It used to be this way, but crowds increased and the web became a popular place for everyone to hunt down how they could get THE best vacation ever. Anything that was casual had to become planned just to keep it orderly and safe. The only unplanned encounters we can have anymore are when the characters are being escorted to and from back stage, and even those routes are being stalked by fans.

Sadly you won't see these type of character and guests interactions like this anymore. Especially due to how crowded Walt Disney World has gotten in recent years. But there was a time when Disney characters were allowed to wander around the park and meet and play with guests. This was common in the 1970's, 1980's, and lasted till the late 1990's before they stuck with a character handler and show up at certain times of the day or some only becoming seasonal or at special events.

Here are examples of the days when characters we're once more interactive and spent more time with guests. Courtesy @wdwms for these two video

This footage of the Magic Kingdom circa 1972 shows Mickey Mouse walking by himself on Main Street while holding an umbrella since it was rainy that day.

Scat Cat and the gang from The Aristocats at Fantasyland sometime in the 1970's.

Tokyo Disney has the best character interactions. But unfortunately they would never work here.
I once stumbled upon a video of Marie and Scrooge interacting at Tokyo Disneysea years ago and it was so amusing to watch. Another video featured Scrooge and Berlioz playing a game by using a trash can. What ever was going on, Scrooge was getting very frustrated as a result.

If you ever come across those clips again, please post! Love Aristocats. (And became a rescuer/foster fail to an almost identical family)

That is the Disney I grew up with. And that is true character interaction.
I recall my mom sitting at a table with my baby sister while I went off to a ride with my dad and brother. When we returned to her she was white as ghost, but laughing her head off as Goofy had walked up behind her and started to make my sister laugh. My mom was still unaware he was coming up behind her until his hand was on her shoulder and she screamed, LOL.

I'd love to see the Scat Cat gang come back. Unfortunately most kids only know Marie "and her brothers" from the movie as they're all watching the more recent ones on repeat at home.

They do. Every day. Just needs to be expanded
Expanded to the US? No way, people here are animals. It doesnt work because Disney there is smart, it works because of Japanese people. I also think the character performers there are much better. Not to poopoo the CMs here but the movements and animations in Japan are very realistic. It also helps there where Donald isn't 5'8 and has lethargy.

Not expanded to WDW. Expand the roaming sets WDW already does. Without incident. Every day.

People on these pages are so freaking rude. I mean God forbid they have a high energy, colorful show that both kids and families get to really enjoy together. I am glad to hear something is coming to replace it and I’m hoping it will provide as much energy and entertainment for families. Sometimes I have to remember these pages are full or jaded “fans” who feel their nostalgia and needs outweigh everything else.

FWIW, my family really enjoyed it. Fun music, fun dancing with characters, great photo opps.. especially the roaming photo pass people. Where else can you get to dance with Phineas and Ferb and the Zootopia characters?

Also remember that half of the people who complain here, actually spend more time looking at Disney stuff on YouTube than they have at the parks. ;)

Speaking of The Aristocats, here's a promotional photo of the live show "Disney On Parade" which features the main characters which was also their first and only known appearance together. Marie didn't show up at the parks until 2005 at Tokyo and 2013 for her two brothers Toulouse and Berlioz. But this 1973 photo is the only known photo showing Duchess and Thomas.

While Disneyland nowadays only allows wandering characters (Mainly the characters from Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Beauty and the Beast) it's gotten smaller as years went bye. At least if your lucky, you might be able to ride with some of them. But that could be due to being located at a local area.
