My First Trip Report

I’ve never written a trip report before, but I figured since I caused all kinds of commotion last week with my *special gathering post*, I should at least report what happened.

Wednesday – June 4th

I left my house at 8:05am and was on the tram heading into MGM at 11:00am. I can’t recommend the Annual Pass enough. It just makes everything so much simpler, especially if you stay on property.

I decided my MGM trip this year would be my ‘Stop Being A Wus’ tour. I was going to ride both ToT and RNRC. So, my first stop was to fastpass RNRC and head over to ToT. It was only a 20 minute wait, which is much better than I was expecting for a summer trip.

Some of you have seen my posts on MGM in the past, and I stand by my statements that this is the least Disney of the four parks. The layout and the execution are just not up to par, IMHO. That being said, I was very impressed with the theming and the detail of ToT. It was an excellent experience, much better than I expected it to be. As for the actual ride, I got one of the cars that have seatbelts and no handrails. I also got stuck in the front row. I have to say I really enjoyed it. As you can tell by my avatar, I’m a thin guy, and the seatbelt didn’t really fit snugly, so I left my seat every time the elevator dropped. ;) What surprised me is how short the ride was. I guess that’s why people get right back in line when they get off this ride.

On a side note, there has been a lot of vitriol about gay days on this web site in the last couple of weeks, the main point seeming to be: “Why do you need a special day?” While waiting in line for ToT, a guy behind me asked me about fastpass, so I explained to him how it works and gave him some of the strategies I use to cut down on wait times. I was answering a question about groups or something when his son, who looked to be about 13, pipes up with “What a bunch of queers!” So, on my first ride, on the first day of my trip, this is what I get. I gave the son a look, stopped talking to the dad, turned around and tried to pretend they didn’t exist.

I can’t explain to you how much this kind of offhand comment hurts. Verbal gay bashing is the only form of discrimination that people can still get away with. You would never be in line at Disney and hear “What a bunch of ni**ers!” And that, boys and girls, is why I enjoy gay days so much. It’s much harder to make comments about a group of people who outnumber you.

On to RNRC! I didn’t realize until I was in line that this ride actually goes upside down. I almost turned around and left, but decided to give a try. You only live once, right? The theming was excellent, and I was smiling until I got up to the cars and saw how fast the coaster takes off. Again, I almost turned around, but decided to tough it out. So I get loaded into the car (second row, of course. I keep getting stuck up front on rides that scare me!), wait a couple of minutes, and the we’re told to get back out of the car for some reason. After reading some of the posts about RNRC that last couple of weeks and all the problems they seem to be having with it, I thought I might not get to ride it after all. However, after a couple of minutes they loaded us on to another car, and off we went. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it (you never would have guessed from the picture, which showed me gritting my teeth and hanging on for dear life)! Again, being on the thin side, the harness wasn’t all that snug, and I left my seat a couple of times. And again, I was surprised how short the ride was.

So, having conquered my fears, I just started wandering around, killing some time until check in at Caribbean Beach. I rode Star Tours, which I always enjoy, and then headed over to Muppet Vision. Since I wasn’t in a rush, I really got to pay attention to the theming of this attraction, and I have to say some of it is quite brilliant. Again, a favorite that I always enjoy.

From there, I did the Backlot Tour. I don’t know if it was because it wasn’t all that busy, but the pre-show showing some of the effects from Pearl Harbor was not playing. I actually found that to be an improvement, as the wait time was almost nothing. I have to say I like the little stunt show with people in the audience getting drenched on the boat. The poor guy in the engine room obviously didn’t know what was coming, and his reaction was priceless. As for the ride itself, I still like the Catastrophe Canyon part, but the props along the way are starting to look a little tired.

I was going to do the GMR, but a CM told me the rehab wouldn’t be complete until Sunday, so I had to skip it. I did the One Man’s Dream show. I’m glad they kept that after the 100 YoM celebration ended. It’s nice to hear his story in his own words, even if it’s a little startling to see him doing the voice of Mickey.

From there I got in line at the Disney Animation attraction, and walked past the point in line where it said ’30 minute wait from this point’. So, I waited 30 minutes, got right up to the point of entry, and was told I would have to wait for the next show. L I was a little ticked, so I got out of line and went to Sounds Dangerous. I have to admit I’m not a Drew Carrey (sp?) fan, but I enjoy this attraction. The sound system in there is awesome.

It was now about 3:30 and the storm clouds were moving in. As those of you who live in Florida know, in the summertime it rains almost every day sometime between 3 and 4 pm. So, I decided to head to the hotel and check in. Right after I got on the tram it started sprinkling, and by the time I got to my car it was pouring. I could complain, but what would be the point?

Just a quick note about Caribbean Beach: It’s absolutely beautiful. The grounds and the buildings were immaculate, and there were ducks and rabbits and turtles all over the place. The theming is outstanding, especially the beaches and the food court area. The rooms themselves are standard Disney fair: a rectangular room with two beds, a TV, two sinks and a shower. Comfy. And CLEAN!

After dinner and a nap (and locking myself out of my room when the rain let up and I went to get my stuff out of the car), I headed off to PI. Some of you are aware that during this week there are circuit parties and other events, but kids on drugs is just not my scene, so I don’t go to those events. In fact, since I quit smoking last year, my only vice now is beer!

The night started off at the Comedy Warehouse. I ran into RPM at the bus stop (he was staying at Caribbean also), and we went in together. I was a little disappointed that MKT didn’t show up. I was really looking forward to meeting him. The show, as always, was great. It’s a great way to start off of a night of fun. In fact, I went to PI all four nights and started each one at the Comedy Warehouse. It was a different show each night, with different actors and even a different keyboard player each night. Quite simply, the comedians there are amazing.

From there, it was on to 8-Trax, where I ran into some friends and pretty much camped there for the rest of the night. I really like this place. Friendly bartenders and DJ’s, great theming and great music. Just a lot of fun.

I’ll post day 2 later…

Good reports, Gary. Quick question--were you in the parks by yourself or was someone(s) doing all this stuff with you?

The first three days I was in the parks by myself, although I ran into some friends while on the AK tour. I couldn't find them after the tour, however.

I kinda like being in the parks on my own. No arguments about where to go or what to do next or how long to stay, etc. I'll give and example of this on day 4. Stay tuned!!

Sorry to hear about your run-in  If I had said something like that at 13, my mom would have marched me right back to the hotel! And left me there!!!!!!

Erika,

We must've had the same mom. Iwould have had my mouth washed out with soap right n the middle of the park, she'd have made me apologize to whomever and I would have spent the rest of my vacation alone in a room. I am glad she was like this though. I have been able to teach my children better then that thanks to her. In fact, we just changed schools because my kids didn't like the kind of names people used against eachother in a private school. The thing about it all is, it's a learned behavior. My children have been exposed (not the right word sorry) to all types of people and they would never think of any of them as anything but a friend. No names would ever come to mind. It's appalling that parents allow some of this behavior to be tolerated on any level.

Can't blame ya. I'll be up again in December, actually. Maybe I'll run into to you then. ;)

Thumbs UP....wow, great trip report... nice to see a comprehensive report so well-written, easy to follow and, most importantly, interesting.:sohappy:

...the 13 year old needs a good hop in the a$$...and it should have been the brainless parents to give it to him. I can't even pretend to know how I would have reacted but it would have been with far less class than you showed.

Exactly! This is what has made his report so easy to read. Gary has set the new standard!

Day 3 – June 6th

After another great night at PI, I was up and off to Epcot for the Undiscovered Future World tour at 8:45. For some reason, the people working the gates weren’t quite sure where to send us. I was lucky enough to get somebody who knew where to send me, so I was at Guest Services at 8:45 (once again getting that secret thrill of getting in the park before everyone else), but other members of the tour were either sent to the wrong tour or were not let in until the park opened.

The tour didn’t start until 9:00, so our guide (I forget her name, but she couldn’t have been more than five feet tall and was a real sweetheart) told me I could wander around a bit, just as long as I was back at Guest Services by 9:00. So, I wandered around a bit, taking pics of an empty park, of the people waiting behind the rope to get in (secret thrill), of some of the spectacular landscaping (the Garden Festival hadn’t ended yet), one of the park managers riding a Segway, and a few other things. It was really neat to take some pics unfettered by guests.

Our first stop was Innoventions East and the home of the future. I’ve read about most of the technology, but I’ve never seen it working. There was the refrigerator/stove, the Japanese toilet (I’m not sure why, but there’s something about smart toilets that give me the heebee jeebees), the big screen TV/Jacuzzi, and the wheelchair that can go up and down stairs and can be raised to get stuff off of shelves. The lady who gave the demonstration was a hoot. Neat stuff.

From there it was off to The Living Seas. Unlike the AK tour I took yesterday, this one does goes behind the scenes, and this was our first behind the scenes peek. First, we got to go into the Coral Seas restaurant. This may not sound like a big deal, but it was years before I even knew it was there (if you’re not looking for it, you can easily miss it), and there was no way I’d ever be able to afford eating there, so it was quite a thrill for me to get a look at it. It’s a spectacular looking place. Just walking down the hallway had all of us looking around in wonder, and the dining room was simply amazing. It has a fantastic view of the aquarium(s), the tables are laid out in waves, and the table tops look like some kind of funky metal coral.

From there we went to the sponsors’ lounge and meeting spaces. Our guide explained to us that every company that sponsors an attraction has rooms in the attraction they can use for meetings, to entertain clients, etc. In fact, Disney employees are not allowed entrance to these rooms unless the sponsor says it’s OK. Since Living Seas in no longer sponsored, we were able to check things out.

The entrance room looked like something out of the 70’s, complete with control panels with big clunky buttons and tiny black and white TV’s. Not very impressive. Once we got upstairs, however, things changed dramatically. There were two rooms, a lounge area and a meeting area with tables. We were allowed into the lounge area, which was stunning. It was hard to believe it wasn’t being used. All of the furniture and furnishings looked brand new and the view of the aquariums was, again, spectacular. There was even a see-thru grand piano! I don’t know if it was glass, because we weren’t allowed near it. We were allowed to take pictures, tho. Once I’ve gone through my pics (all 150), I’ll try and post some of them. I would have been happy to hang in that room for a couple of hours.

From there, we headed to The Land, and a short break. Fortunately, the break was long enough for me to ride Living With The Land, one of my favorite attractions at Epcot. It was early, and it seems everyone heads to Test Track first thing (and with good reason, as I’ll explain a little later), so there was no wait and I got right on. The guide couldn’t keep her microphone working, but I was close to the front so I could still hear everything. Poor thing looked frustrated, tho.

After the ride, our group got back together and went behind the scenes of Living With The Land! I’ve always wanted to take the hour-long tour, but can never seem to find the time. We couldn’t take pictures until we were inside one of the greenhouses, but we could take as many pics as we liked, once inside. The girl giving the tour of this attraction was a perky little thing from Minnesota. Another sweetheart. Where does Disney get these people? ;)

One of the really neat things she showed us was a plant that closed its’ leaves when touched. You just don’t expect a plant to behave like that, and our entire group got a kick out of it. We also got to look inside one of the misting machines, and we got a look at some ways to set up greenhouses and hydroponics in the home. I also took some pics of the boat tours going by. It’s kind of neat to be part of the attraction.

We then went inside the Imagination building. We got to go up to the roped-off 2nd floor, which provided a stunning view of the park. Not much else to see, tho.

From there it was on to the Universe of Energy. I have read on this site (or maybe it was from a friend) that this tour lets you on to the floor of Ellen’s Energy Adventure after the ride vehicles go by. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to do that. According to our guide, there was a management decision to keep quests out of areas that having moving ride vehicles. I asked her if there had ever been an incident, and she said no. It was understandable, but disappointing.

Next, we got to go behind Test Track. Not to far behind, tho. We got to see an area where physically challenged (is that PC or WHAT!!) guests can test their ability to get in and out of the ride vehicles. There wasn’t much to see, but no pics were allowed, for some reason.

From there, we got to go to Castmember Services. I’m not sure if that’s the right name, but it’s where the break room, locker room, banking services, wardrobe, etc. are located. For the most part, the castmembers ignored us, with a few (cute) exceptions. The place is truly huge, very well organized, and busy. I saw several tables in a hallway promoting diversity. I asked our tour guide if that had anything to do with this weekend, and she explained that it’s Cultural Diversity Month, and this stuff would have been there regardless of Gay Days. Certainly put a spring in my step.

I have to tell you that at this point, we passed a rack with the castmember newsletter. The current issue had Finding Nemo on the cover. It took every ounce of self control not to try to snag one, or at least read some of it.

As we exited the building, we headed down a hallway that had sections painted by castmembers from each attraction and pavilion. What a phenomenal amount of talent there is at WDW! It was really well done, with the highlight being a lit Figment!

Then, we went to a little trailer to meet a castmember from Japan. Again, another little thing that could not have been more than five feet tall, and cute as a button. She explained some of the things she had learned some coming over here. For example, how to sleep on a bed as opposed to a mattress on the floor, that you need a car to live in Florida, and that she had put on ten pounds since coming here because she’s addicted to pizza and McDonald’s. ;)

After that, all that was left was to see where the barge for the nighttime show is docked. We couldn’t get to close, and we couldn’t take pics, but it was impressive anyway.

After that, we thanked our guide, and she gave us a tour pin (I got one for the AK tour also, which I forgot to mention), and a fastpass for Test Track. Not just any fastpass, but a fastpass that never expires and allows us to enter through the souvenir shop in order to jump ahead of everybody! How cool is that?

We went back on stage in a China souvenir shop, and there was a shirt that immediately caught my eye. It was in Mandarin, and it said ‘To Be’ on the front, and ‘Or Not To Be’ on the back. It thought it was pretty sharp, so I grabbed it and headed to the cashier. On my way, a gentleman stopped me and asked if I’d like my name in Mandarin on the shirt. It only cost another $5, so of course I said yes. It’s the little things like this that fuel my love of WDW.

At this point, I had a choice. Head over to Test Track before the afternoon showers hit, or take a chance, see the updated China Circlevision movie and grab some food (I was starving by this point). Hunger won out, so I ate, then did the new film. The pre-show now has a Chinese native playing some songs on a native Chinese instrument (she told us what it was called, but there’s no way I’ll remember it).The music was quite lovely. I really love the Circlevision movies, and they really seemed to have tightened things up on this. It was spectacular image after image. Very well done.

From there I did Maelstrom. I always ride this one. It’s cute and kitschy. Plus, I like the trolls with the eyes that light up. There was NO ONE on this ride but me. How weird is that?

I’ve never gotten to ride the Figment ride, so I did this one next. I have to say, after reading so much about Figment on this site, my expectations were pretty high. I have to say I found it pretty lame. It’s just a personal opinion, so don’t flame me, but I just didn’t see what the big deal was. And I’m a BIG Eric Idle fan.

From there I hit The Living Seas again, this time going into the attraction. I was actually hoping they would have some fish mobiles that I’ve seen in some pet stores, but they didn’t really have much in the way of merchandise, so I wandered around and looked at the various tanks and displays. I couldn’t remember if they were there in December, but there were two huge marine turtles that were simply breathtaking. At one point, one of the turtles swam right up to the tank and then swam slowly by. Stunning.

I really wish they would do something with the ride vehicles on the attraction. Either rehab them or remove them and let us walk underneath the tanks. I really miss that view.

Quick side note: A friend of mine took the three hour dive tour and couldn’t stop talking about it. He said he had little kids trying to stick food through the aquarium glass. It’s expensive, but here swears it’s worth every penny.

I had decided to do two more things before heading back to the hotel. First, I needed to head to Mousegear and get a red t-shirt. Can you believe I forgot to pack one? Then, I was going to use my super-fastpass on Test Track and head back. Upon exiting the hydrolators, however, I had to change my plans.

The doors opened onto a monsoon! There was a crowd of people there waiting for the rain to let up. So much for Test Track. One of the ladies that got off the hydrolator with me started complaining how much she hates Florida. “It’s hot as hell and then it rains!” So, I stuck my camera in the bag with my ‘To Be Or Not To Be’ shirt, told her “You get used to it” and hauled off to Mouseworks.

Arriving at Mousegear completely soaked, I tried to navigate the crowds for a red shirt. This place was packed with kids, and I got nearly run over by strollers at least three times. However, I was able to find a ‘Donald’s Attitude Academy’ shirt that I really liked.

At that point, the rain had let up a bit, so I hit Spaceship Earth before heading back to the hotel. It just doesn’t feel like a proper Epcot trip without a visit to SE. I still can’t find the hidden Mickey’s, tho. ;)

After dinner and a nap, I was off once again to PI. I met my friends at the Comedy Warehouse for the 9:15 show, and we got seats right up front. Again, a fantastic show. By this time quite a few gays had arrived at WDW, and any hint of a gay joke was met with thunderous applause.

From there it was off to 8-Trax and then Mannequins. Neither bar was as crowded as the night before, and I was able to jump back and forth, which I like to do (I hate being in one place too long). I don’t know how many of you have danced on the spinning floor at Mannequins, but it’s an amazing experience. It’s surprising to me that people aren’t injured getting on and off that thing, as quickly as it turns. But the music was great, the crowd awesome and the night another blast.

I asked one of the bartenders whether they looked forward to this weekend. She told me that this weekend is the busiest weekend of the year for PI.

I ended up staying until about 1:00, and then headed back to hotel to get some sleep before the big day at MK!!

I’ll post day 4 tomorrow…

Excellent stuff!

I remember visiting the lounge in the Seas...I wanted to stay for a bit longer but my boss said we had to go :(. The pavilion is quite bland but once you see this lounge it's a totally different story. Fancy fancy!

Question: Is it true that you get a discount after you take one of the backstage tours?

Thanks for the memories! I loved the backstage tour you took. I had been many times in the lounge of the Living Seas. As I remember, the piano is not glass -I can almost swear it´s not- but it´s very cool! Did your pictures come out good? None of my pics of that lounge came out good, as the flash reflects on the aquarium windows! Bummer...
Did they take you up to the top of the aquarium? Where you can walk a bit on top of the tank and see the dolphins?

Isn´t Cast Services cool?! It never ceased to amaze me that huge long window where you get the costumes from. Tons of them and a lot of lockers too! :animwink:

Can´t believe you forgot the red t-shirt! The good thing is that there is always a store near you while in WDW!

Waiting for the rest of the report! :animwink:

We were offered a 20% discount off of lunch in China, but I'm not a chinese food guy, so I didn't take advantage of it. I did get a discount on the tour for being an annual passholder.

I'll do my best to get the report up for you. It's been all go since I got back. I'm actually heading out to my VJ gig in a couple of minutes. I'm glad you're enjoying it!

PS - Tell you daughter that if she wants to be a diva, try to be more Annie Lennox and less Mariah Carey... :D

I wonder why specifically in China... why not somewhere else. Would have been good one for the Coral Reef... hehehe

Thanks for the kind words. We didn't get to go on top to see the dolphins. Maybe they've changed that because of the diving tour?

Also, I think they have refurbished the wardrobe area, because there was a sign announcing the grand re-opening in 2002, and I didn't see any long window. Then again, would couldn't take pics and I'm getting to be a old f*rt, so I might be mistaken.

I can't believe I forgot my red shirt either! Although, I did remember to bring my "I See Drunk People" shirt. It was a big hit on Saturday!

I guess because that's were we end up after the tour. I did forget to mention that we were offered premium seating in Italy for the nighttime show. I wasn't able to take advantage of it, but that's a pretty nice perk.
