Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

Fair enough. I suppose I thought that a good number of children would be among those excited enough to pester their parents into seeing it early, but I don’t know how these things typically work.

They very well could be, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a parent who wasn't excited to take their kids if their kid is that into the movie as well. I mean, I expect early audience reviews to be higher than they end up, but I don't think it's a 20 point swing either.

I will say historically, it's usually the much larger level fans that would go on a Tuesday/Wednesday night to see the "Previews". Most of the people who work/have kids with school/sports/etc. will wait more for the weekend unless they are just that excited for it. No, nothing stops people from going on a Tuesday, but it takes a lot more commitment to find that time.

Most kids in the US are out this week due to the Thanksgiving holiday here. Also those with parents that work will wait until the evening showings, for example my 7:45P showing last night was packed full of families with kids. I would say the average age was under 25.

I will not post spoilers, but this movie was not great. I wanted to love it, but it truly lacked a purpose to be made other than money. There was no real story here and the songs were pretty forgettable. Just a big meh from our family. It borrowed the same plot beats as the first movie, yet was an all around downgrade from the first movie. Like it was not horrible but you can easily see how it started out, and should have stayed, a D+ series.

Back up to 67% as of 4pm PST, but more importantly has held in the high 80% for the audience.

I've found that the RT score has been less an indicator of anything predictive and more just talking points looking in hindsight.

Critics look for things and have standards other than the general audience. Both scores are informative.

I think the Cinemascore will be most revealing of how audiences feel about the movie. Only the most passionate of fans or haters post a review on Rotten Tomatoes.

I'll get around to seeing Moana 2, but with the middling reviews I might wait for crowds to die down and just rewatch Wicked this weekend.

I think the disappointment stems from the first movie being largely viewed as "great" and people wishing it was of a similar quality. We shouldn't settle for "it was okay" or "it wasn't that bad!"

I suspect had Musker and Clements and Lin Manuel Miranda been involved, we'd be having a very different conversation about the sequel.

Except people really wanted to see Frozen 2. They even made jokes about when it would come out in Ralph Breaks the Internet. There is no pent up energy for Moana 2.

This has already aged incredibly poorly. Five day thanksgiving projections are now smashing the prior record holder from Dis (Frozen 2).

There’s nothing left to cling to that this film is going to perform under expectations.

Just got back from Moana 2. No it wasn’t as good as the original. Yea it missed LMM. But it was a fun ride, and exactly the type of movie Disney Animation should be delivering….even though it didn’t live up to the lofty levels of Moana. Glad it’s killing at the box office and hopefully TWDC learns a lesson here.

Which is why I’m hoping one lesson Disney learns is to not rush Tiana out if they turn it from a Disney+ series into a theatrical sequel to The Princess and The Frog for movie theaters and that they delay it to Thanksgiving 2029.
