Top 'o 3rd and the Red Sox are hammering the Yankees 6-0 in game 2 of the season.

So let me get this straight: The NY Yankees & their enormously high payroll have been rolled over 14 runs to 2 in only 12 innings of baseball this year?:eek:

The Arizona Diamondbacks edged by the St. Louis Cardinals 10-9 in a 16 inning ballgame last night. The game lasted 5 & a half hrs in Arizona, as the score was tied 9-9 until the bottom of the 16th when the D-Backs went ahead for the win.

In that much time, I could be halfway to WDW from my driveway.

Not quite as long as the 17 innings that the Orioles and Red Sox played last year. Even though it was an incredible game that my birds ultimately won, it was too long and any game over 11 innings becomes really exhausting for the players. Especially catchers. I would not wish it on any team.

I thought last year was the SF Giant's year?
When you have a team with 14 straight losing seasons, making it to the playoffs IS their year.

And then the Ravens won the Super Bowl. So there is a joy in the air that is not going away any time soon.

Not to mention that we still have purple Fridays, even though football season was over almost two months ago.

So we opened up on Friday at Camden yards! It was great! (except for me getting sick halfway through the game, but other than that, it was great!)

We got there way early, so we walked around the inner harbor for a while. We so rarely do that, but it's actually quite nice down there.

Then we went to Dempsy's Brew Pub and Grille. Anyone visiting Baltimore any time soon? Or any time? It's a really good sit down place near the yard if you're over that way. Open year round.

Then for the opening ceremonies. 2012 was a big year in Baltimore. First, we remembered Michael Phelps. Some cheering and clapping. Then we remembered the Orioles. Even more cheering. Then we remembered the Ravens. That was when we erupted into cheering and our Baltimore cheer, which if you didn't already know, goes like this:

You get the picture. Just over and over and over and over...

Then the team and crew were introduced (the exciting part!) with fireworks and some flames and an orange carpet. Adam Jones and Manny Machado (my boy) of course, received the loudest cheers. Anyway, it was sort of sad because earlier this year, (actually, the day of Orioles fanfest) we lost former beloved manager Earl Weaver. There was not opening pitch in his memory. The ball simply sat on the mound.

Oh, you want to know about the game? Well, unlike the two insanely dumb twenty something year olds in front of me who were more interested in texting and laughing at each other the entire time, I paid attention to the game. It was the bottom of the eighth inning. We were losing 5-4. Then suddenly, we weren't. We had runners on first and third, and they chose to intentionally walk nick Markakis, our right fielder. Bad idea, as we had Adam Jones and Chris Davis up next. Both are power hitters. Jones gets a single, the score is now 5-5. Then comes Chris Davis. In all three games before this, Davis had hit a home run. No joke. So my dad says, "Well, it's time for a Chris Davis home run." Next pitch, we watch that ball as it goes...and goes...and goes...and goes... and it's gone! A grand slam!!! (and queue the cheer. Again) We won 9-5! It was a great game and even though I was running a fever during most of it (what I got home and discovered to be a 102 degree fever) I was happy to have seen the grand slam.

Anyone else make it to opening day at their ballparks and care to share their stories?

--- Week 1 Recap ---

Things I learned after week 1 of the 2013 season:
(Yes... I'm stealing this idea from @PUSH in the NFL thread).

-The Upton brothers are going to be a MAJOR threat offensively, and help the Braves go far this season.
-Toronto's big spending & acquisitions during the offseason are not exactly paying them back in return (do I smell another Miami Marlins' fiasco from 2012?)
-The same can be said for the LA Angels...certainly not living up to their talented Pujols-Hamilton-ified lineup.
-The AL East is seeing Red (sox)! It appears the Bobby Valentine horror affair is certainly ancient history.
-The Houston Astros may have looked impressive during last Sunday's opening game...but needless to say, they are in serious trouble.
-Despite CC Sabathia's scoreless start today, the 2-4 NY Yankees are in dire need of getting many of their star players healthy & back on the field.
-The 5-1 Arizona DBacks & Colorado Rockies may be riding atop the NL West after week 1...but that will not last too long. Too much talent hidden in SanFran & Los Angeles which has yet to blossom this season.

Best surprise breakout teams this week: Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Oakland A's, Arizona DBacks, and Colorado Rockies.
Most shocking disappointments this week: LA Angels, NY Yankees, and Toronto Blue Jays.

It's only the first week. The first week often doesn't spell out how the rest of the season will be.

But the Yankees may continue to play this way.:D
