Lack of return on the investment mostly. They don't do it for charity, they expect to gain business from it. If they don't when their contract runs out they are history.

No they don't need them to sponsor, but yes they want to profit from them and will drop an expensive attraction if they don't have a sponsor helping to foot the bills.
