I voted for MSEP mainly because I LOVE LOVE LOVE the music! It's upbeat, catchy, bouncy, fun, whimsical, happy-sounding, and completely addictive to me.

Spectro, on the other hand, has "elegant" music that is slower and less upbeat and less happy-sounding, that doesn't make me want to clap along or tap my feet to it, the way MSEP music does. I think in addition to the synth vs orchestral factor, an even bigger factor is the massive difference in TEMPO between the two tracks that makes MSEP the clear favorite in my eyes!

As for the MSEP sound being "outdated" - in my eyes, synths could NEVER sound outdated - they certainly sound more "space-age" and "futuristic" to me than just about any music being made today! Not to mention, I find synths extremely fun to listen to, and play "air-keyboard" to! ;)

Spectro has since grown on me and I enjoy it as well, but now I am remembering the very first time I saw it and my first impression of it was that the music felt more "somber" and "serious" and slower and not nearly as FUN and upbeat and lively as the MSEP, and this different musical atmosphere set a tone that affected my perception of the parade as a whole of being a significant loss of much of the "Magic", "Wonder", and pure JOY I felt while watching the MSEP!

I am so surprised Spactro is wining :sohappy:. Nothing beats that music on a nice night, even before the show with Jiminy cricket hosting and making the announcements. The Eletrical Parade is good but could never compare to the warm feeling of Spectro Magic. I hope they didnt make the music tackier like they did to the eletrical parades remake, but I am glad they refurbished because the parade lights were getting pretty dim to me.

Right on!!

I see the two as being quite similar visually. With that in mind, the difference has to be in the sound track. When it comes to sound tracks - there is no comparison. The Spectro sound track is fabulous and uses a great arrangement that can include other melodies. The MSEP sountrack, on the other hand, to me is cheezy. I find the 70's synthesizer music too outdated and not worth any kind of nostalgic value.

You took the words right out of my mouth! We are on the same page 100%.
I definitely favor Spectromagic and will be bummed out this Dec., when we arrive for our annual Christmas visit, if SPECTRO is not being offered.:sohappy::xmas:

It was very close but voted MSEP just because it's the orignal - bring back the Dumbo/Casey Jr. Section with the Calliope and MSEP would win every time.

Where did the Main Street Eletrical Parade origionate? I read somewhere that it started in Disney World.

Original MSEP began at Disneyland in 1972 as DLs response to WDWs Electrical Water Pageant. It ran primarily during the peak summer season. Due to its success, similar nighttime parades were built in Orlando (1977) and Tokyo (1985). Once SpectroMagic debuted, WDWs Electrical Parade went to Paris in 1992. Tokyo's original Electrical Parade was replaced by Fantillusion (1995), which was then replaced by the current Dreamlights parade (2001). (Fantillusion was sent to Paris to replace our MSEP and debuted in 2003).

Disneyland's MSEP ended its original run in 1996 and was replaced by the ill-fated and quickly discontinued Light Magic in 1997. In 1999, Disneyland's MSEP began its Millennium Celebration run at the MK. It was sent back to Anaheim in 2001 and re-debuted as Disney's Electrical Parade at DCA summer of 2001.

Speaking of MSEP history, I just found a really interesting documentary on YouTube called "Backstage Disney: The Main Street Electrical Parade", filmed in the 80's, with plenty of footage and interviews with the creators of the parade. There's even footage of Don Dorsey playing the synthesizer! (in part 4). It's divided into 6 parts due to YouTube length restrictions, so it's a nice, long, program! Here's the links, if anyone is interested:

I really like both parades, and I think it's great that WDW and DL managed to work out this arrangement. But ultimately, I feel that it would be best for MSEP to go back to the Main Street where it began (Disneyland), and a newly refreshed SpectroMagic to go back to the Magic Kingdom where it began. I'll admit to prefering the lush orchestral score and more whimsical stylings of Spectro, though, so I might be biased. :)

Just saw MSEP on Monday, and I had to vote it as my favorite. I loved Spectro, but it was getting old for me. I couldn't stop smiling while watching MSEP the other day---the floats looked awesome, loved the music, and everyone around seemed to be clapping along and enjoying it too!
Didn't hurt that we had amazing spots on the hub with the castle as the background---got to love the second showing of the parade!

I like the idea of switching them back and forth.

As for the people who say they'd like MSEP if they changed the music... you CANNOT have MESP without Baroque Hoedown! I think you could change up many of the floats before you totally switch out the music.

SpectroMagic all the way, MSEP doesnt come close to giving me the same magical rush that Spectro does every single time.

What was the water pagent?

It's still there and plays EVERY night in Seven Seas Lagoon/Bay Lake! It's too bad it doesn't get a lot of publicity and a lot of people don't know about it. It is barges that light up in the lagoon, first as whimsical sea critters (each with their own theme song!) and then, a patriotic finale. Like MSEP, it, too, has catchy synth music that I love!

Starts every night with a show at the Poly at 9 PM, than Floridian around 9:15, then goes to Bay Lake and does a show at Wilderness Lodge and another at the Campground (not sure of exact times). It plays the Contemporary (in Bay Lake) around 10:15 ish, and when the MK is open late enough, usually does a show right outside the MK around 10:30.

I've seen it at the Poly boat dock, Contemporary boat dock, and in front the MK, and LOVE it!

I went with get rid of both and bring in something new for one reason only-

I would like to see them COMBINED into a new parade! Many of us have been going to WDW for years, and we've seen them both. And I'm not sure if anyone realizes this, but MSEP is 40 years old, and Spectro is already 20 years old. Disney needs to come up with something new to hold my attention, since I've seen these two hundreds of times, and honestly, while I like them, parade time for me has become "hurry to SM, SPLASH, BTMRR, and PotC time!" Give us regulars a reason to come back and stand along the ropes in Frontierland! Something original, or at least combine them and give us something fresh with a Legacy type feel.

That's my thoughts, anyways...

But if Disneyland takes it back, that will be YET ANOTHER thing that's better at Disneyland than WDW! (in my opinion) ;)

PS. I'm listening to that fun, upbeat, and catchy MSEP music while typing this! :) :) :)

As a DL local, I want to see Spectormagic when I go to WDW. I love MSEP, but I get to see it here fairly often. Since it is original to California, I think it will always come back here in some form.
Spectromaigc is part of WDW for me. The music, the floats, the chord where the colors all change to white . . . I love it!

That show scared the crap out of me. Me and my girlfriend were sitting on the beach after watching the magic kingdom fireworks, that music starts blasting and she screamed and fled the beach LOL. Of course seeing her do that made me think there was some alien or something coming a us LOL. I started getting creped out by the deep humming of the barges before the show so hearing the first note of that synthesized music and her screaming made me scream like a girl and embarrassed myself. I actually liked the show and was driven to make a mini version in my back yard with different images. This spring they were dismantled and will become a mini version of the lights of winter going down a christmas display I create every year. A low matenence automated laser show as of now is taking its place. The laser show is ran by timers, an old ipod and sprinklers to improve visibility, a mist screen and the trees in the woods also help. Unlike a traditional laser show this one is viewed from the back of the laser projector and there are mirrors shooting beams back. It was an hour project anyone can do with the help of Home Depot and the musiciansfriends DJ department.

I know how you feel, I want to experience a different parade when I finally get to California.
