New Bus Driver Costumes

i dont like that the name tag is on the other side. i think all name tags should be in the same place, left breast. even security costumes.

Someone already mentioned the reason for the bus drivers' tags to be on the right-hand side, but there are a few other costumes around WDW that have the nametags on the opposite side, too. (As a conscious design choice, I'd presume) The Tower bellhops are the first one that come to mind. (The embroidered HTH logo is on the left side, nametag on the right.)

As for the hats, perhaps the rule (and I'm just guessing here) would be that they can take them off while driving, but any time they leave the bus they have to put them on. (Of course that would mean that there would have to be a clean, safe place for them to be able to put the hat while driving)
Kind of like a state trooper. They take their hats off in the car, but put them on when they get out.

I would guess that is the case as well. That is the rule for security as well.

I have physically seen the new duds and can say without a doubt they are very smart looking.

The hats are indeed optional.

It seems that a lot of the redesign was to create something more fitting for the disney dress and grooming standards that would better accomodate people of various sizes and shapes.

New costumes are officially here. Say goodbye to the purple costumes forever.

Good. These new ones look far more profesional and sharp. The hats should be mandatory, to complete the image and tidy up the details. Details matter a great deal.

Disney was once known for caring about the details, weren't they?

Let's hope they give the bus fleet livery a new look as well, as on my last WDW visit I noticed the garish bus colors and thought it was looking very 1992 and rather tacky.

The WDW transportation system has not had a good run these past few years. They need a fresh start, and a look that says they are modern, profesional and very squared away. Repainting the buses with a modern livery that matches these far more profesional uniforms would be the next logical step.

I am reminded of the extremely professional and polite bus drivers at Tokyo Disney Resort. When I vist Tokyo Disneyland, I usually stay at the Tokyo Bay Hilton behind Tokyo Disneyland. They have these 1930's themed buses circling the Resort at the "Good Neighbor Hotels", picking up guests and driving them to the Resort monorail station. It's only a 2 or 3 minute bus ride, but they operate these GORGEOUS themed buses with immaculately dressed bus drivers, bowing at you as you board and acting as if you are stepping aboard a grand ocean liner of the 1930's. They wear these full costumes, including the hat and white gloves, in even the muggiest and hottest of Tokyo summers that rival Orlando's oppresive climate. If Tokyo can do this, certainly WDW can too. Again, it's the details that matter. Or at least Disney used to care about the details at their American parks as much as they still care about them in Tokyo.

Can you imagine a bus service, with sharply dressed bus driver, like this for WDW???

I learned in college that nametags are typically worn on the right because that is where the eye tracks toward when shaking hands. Badges (security, police, fraternity, sorority, etc.) are worn on the left as someone mentioned earlier to be closer to the heart, and what it symbolizes.

Am I the only one in love with those buses? They are sooo cute? Why can't we have nice things like that?

Because it's cheaper and easier to just give the bus driver a baggy shirt and a generic city bus with a 1990's graphics package?

I dont think anyone realizes how expensive a "generic city bus" is when purchased. You are looking at between $320,000 and $420,000 for each vehicle depending on equipment options.
Doing something custom on a large scale would require a large committment by the purchaser. Most bus manufactuers only have the capability to produce about 1200 buses a year or so. The manufacturing time is booked out well in advance based on client orders.

I cannot fathom what a custom bus might cost for many reasons related to scheduling and factory tooling. But, if I had to hazarda guess, I would put the price at between 500 and 800 thousand dollars a piece. If you only had a small bus fleet like Tokyo, it could likely be justified. But when your fleet grows to 300 plus busses, cost really does become prohibitive. There are also other safety and government regulations in the states that would make a custom scenario incredibly costly.

I think their costumes are better than before!! :D The old costume had not the greatest colors. Sorry to say that to the people who like the old costume better…
I left WDW 3 days before they gave the new costumes out…
I wish the costumes and the buses and monorails are like Tokyo Disneyland's.

I can only assume this is a response to the # of accidents that have been happening recently.

"What do we do about all of the accidents that have been happening recently?"
"Well, we could provide better training or stiffer qualifications for our drivers."
"Why don't we just give them new uniforms... when you look good, you drive good."

I like them. However, I'm not sure if they will really tie in with the decor of the buses. Then again, who says they have to?
