Monorail Purple Being Retired

I think I would like to see the walkthrough design similar to the one proposed for seattle at WDW. I think it's likely that the next generation of monorails will be automated and that would give people the opportunity to continue to be able to look out the front (or back).

I agree! It just seemed like an opportunity to test out a new cab design, paint and interiors. Which could lead someday to the Mark VIII or at least a Mark VI 2.0 overhaul.

True...But hopefully we just new trains, honestly, it's time. Or at least refurb our trains. They look a little worn.

A walk-through design like Hitachi has with their monorails would really be a major improvement not just for design but safety. Bombardier has a walk through design (see below) BUT to make this work a entirely new drive motor/wheel truck design would have to be made and maybe make the cars wider and/or taller.

Wider and/or taller would be a huge problem for Disney as every station would have to be modified (Don't see this happening) and the Contemporary 6th floor overhanging the station is really tight with the current trains.

If they could make it work within the current confines Oh Yeah that would be cool.

The current trains could use a little sprucing up, for certain, but I LOVE the design. It is so timeless and beautiful.

The walkthrough design that Bombardier proposed for Seattle was a MVI monorail with of course specifications almost identical to WDW Mark VI

The image I have is from that Seattle proposal and is all I have to go by. Looking at the photo and counting the windows assuming a single double door vs windows on the Las Vegas M-VI trains I would guess longer.
picture.php

Counting the bulk head seats I get 4 seats plus the walk-thru aisle or equal to about 6 seats which would be wider than the 5 seats on the current Mark VI.
picture.php

Between cars they currently have two very large tires and two motors one on each side of the train. Maybe they could mount them above the tires. I don't know but something has to go to make room.

I'm still guessing a bigger design. If you have a plans, photos or official specifications I would be very interested.

Tokyo Disneyland Monorails have walk-thru and they are automated but have a conductor (?) as backup.

Here's a real walk-thru monorail.

And really big trains, too. Each train carries 571 passengers! And these are Hitachi's Medium size monorails!

Oh and yes, I know they must have been hit with the Ugly Stick now if only Bombardier and Hitachi could get together.

I'm sorry but the handrails need to spin when the doors open. If that doesn't happen I won't sign off on the change.

I wouldn't expect the Mark VIII's to look THAT much different.. The look of the original Mark IV's was approved by Walt himself in the mid-60's .. They the Mark VI look was pulled straight from that ...

Changing the look DRASTICALLY different would break the 'tradition' of keeping them in step with his original vision.. Thats something that rails would not like very much..

Absolutely not. The trains were designed to operate for at least 20 years. I have a hard time believing that Bombardier announced they would be for 10 years.
The oldest train on the system is not even 20 years old yet. That may seem old, if we are talking about common vehicles but all transportation vehicles must last longer than 10 years, for obvious reasons. Heck, NYC got rid of some subway cars dating from the 70s just a few years ago.
As long as they are running well, they should not be replaced for another 5-8 years.

We still got ones from the 60s running around, the R32s on the (C) train. If its built solid, and maintained well, it can still go for a long time.

I really do not think the average park guest will even notice that monorail purple is no longer in service. Or the fact that there are 11 monorails with a different stripe. And honestly I do not think Disney cares what the now deceased employee would want.

Watch the front cab home video and insert a "oh yeah, there used to be a purple, but someone got killed in the big smash up of 2009." at the end of Austins spiel. I think you miss my point.

I've never seen anything pointing to Walt approving the Mark IV Learjet style design, All of the sketches and conceptual artwork from before Walt's death show a Mark I-III style for WDW. The timeline doesn't quite look that way either Bob Gurr says that he borrowed the Learjet styling a few years after seeing one at an airport, and the first Learjets came out right around the time of Walt's death. I would be curious to know if Walt ever got to see a drawing of the Learjet type monorail.

Your probably right, but things evolve like Mark III influenced the Mark VII at Disneyland and everyone loves them. Certain salutes to the old design should be kept but advancing the concept in more modern design and materials.

To most people the Mark IV is the same as the Mark VI except for the doors.
picture.php

As you can see the size of the Mark VI is quite a bit bigger where today most people can stand up and travel standing vs sitting. The trains were a huge leap in advanced materials and technologically advanced over the Mark IV's.

Even today the Mark VI's are updated with newer technology, here is the 1990 control panel.

Today's control panel is touch controlled and many times more powerful

I would think the rebuild for Monorail Purple (or new color) should be a prototype for a Mark VI make over.

And just have one "new" Mono? That would a bit odd...
