More than half (56 percent) of young drivers use cell phones while driving,
69 percent said that they speed to keep up with traffic
64 percent said they speed to go through a yellow light.
47 percent said that passengers sometimes distract them.
Nearly half said they believed that most crashes involving teens result from drunk driving.
Just to clarify:
- Everyone uses a cell phone while driving. I do it too. I also change CDs while driving, which is even more dangerous. I've taken shoes off while driving and done other things too. Teens aren't the only ones that do it. The one thing CAN'T do at the same time as driving, though: eat. That's a challenge right there.
- Again, everyone speeds to keep up with traffic. In some places it's actually illegal NOT to speed to keep up with traffic. You can get pulled over for going too slow. It's not just teens that do this. It's not the speedy ones that get annoying. It's the slow ones that force you to tailgate, or the ones that tailgate you.
- Again, who doesn't seize the opportunity to go through a yellow light when you know you can make it? I know I did it a few times last night and here I am. People aren't going to go blindly into an intersection when the light turns green if there's a car in front of them still crossing. It can be annoying if the person judged the light for longer than it really was, but otherwise, who cares?
- Passengers can be distracting, but that's NOT ONLY TEENS (do you get my theme here?) And I don't often ride with passengers, so I don't deal with that much.
- And most crashes involving teens ARE from drunk driving, probably. Half of all crashes PERIOD probably are. But that's not something you can glean over the entire teen population. You know as well as I know that I don't drink.
Like I said. Smart vs. Stupid. It's not a matter of one or two years.
