My father in law had a stroke and couldn't walk very far either. We would either request on our reservation a ground floor or a room near the elevator. Since it was a medical reason, they always honored our request.

Maybe we were just lucky.

There is nothing you can do to guarantee it. All you can do is book a preferred room and request ground floor and close proximity to the front of the resort due to a medical condition. From what I have seen they seem to honor medical requests before any others.

Just call and have it noted on your reservation. Make sure they understand your request is for medical reasons and not just a preference. And (sorry if this sounds crass) make sure, when you arrive, whoever registers you sees the person in your party with the special-needs. It should make it that much easier to understand that yoru request is more of a necessity.

Contact whoever you made the booking with and get them to contact Disneys Reservations on your behalf. While it can't be guaranteed, if you don't enquire in time you'll never get it

Thnaks everyone, i will call them a few months before we leave and see what they can do.
as for 'showing' the person with special needs (?) , MS unfortuately doesnt has visual signs in its early stages, more tiredness and stufff. we are going to book a wheel chair when we get there and are prepared for the abuse!

I've never had any trouble booking a ground floor room for my Dad at POR (he's 82, and has limited mobility). Front desk staff has always been wonderful about accomodating our request. One caveat - our other rooms have not always been on the same floor with his, but the priority is Dad's comfort.

To add to what others have said, I'd call the hotel first thing in the morning on the day that you arrive and reiterate your request. By then, the room will be turned over to the hotel by Central Reservations. The decision is ultimately made by the desk staff on the day of the reservation.

I'd also call the Walt Disney World operator the day before at (407) 824-2222 and ask to speak to a front desk attendent at the Resort. They are always reluctant to transfer people (mostly because the questions people have are dumb and can be answered by a visit to any Disney website), but let them know you are checking in the next day and you need to speak to someone at the resort itself concerning a medical issue. They should get you over there and let them know of your concerns and they can probably block a room for you right over the phone.

You shouldn't wait. Call and make the request on your reservation today. As I understand it, one of the "tiebreakers" on requests is the date stamp the request was made.

If you want a room closest to the food court and bus stop, you should pay for a Preferred room.

I travelled with my family in December '07. I have a 3 years old Special needs child who was on a feeding tube and other monitors at night, etc. I booked 2 rooms and requested connecting rooms. They actually have a special needs department and had no problem accomodating my request. In fact they even asked if we would need any special medical equiptment in the room because they could refer me to vendors. I would call back and say you need to speak with the special needs department. Good Luck.

we dont want the 'preferred'room, as we are to fat or lazy to walk.
one of our party has a medical condition, and i dont think we should pay extra to have a ground floor room, under these circumstances. we arent all expecting to have ground floor rooms, but hope to make it enjoyable for my sister, she can have a ground floor room near facilities.

This is my understanding as well, Get in touch with the booking party ( Disney or your travel agent) and have them put in this request for medical reasons as soon as possible! Belle

My point is that those who pay for the preferred rooms (Calypso buildings at All-Star Music) will get them before those who "request" them, even if it is a medical request. Just trying to set realistic expectations.

You can't pay for a ground floor room, it is only a request. You can pay for the proximity to the facilities.

If she doesn't mind being 1 set of buildings away from the main buildings then there is no problem.

FYI, I walk on crutches and have since age 2. I don't count on the kindness of the room assigners to put me in a location that I can pay for and guarantee, if at all possible.

I hope you all have a wonderful trip!

sorry to sound snappy!
i just think its unfair that to have a request for a room on the ground floor, just so happens to be what disney called a prefered room. if it were down to us we would 'prefer' to be at the back in the peace and quiet.
i will write to the resort, and hope they can sort it out for us.then again fingers crossed for an upgrade.that would really make our day!

Writing to or faxing the resort will do you no good. They will not take room requests through the fax or the mail...they will hit the circular file. Everything needs to go through the main reservation number or through the special needs department. The suggestion of paying for a preferred room was a very valid suggestion. In the case of the values the preferred rooms are those in the area that you are wanting to stay...close to the lobby/bus stops. They will fill those rooms in this order...Guests that have paid for them first, requests for special needs second, and free upgrades next. If you want to do the most to guarantee a ground floor room close to the front booking a preferred room will at least get you half way there. If you do not book a preferred room you do run the risk of being put farther from the front.

Even paying for a preferred room doesn't guarantee a ground floor room, just location. The best bet would be to pay for preferred and also make the request for ground floor.

There's two issues here. If you want to be close to the food court/store/bus stop, you'll need to pay for a preferred room. If you don't, they may upgrade you upon request but won't go out of their way to try. If, OTOH, you are just concerned about being on the ground floor, perhaps near the parking lot if you're driving, just noting this on the reservation, ASAP, should do the trick.
