My First Trip Report

I’ve never written a trip report before, but I figured since I caused all kinds of commotion last week with my *special gathering post*, I should at least report what happened.

Wednesday – June 4th

I left my house at 8:05am and was on the tram heading into MGM at 11:00am. I can’t recommend the Annual Pass enough. It just makes everything so much simpler, especially if you stay on property.

I decided my MGM trip this year would be my ‘Stop Being A Wus’ tour. I was going to ride both ToT and RNRC. So, my first stop was to fastpass RNRC and head over to ToT. It was only a 20 minute wait, which is much better than I was expecting for a summer trip.

Some of you have seen my posts on MGM in the past, and I stand by my statements that this is the least Disney of the four parks. The layout and the execution are just not up to par, IMHO. That being said, I was very impressed with the theming and the detail of ToT. It was an excellent experience, much better than I expected it to be. As for the actual ride, I got one of the cars that have seatbelts and no handrails. I also got stuck in the front row. I have to say I really enjoyed it. As you can tell by my avatar, I’m a thin guy, and the seatbelt didn’t really fit snugly, so I left my seat every time the elevator dropped. ;) What surprised me is how short the ride was. I guess that’s why people get right back in line when they get off this ride.

On a side note, there has been a lot of vitriol about gay days on this web site in the last couple of weeks, the main point seeming to be: “Why do you need a special day?” While waiting in line for ToT, a guy behind me asked me about fastpass, so I explained to him how it works and gave him some of the strategies I use to cut down on wait times. I was answering a question about groups or something when his son, who looked to be about 13, pipes up with “What a bunch of queers!” So, on my first ride, on the first day of my trip, this is what I get. I gave the son a look, stopped talking to the dad, turned around and tried to pretend they didn’t exist.

I can’t explain to you how much this kind of offhand comment hurts. Verbal gay bashing is the only form of discrimination that people can still get away with. You would never be in line at Disney and hear “What a bunch of ni**ers!” And that, boys and girls, is why I enjoy gay days so much. It’s much harder to make comments about a group of people who outnumber you.

On to RNRC! I didn’t realize until I was in line that this ride actually goes upside down. I almost turned around and left, but decided to give a try. You only live once, right? The theming was excellent, and I was smiling until I got up to the cars and saw how fast the coaster takes off. Again, I almost turned around, but decided to tough it out. So I get loaded into the car (second row, of course. I keep getting stuck up front on rides that scare me!), wait a couple of minutes, and the we’re told to get back out of the car for some reason. After reading some of the posts about RNRC that last couple of weeks and all the problems they seem to be having with it, I thought I might not get to ride it after all. However, after a couple of minutes they loaded us on to another car, and off we went. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it (you never would have guessed from the picture, which showed me gritting my teeth and hanging on for dear life)! Again, being on the thin side, the harness wasn’t all that snug, and I left my seat a couple of times. And again, I was surprised how short the ride was.

So, having conquered my fears, I just started wandering around, killing some time until check in at Caribbean Beach. I rode Star Tours, which I always enjoy, and then headed over to Muppet Vision. Since I wasn’t in a rush, I really got to pay attention to the theming of this attraction, and I have to say some of it is quite brilliant. Again, a favorite that I always enjoy.

From there, I did the Backlot Tour. I don’t know if it was because it wasn’t all that busy, but the pre-show showing some of the effects from Pearl Harbor was not playing. I actually found that to be an improvement, as the wait time was almost nothing. I have to say I like the little stunt show with people in the audience getting drenched on the boat. The poor guy in the engine room obviously didn’t know what was coming, and his reaction was priceless. As for the ride itself, I still like the Catastrophe Canyon part, but the props along the way are starting to look a little tired.

I was going to do the GMR, but a CM told me the rehab wouldn’t be complete until Sunday, so I had to skip it. I did the One Man’s Dream show. I’m glad they kept that after the 100 YoM celebration ended. It’s nice to hear his story in his own words, even if it’s a little startling to see him doing the voice of Mickey.

From there I got in line at the Disney Animation attraction, and walked past the point in line where it said ’30 minute wait from this point’. So, I waited 30 minutes, got right up to the point of entry, and was told I would have to wait for the next show. L I was a little ticked, so I got out of line and went to Sounds Dangerous. I have to admit I’m not a Drew Carrey (sp?) fan, but I enjoy this attraction. The sound system in there is awesome.

It was now about 3:30 and the storm clouds were moving in. As those of you who live in Florida know, in the summertime it rains almost every day sometime between 3 and 4 pm. So, I decided to head to the hotel and check in. Right after I got on the tram it started sprinkling, and by the time I got to my car it was pouring. I could complain, but what would be the point?

Just a quick note about Caribbean Beach: It’s absolutely beautiful. The grounds and the buildings were immaculate, and there were ducks and rabbits and turtles all over the place. The theming is outstanding, especially the beaches and the food court area. The rooms themselves are standard Disney fair: a rectangular room with two beds, a TV, two sinks and a shower. Comfy. And CLEAN!

After dinner and a nap (and locking myself out of my room when the rain let up and I went to get my stuff out of the car), I headed off to PI. Some of you are aware that during this week there are circuit parties and other events, but kids on drugs is just not my scene, so I don’t go to those events. In fact, since I quit smoking last year, my only vice now is beer!

The night started off at the Comedy Warehouse. I ran into RPM at the bus stop (he was staying at Caribbean also), and we went in together. I was a little disappointed that MKT didn’t show up. I was really looking forward to meeting him. The show, as always, was great. It’s a great way to start off of a night of fun. In fact, I went to PI all four nights and started each one at the Comedy Warehouse. It was a different show each night, with different actors and even a different keyboard player each night. Quite simply, the comedians there are amazing.

From there, it was on to 8-Trax, where I ran into some friends and pretty much camped there for the rest of the night. I really like this place. Friendly bartenders and DJ’s, great theming and great music. Just a lot of fun.

I’ll post day 2 later…

Hey Gary, thanks for the trip report! I have to say "How brave!" Your first ride on ToT and you got the seatbelt! Then second row on RnRC! :sohappy: Although, I have to say that the last car is the most fun! Nothing like seeing all the rest of the limos turning upside down on top of yours! :D

I am a big fan of Comedy Warehouse too! Lucky! I am glad you found RPM. At least I know now that your special thread was not a waste! :animwink:

I´ll be waiting for the rest of the report! :animwink:

Gary I really enjoyed reading your trip report. I'm so sorry that you had to endure someone who obviously was not raised very well. What happened to the old adage "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all ?" Did you meet many other forum members while you were there? It's too bad that you didn't get to meet Rob.(MKT) He is such a nice person. I had the opportunity to meet him during my May trip when we had dinner at Boma's. I will be meeting with him this Saturday for dinner also. I can't wait to read day 2.:D

Gary:

Sorry you had that experience at MGM. I have several gay friends and I know how much that hurts.

That being said, I do not agree with you that, "Verbal gay bashing is the only form of discrimination that people can still get away with."

Women are discriminated against and verbally bashed every day. It happens in public, in the workplace, everywhere. Minorities as well. As far as people not being able to say ni**er, well that's not true either. I've heard it countless times.

It's funny though because black people can call each other the "N" word and it's sort of endearing to them. Strange that.

Anyway, discrimination of all kinds is happening every day around the world. Please don't discount others' struggles.

Day Two – June 5th

After an excellent first night, it was up and off to Animal Kingdom for the ‘Wild By Design’ tour at 8:15am. But first, a quick note on bus vs car at WDW. I’m not a big fan of the buses, even as necessary as they are. I prefer to drive to the parks and take the buses to PI. I’ve been to WDW enough times that I can get around without getting lost, parking is included with both the annual pass and the hotel key, and I don’t have to worry about packing kids and all of their various accessories. Plus, I have a bus story I’ll save for later.

So, the tour. One of the neat things about taking a tour at WDW is the you get to go into the parks a little earlier than the people standing in line. I have to admit I get a secret little thrill from the looks on people’s faces as I’m strolling by them. ;)

On this tour, we were handed out wireless headphones while our guide, a retired teacher from Michigan, wore a wireless microphone. This was a really high quality setup, and I have to admit I found it a lot easier to hear what the guide was saying over the noise of park and its’ guests.

Unlike the Keys to the Kingdom tour I took in December, there wasn’t any ‘behind the scenes’ action. It was more an explanation of some of the design and layout decisions the imagineers made and why they made them. For example, in the queue for the Kali River Rapids, there is a temple that has shelves on the outside. Originally, the imagineers put shoes on them, as the custom in Asia is to remove your shoes before entering a temple. However, Asian guests would also remove their shoes before entering, and they would come out of the ride to find their Nike’s stolen! So, the imagineers took the shoes back off and put up a ‘shoes must be worn at all times’ sign. Neat, huh?

We also got to meet some of the animal experts that work at AK, and found a bunch of hidden Mickey’s. The tour lasted until a little bit after noon. I really enjoyed it. Our tour guide was excellent, and I learned quite a bit about the animals and the park itself. The one point our guide tried to express was to explore the park. If there is a path without a ‘castmembers only’ sign, take it and see where it leads. After the tour I took that advice and saw some really neat stuff, with almost no one else around.

Another side note: A friend of mine took the Backstage Magic tour, and got to see the baby elephant that was born there recently. He also got to go behind a couple of the attractions. I’m going to take that tour when I go back up in December.

After the tour, I headed to the Safari ride. I had gotten a fastpass during a break in the tour, and got on almost immediately. IMHO, this is one of the best rides in all of WDW. It’s different every time I go, as far as the animals are concerned. I never miss this one.

From there, on to ‘It’s Tough To Be A Bug’. There’s something about these 3D rides. They just don’t work for me. I don’t know if it’s the shape of my head or what. It’s the same thing at Universal. While the images I see are in 3D, they never get close enough to startle me. Regardless, I laugh at this attraction every time, and that’s good enough for me. I still get a kick out of people’s reaction when the bugs head for the exit under their tushies.

From there, it was on to Dinosaur and Dinoland. I decided to fastpass the roller coaster and head in to Dinosaur. I like the preshow because I like the lady from the Cosby Show. Right as we were about to enter the ride, it broke down. So, we were given a fastpass good for any time during the rest of the day, and escorted out of the building while they tried to fix it.

It was too soon to use the fastpass to the roller coaster (the name escapes me), so I decided to grab a coke and just cool my heels for a bit. I rarely do that at the parks. It feels like I’m wasting money just sitting there. I started to go into the stand by line because it said ’15 minute wait’, but once I got in there, it looked a lot longer than 15 minutes, so I got back out again.

Soon enough, my fastpass time came up, and I got on the coaster. I have to admit, after conquering ToT and RNRC, this ride came off pretty tame. Still, it has it moments.

After that, I checked to see if Dinosaur was running yet. It wasn’t, so I decided to head to the ‘Kali River Rapids’. I try to save this ride for last, because I hate walking around a park completely soaked, but I didn’t have much choice, so off I went.

By this time in the afternoon, the fastpass machines had been turned off, and I had no choice but to wait in line. The wait was 60 minutes, but there wasn’t much else to do. It’ll be nice when the new coaster opens.

One of the reasons I hate waiting in line is that I get frustrated with people who just stand around talking to each other, oblivious to every one else, not moving when the line starts moving. It’s a pet peeve, but it drives me completely insane. By the time I got on the ride itself, I was highly annoyed.

However, as short as it is, I really like this attraction. It’s very well themed and executed, and by this time in the day, the water is a really nice change to the stifling heat. I also like the sadistic touch of giving people on a bridge above the chance to soak other guests by pressing buttons that activate a few elephant snouts. By the time I got off the ride, my mood had brightened again.

I stopped by a kiosk on the way back to Dinosaur to purchase a wind chime I had noticed earlier. For those of you who don’t know, if you’re staying on property you can have your purchases delivered back to your hotel at no charge, which means you don’t have to lug your souvenirs around the parks all day. Also, at my hotel, they had free gift wrapping!

With perfect timing, I got back to Dinosaur just as it was re-opening. I got right on! It seemed darker than usual for some reason. Maybe it was just me. Anyway, it was an excellent way to end my AK day, so back to the hotel I went.

After dinner and a nap (no food details, I ate fast food just about every day!), it was off to PI. A few friends had come up from Ft Lauderdale and I met them for the 9:15 show at the Comedy Warehouse. As good as the show was yesterday, it was better today. Again, an excellent way to start an evening.

From there it was on to 8-Trax. It was 80’s night at 8-Trax. It was also employee night! 8-Trax was PACKED! Mannequins was so busy I never made it inside. Needless to say, I had a blast. I couldn’t stay too late, tho. I had an Epcot tour tomorrow!

I will post day 3 tomorrow…

Sorry to hear about your run-in  If I had said something like that at 13, my mom would have marched me right back to the hotel! And left me there!!!!!!

Good reports, Gary. Quick question--were you in the parks by yourself or was someone(s) doing all this stuff with you?

My question as well! Thanks for the reporting... these are so much fun.

I, too, am sorry about the run in. It is my goal as a parent that my kids know better than that. If I were that kids dad I would've felt like a complete moron. But enough with that... on with the reporting! :D
