Mission: Space...was it hyped?

Really? Does anyone know what kind of overhaul Horizons would have got?

Yep. Discussed ad nauseum. Try a thread search for space pavilion and Journeys in Space.

Or just watch Martin's fantastic tribute. :D ;)

Just to skim the surface, it would have had a MMU/Jet pack ride, HUGE Omnimax windows, and like Mr. Soto mentioned, there was at one point ride cars on a track. All would have been awesome.

Though, I must say, the M:S we have now is pretty freaking cool, too.:D:cool:

Wow. Thanks for that! I searched it up and found out some cool stuff, but it would have taken me a year to find out all that stuff.

I do wish there was a way to bring Horizons back in some updated, cool, non sucky compacity.

In regards to M:S, my great uncle(Some guy that was played by Tom Hanks in a movie, and no, it was NOT Forrest Gump!) said something to the effect of "This is the closest that an average joe can come to going up, without having to spend extended time in zero G's or having to ________ in a vinyl bag that you have to stick onto your butt:eek:"...

For what it's worth...

Oh yeah, he was one of the guest speakers at the grand opening, and it was pretty hyped back then...

Your great uncle is Jim Lovell? That's really cool!

M:S is a worthier successor to Mission to Mars than it is to Horizons, but I will say that the "Orange" experience realistically demonstrates that space travel in the real world is hard on the human body. It's not like Star Trek.

You know, I wouldn't even care if it wasn't a remake or New Horizons, or Horizons 2 (even though that could be cool) but something based on the Horizons idea should come back to future world in some way.

I can't believe there hasn't been at least an idea or pitch from WDI for something like that in FW.

The redo of SSE is as close to Horizons 2.0 that we will see.

Horizons was way more than 'choose your ending.' It was about how friggin cool the future was going to be! SSE does a good job of showing us the past (and a little of the present) but where the heck is the FUTURE in FUTURE WORLD? No, the faux-Jetsons cartoon at the end of SSE doesn't count.

Horizons also had, IMO, the best and most extensive set pieces. (Though JII and WOM had some incredible scenes too.) SSE has some nice ones, but they're much smaller in size and more intimate.

As long as Future World retains its name, there will always be a place for a Horizons -- or at least something else comes along and shows us what the world will be like years and years from now.

There might be a place for it but I do not see it happening. They are expensive to build, even more expensive to maintain and simply not what your average guest wants to see. The average guest wants thrill rides. Just be glad that the roller coaster idea for SSE would not work. Had it been feasible I fear that SSE as we know it would be gone as well.

Maybe Eddie can share something here?

If the average guest only wanted thrill rides, then the Magic Kingdom would only have lines at the 'Mountains and Mission Space would have more than a 5 minute wait. The thrill rides of course do have the longest waits in general, but a lot of that has to do with the lower guest capacity and slower loading/unloading processes.

The reality is, most Disney guests want to experience something uniquely Disney. Can that be in the form of a thrill ride? Of course. But they can just as easily have a unique experience in another form altogether. And who's to say a new Horizons couldn't have an element of thrill to it? For its time, the original Horizons ending was pretty exciting and was a precursor to simulator rides like Star Tours and Body Wars.

If the longevity of Pirates and Haunted Mansion has proven anything, it's that an immersive experience can be just as effective as being spun around, dropped from great heights, and going upside down. And for the number crunchers at Disney, it also creates more opportunities for mega-successful entertainment franchises too! :)

And for what it's worth, seeing how this is the Mission Space thread, I finally got a chance to go on it last month (I've been in Cali for the past decade) and thought it was OK. IMO it should have just been a short-lived Innoventions attraction though and not housed in its own building. Thought it was neat, but it was really just Gravitron with better theming.

I was going to write SSE redo was as close as we would get to another Horizons in my post, but I wanted to leave just a little hope

You know, I would have been cool if they added more stuff into SSE about the future (like dweezil78 pointed out) but I don't see them doing it. That would take a big redo of SSE.

Its hard for me to think that the next big attraction for FW wont at least be based on the future and be deeply immersive. It's called Future World! I don't care if they add a big drop at the end or shoot you out around the building at 70 mph. They're seriously lacking something in FW and Horizons left a huge hole that hasnt been filled. TT and Space ain't it.

I never said it was the only thing they want but it is what is going to bring you average theme park guest into a park. One needs only to ride up I-4 to realize this. How many billboards do you see for non thrill attractions? Three maybe four. Bottom line is if Horizons was well attended by guests it would still be there. The reality is that towards the end of its run it was not. Eddie Sotto even confirmed this in this forum.

To be fair, Epcot as a whole was considered boring back then. It wasn't a single attraction. Not by a long shot. And Horizons and WOM were casualties of that, imo, along with lack of sponsership.

Yet, all the opportunity for thrill rides for WS was never even attempted.

Again, I don't think Horizons would have survived the way it was, but I think a revamp could have been promising.
