I agree. I prefer to read stories, poems, etc. for what they are, not what they could be.

Poems are the epitome of symbolism. That's what a poem is. Symbolism.

You should never read Shakespeare in literal terms.

So, you'd rather stay in the dark about the cancer and just hope it goes away?

If I were more suseptable to a certain illness, I would make sure I got checked regularly. To not do so would be ridiculous.

And symbols are not made up.
Yes they are.
If no one made them, where did they come from? :lookaroun :veryconfu :lookaroun

I highly doubt the Aslan resurrection scene mirrors that of Jesus Christ's so perfectly on accident.
Well... why not?
Stranger things have happened. :lookaroun

That's not what I meant.

That's true, but such a parallel coming from a devout Christian writer who wrote numerous texts on Christianity...

I don't think it was mere coincidence.

Not necessarily.
Most rely heavily on imagery, more-so than symbolism.
Although the two are very similar.

I'm just throwing the option out there.
It's not fair to automatically assume something without looking at other possibilities.

When he mentioned poems, it made me think of two things: Shakespeare's sonnets and Emily Dickinson.

Neither of which I am a fan of and neither of which I suggest reading under a literal eye.

I'm staying out of this debate, but I'm enjoying it immensely!

That's true.

But I think this one was actually intentional. But my name isn't Clive Staples Lewis.

...

Or is it? :drevil:
