages on the cruise is a combination of *slightly* an image, but that their cruises are more centered around family time and not getting plastered on the Lido Deck.

Says the requisite CMs quoted every contract cycle… complaining about their pay while doing the same exact entry level job for 10yrs…

We don’t say it - they say it themselves
As part of "team bootstrap," I've long said that if someone wants to do the entry level job for their entire career, all power to them. The grind of supervising people, having project deadlines and presenting to executives who don't know a thing about what you are talking about is not for everyone, and there is certainly something to be said for being able to punch out and leave your work problems behind. Heck, some front line CMs don't even have a company email.

That said, one certainly can't expect for their pay to change based on their financial needs. If you are just supporting yourself, you could probably swing a $18/hour job front line at WDW and make ends meet, but if you have a spouse and/or children, that won't cut it, and it's unreasonable to expect to be paid more just because you have a family. You either need to move up through the ranks, or have a spouse or partner who brings in sufficient money to close the gap.

People can do whatever they want - they just have to own the consequences. Complaining their walk-off the street job can’t support their lifestyle isn’t doing that.

I’d love to just be a beach rental person… or an arcade tech… but it won’t pay for the things i want… so i did the thing called work instead.

Who is saying that?

Starting pay is now $18 - so anyone staying multiple years would be above that I believe. Not sure how that’s calculated.

but if you have a spouse and/or children, that won't cut it, and it's unreasonable to expect to be paid more just because you have a family.
Again who is expecting that?

And the Disney company continues to negotiate with them and raise pay…. We all know the mouse isn’t charitable so it would seem that they are needed and can’t be quickly replaced by a revolving door of “entry level” employees.

Those roles that you mentioned IS work and an honorable one at that. The cast at Castaway Cay and staff at the Miami South Beach resorts we stayed at provided us with needed items and had a friendly attitude. When I enjoyed my playing time enjoying Disney Quest at Downtown Disney those cast kept the arcade games in running order. I don't look down upon these roles but I regard them as part of a big team providing a service for me and I am thankful.

Depending where a beach rental person can make a rather nice living as can an arcade tech. I know somebody that bought a rather nice house just outside NYC doing arcade maintenance/management. Both are actual jobs that involve actual work

Also trade school jobs are lucrative. A few years ago I read that a NYC elevator mechanic that got his GED then went to trade school. After a number of years on the job, his base was $140K and with OT earned $200K annually.

They don't make enough to do the things I want - that's the point. It's not about how 'honorable' the job is... it's about "if you want something, do what it takes to get it".

The last of of my kids is finishing up at Ringling... you know how much a top tier fine art program costs a year to pay for out of pocket? I didn't enjoy my last years of school... or the months I put in on the road... or the long days and weeks pushing for results. I did it because I recognized those that pursue opportunity are far more likely to get it.
