I'll be the first to admit that LOTR is not an easy read. I failed on my first attempt. I did not get past the introduction, it read too much like a school history text book.Pongo said:Yeah, I just never got into Tolkien. Call me crazy.

On the second attempt I skipped the introduction and went straight for the story and found that a lot easier. Though having the whole thing in one large edition made it too heavy to read in bed.
I've since read it a couple more times, but in three individual paperbacks.
The extended cuts are much better than the theatrical versions. They fill in a lot of holes and expand the characters.Pongo said:I saw the first movie and thought it was pretty good, so (not making a wise dcision), I attempted The Two Towers. To no avail.
I'm not really much a fan of the books or movies. *shrug*

My GF had only seen The Two Towers at the cinema and hated it. But she decided to sit through the extended DVDs, and much to her surprise found that she really enjoyed them.
