we caught a 4:30 show at our theater. it’s ok. 1st 1 was better. my wife & i both agreed the songs pretty much sucked for the most part. still get a kick out of the coconut guys 😂. despite what i said about the songs it’s not a bad movie.

You know what? I don't care if it reached the $1 billion or not, if Moana 2 just past the like $500 million or something at the box office, then WDAS will be officially saved. I hope. 🥺

I actually think it did, if only a little. It (and the related fast, cheap theme park attractions) took a generational cultural phenomenon and turned it into Another Disney Musical. We'll see if this is true, or if it matters, when Frozen 3 comes out.
I think it has more to do with people realizing the original Frozen was just okay and not the greatest thing ever.

I wish I could be more excited for this. I’m going to go see it but I don’t like what I have heard about the music so far.

I guess I’m expecting like a 7/10 but I was hoping for more since it’s Moana.

It’s going to make a ton of $$$, but I hope the message Disney receives isn’t that a 7/10 is good enough to print money.

I thought it was a good follow-up to the first film, obviously not surpassing it but a good entry into the Moana story. Visuals were great, there is no question this was animated specifically for the big screen and not reused from a show. Songs were ok, some were catchy, others were just filler, but overall my theater (which was full) was enjoying all the songs.

I would be surprised if this doesn't end up being the movie everyone goes to see between now and the end of the year. It'll end up top 5 if not within the top 3 for the year.

we were surprised how well that movie did when it came out. we watched it the night before it & there were only 8 people, us included, in the theater. we also thought it was mediocre & it would flop. a billion dollars later, we were very wrong.

I didn't hate the movie or anything but I remember how marketing called it "The best since The Lion King" and it wasn't anywhere near as great as the '90s films, especially not The Lion King or Beauty and the Beast. I mostly thought that the songs were okay, a little bit too pop in my opinion compared to the more traditional style of Menken (has anyone noticed how some of the songs just abruptly ended?), but I thought it was weird how the first 30 minutes were a musical and then the rest of the movie only had two awkward songs, one of which was sung while the main character was literally dying.

I honestly don't know why you think that. Moana is literally one of the most streamed movies and it constantly trended in the top 10 on Disney+ ever since the service was released in 2019.
What else is there to watch on Disney+? How many times can anyone watch Moana unless you are under 5.

Except people really wanted to see Frozen 2. They even made jokes about when it would come out in Ralph Breaks the Internet. There is no pent up energy for Moana 2.
Yeah totally disagree on this. Moana is still the most watched every year. And you can say "What else is there to watch." Well, there's Frozen. There is almost every other movie that has come out by Disney. It's the top, that's not nothing. It might be 5 and under watching it non-stop, but that doesn't mean every parent isn't ready to take their 5 year old to see the movie right away.

Honestly, I'm surprised at how many people are caring in the least what critics say at this point. They almost never care about the same things a general audience does anymore. The true test is when the audience scores start coming up.

The Rotten Tomatoes score at the moment is 67% critics, 89% audiences. Poking around social media, there's a fair split with audience responses -- some people love it, a goodly deal think it's fine but not as good as the first (which is in line with a lot of the professional notices), and a lot find it a major letdown, especially regarding the songs. Given this first wave of viewers clearly consists of superfans it will be interesting to see how this affects word-of-mouth down the line and how well it holds from week to week.

There's also some debate regarding the ending...

If it can be called that because there's clearly meant to be a third film. At the end of this one, the wayfinder island is restored, but Nalo does not directly confront our heroes at any point. The mid-credits scene reveals he is still out there and is determined to destroy Moana, who is now a demigoddess alongside Maui due to events in the climax.

What makes you say that? It started playing in my local cinema on Tuesday, and there’s nothing to stop “ordinary” viewers—families with kids, etc.—from seeing it.
I will say historically, it's usually the much larger level fans that would go on a Tuesday/Wednesday night to see the "Previews". Most of the people who work/have kids with school/sports/etc. will wait more for the weekend unless they are just that excited for it. No, nothing stops people from going on a Tuesday, but it takes a lot more commitment to find that time.
