By far the most depressing song on the planet:

I come and stand at every door - The Byrds (off album 5th Dimension)

Anyone else cringe and skip that song?

Not totally meaning for this to be Disney related, but I thought of "When she loved me" from Toy Story 2. Whenever I hear it on Live365 I tear up. It makes me so sad!

Every Day Is Exactly The Same - Nine Inch Nails
30,000 Feet - Assemblage 23 (lyrics at bottom the post)
Creep - Radiohead
Never Gonna Be The Same (Season Riddim) - Sean Paul
Footprints a.k.a. When You Cry (Drop Leaf Riddim) - T.O.K.

Hello, if you're there pick up the phone
I'm calling from 30,000 feet above you
The captain's just informed us that our plane is going down
So I'm calling for one last time to say I love you

I'm not certain how much time I may have left, so I'll be brief
I'm sorry if this message only amplifies your grief
But I couldn't bear the burden of never having said goodbye
And the pain you feel, I promise you, will go away with time

I'm sorry I won't be there to see our children grow
Please tell them that I loved them more than they will ever know
Tell my family and friends how much I loved them all as well
I"m sure that we will meet again, but only time will tell

I'm sorry most of all I won't be there when you grow old
To be there by your side and keep you warm when you are cold
Forgive me, but I think my time is drawing to a close
So I've one last thing to tell you now before I have to go

I...

The Saddest song I think I've ever heard in my life would have to be
Softly As I Leave You. I do agree that the Christmas Shoes song is very sad though...

Here's some others...

I'm So Lonsome I Could Cry
Solitare
Hurt
For The Heart
Fool
It's Midnight
Always On My Mind
You Don't Have To Say You Love Me
I've Lost You
I'm Leavin'
The Sound Of Your Cry
Seperate Ways
Take Good Care Of Her
Loving Arms
Thinking About You
Faded Love
Make The World Go Away
Snowbird
For The Good Times
Love Coming Down

--Elvis Presley

My Goodness. I didn't relize Elvis was such a deppressing person 'till after writing some of the songs he sang on this thread. It seems like almost every song the man sang is sad. These are just a few from the 70's!

Yeah, it's weird to get excited about depressing songs, but I love 'em. Pretty much anything by Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, The Cure, or Suzanne Vega. My all-time favorite depressing song would have to be "Downbound Train" by Springsteen.

I listened to it. Sounds sort of like an Irish folk tune. It's a bit of a dirge, no?

Most of the music I listen to is sad... nice to see that the OP listed a song by The Smiths... terminally depressed.

Lots of Smiths tunes should be on this list. I only picked my all-time favorite.

Raven's Child - John Denver
Eclipse - John Denver

"I'm Sorry" is another good John Denver tune.

Not totally meaning for this to be Disney related, but I thought of "When she loved me" from Toy Story 2. Whenever I hear it on Live365 I tear up. It makes me so sad!

I admit that I cry every time that part of the movie comes on. Sarah McLachlan can make "Happy Birthday" sound sad.

"Creep" I've heard. I think I've also heard "Every Day Is Exactly The Same." I'll have to check out those other two. Thanks!

Awesome list! Other sad Elvis tunes:"American Trilogy," "Bridge Over Troubled Water," and "In the Ghetto."

I'm glad I'm not alone in this! It's cathartic. I've never been able to get into Springsteen that much, but I'm told that his early stuff is much more depressing.

Angel -- Sarah McLachlan

What hurts the most---Rascal Flatts
Those two came to mind when I saw the thread.

I would also add:
One Moment More by Mindy Smith
There You'll Be by Faith Hill
Concrete Angel by Martina McBride
I Will Remember You by Sarah McLachlan
Without You by Dixie Chicks
