Mission: Space - to do or not to do

I would absolutely do it. I do the orange side all the time, and I can't imagine how it could be a more immersive and realistic experience.

As someone who wanted to be an astronaut as a kid, this attraction was one of the coolest I've ever been on.

When we went we rode the green version, I don't wanna put people off but I felt ill after riding the green version, this is only b/c I get bad travel sickness and even other motion simulator rides like star tours I can come off and feel ill. I'm sure that most people ride both versions and feel fine. The only reason why you tend to hear about people gettin seriously ill and having to go to hospital and stuff is mainly b/c often the media tend to hype the story up a bit, or at least thats what they tend to do over hear in the UK. There will have been thousands of people who have been on it and been fine. It's mainly up to how you personally feel about it. You'll never know untill you do it if you like it or not.

Naturaly, it's different for all people. However.....

1) It's not that fast/bad. I think most of the problems people have are because it's an enclosed space, and unless you are looking at the screen, you have no visual queues to go with the various forces you are feeling.

2) Many people advocate making sure you look straight ahead and keep your eyes open or else you will feel dizzy/ill. That does seem to be the case for some people. My kids and I spend most of the time looking toward the side. We reach over and mess with each others "controls" during the flight and talk to each other.

3) As for kids riding. My now 8 year old had been riding MS since before there was a Green and Orange - back when it was all orange. I guess she was 5 or so when she first rode (that would have made her sister 7). On her first time riding, we waited on line, got through the pre-flight breifing, and were waiting outside the capsules for load when she announced "I have to ______". Well it was too late to back out. So to put it in perspective, a 5 year old girl survived her first time ever on the full motion simulator with a full bladder with no ill effects :)

I think a lot of the problems people have with it is they hype themselves up about how "bad" its going to be

My advice for you - do the green side first, if you are not bothered by the closed in ride booth, then go orange.

I love thrill rides, but I didn't like this one. I started to panic once they closed the doors on the ride. I really considered getting out of line several times when they repeatedly said you will be in a tight position, but I decided to try it anyway.

The take off was amazing, but I felt naucious and dizzy afterwords.

I was there for the M:S Passholder preview in Fall 2003. My group of 4 rode it approx. 12-15 times that day and we felt just fine. Since, my blood pressure has risen (stupid desk job) but I still feel perfectly safe on that ride. If you are accustomed to thrill rides this ride is no different that most motion sims.

As for the child... Let her ride it if she wants to. An 8 y.o. will be perfectly fine on it 99.99% of the time. (Just made that up, but kids ride it everyday with no incidents) If she is scared, pass it up. Don't try to talk her into it just to get the money's worth or to see if she likes it. That's just mean and irresponsible...

One more thing... tons of people get off Orange saying, "That was it? I thought it would be worse than that."

People hype it up to be worse than it is. It's really not all that intense, you only feel the gravity in 3 spots and you don't really feel the "spinning," you just feel the gravity effect. It's not like the teacups or anything like that. It's just about personal taste. I like orange, but green is just as good and as a lot of people have said, wait times often influence which side to ride.

The ride is not as intense as it was when it first opened. after the first death they turned it back a smidge, the second death a smidge more. It seems to have cured to problem I guess. This is what I heard from a cast member in 2007 when I was there. If anyone has heard any different let me know.

I do think it is not as intense as it was though, I rode it like 2 weeks after it opened and it HURT, very intense, once a day experience..... but the last couple of times I rode it I noticed it was not as intense, I never said anything about it but the people we were with brought it up after the ride confirming my suspision.. anyone else care to weigh in?

I have been on Orange three times, on two trips. I'm about done with that.

I love roller coasters, Rock 'n Roller, no problem. I just do not find M:S
to be pleasant, fun, or anything like that. I really don't like it. But I
do not like spinny rides at all, I'm sure that's it.

I am going to try green next time and see if I enjoy it.

This is the only ride in all of WDW that I don't really enjoy, sadly.:(

I have ridden this twice and only got a headache once. We were also told it was a bad idea to eat before ridding the orange mission.

On the other hand, it's not good to ride on an empty stomache, either, or as other posters have said, when you are overheated or dehydrated.

Just trying to decide whether to do Mission: Space on my next trip. ...
thanks

Most young kids do fine, because their balance system is working well. I'm an old fart now, and I can no longer do tilt-a-whirl, which was a favorite when I was a kid.

My two girls (15 and 11 now) my wife and I have ridden Orange maybe half a dozen times now. One time my wife, who is a bit younger, felt a little weak-knee'd afterward; the other times virtually no problems. I was a little sick afterwards the first time, because I let myself get all worked up just before riding, and hadn't eaten for a while, and I had a kind of an acid stomach before I even got on. I also don't like tight enclosed spaces, and I'm a bit overweight now, which makes it a bit worse. But nothing a margarita after riding couldn't fix.

Every time I've riden, I've been mildly unconfortable in a different way each time, but not too bad.

The kids have never been affected that way at all. This is one of their favorite rides! Me, too! In spite of the fact that I have a bit of discomfort, I love riding with my family so much that I put up with it. We always try to fool around with the controls and make jokes, and when we're done, we come out giggling. I tried to keep my head perfectly still and looking straight forward the first time, and I got spasms in my neck from being so tense, and my eye muscles hurt from straining to look forward. Relaxing works better for me. I just don't go spinning my head around wildly.

Advice: (1) Ask your doctor about riding with low blood pressure. It's probably OK, but only your personal physician can give you the correct advice.

(2) Don't ride on an empty stomach, but don't eat right before riding either.

(3) Make sure you stay hydrated and cool off a bit before riding, but don't drink a ton of water just before.

(4) I like to suck on a small cough drop just before the ride - I like Riccola sugar free - it seems to keep my tummy calm. Hard candy would work, too. If that sort of thing helps you - everyone is different.

(5) if you can't ride tilt-a-whirl, then take more precautions (like above) but don't give up the idea of riding all together. Ditto Star Tours. But the feeling is different from other motion simulators. I can't ride tilt-a-whirl at all anymore, or the tea cups. I have no problem with Star Tours. M:S is somewhere in the middle, but definitely worth it for me.

You won't know until you try! You can always not go back!

I have to admit that I had a bit of the light headed experience myself on the orange a couple of years ago.....

I rode the more intense version twice. Only felt disoriented after the second trip, and I have high blood pressure. It was a real rush to feel the pressure of lift-off.

If you can stand the spinning the first time, go ahead and try it. Then feel free to switch to the less intense experience. You'll have a great time.

Well, most people say start with the green and go up. I personally have never rode the green version but the orange version was very......alright. You might feel a bit dizzy afterwords and maybe have a time trying to stand up, but I personally enjoyed it. But I don't think I'd do it twice in a row.

Meh. I've been on Mission Space (The REAL side) on everything from an overly full stomach after a huge meal at Outback Steakhouse, to one day riding eight times back to back without stopping and never felt ill...and I'm like the least healthy person ever.

We have been on both versions of the ride with no ill effect.

Seriously though, I was not all that impressed with it. I think if you are concerned about the ride harming you ride the easy version. You will get a decent idea of what the ride is like. If that peeks your interest enough, go back and ride the difficult version.

Do not do it...

Thats my personal opinion..this is one of the FEW things about the world that I do not like at all...I think it is a pointless ride and would prefer to ride It's a Small World fifty times in a row and then Stitch 50 times in a row before I would ride Mission Space...:)

Like I said..My opinion...:)

I would say that you feel pretty strongly about this then.

Just trying to decide whether to do Mission: Space on my next trip. I've only been on it twice and that was several years ago because everyone I've been to WDW with in the last few years has been too scared to go on it because they think they will die and don't feel it's worth it to do "Mission: Space - lite" so you don't get the full effect of the ride.

Here's some things to consider. The two times I have been on the ride I felt quite light headed afterward and had to take a break before continuing on around the park...I chalked that up to my low blood pressure. Not a huge deal but it was a little bit before I felt like going on another ride.

My sister is a bit nervous taking my neice (8) on the ride because even though she hasn't had any health problems she has heard about a child dying due to an undiscovered medical condition and figures that would be a crappy way to find out.

I wouldn't mind trying the "green" version but if you don't get any of the same effects at lift off or the feeling of weightlessness then it doesn't seem like much fun.

I'd like to know what you guys think and if anyone has done the "green" version and enjoyed it let me know

thanks

If I did the green version it would have been really boring to me. Orange definitely made me feel a little sick after but then again I ate breakfast like 30 minutes prior to going on it lol. My girlfriend felt sick for a couple hours after. Honestly I'd say go Orange or just do something else. :)

I've never been on the non-spinning green version, never will, (Go Big or Go home), but the orange version is amazing. Very unique, very intense! Cerntainly a signature WDW attraction.

And for those of you who claim Horizons was a better attraction. Give me a break! I liked Horizons. But if it had been the other way around and they had taken out Mission Space and added Horizons, there would have been an outcry beyond belief! Sometimes nostalgia warps people's minds.

Best way to describe it/comepare it.

Green version is this
StarTours.jpg

Mixed with the smoothness of motion of this

soarin.jpg

... Now the orange version is that but with this added.

(This is for everyone who isn't too sure reading this post).

My advice is go for the Green. It's really very similar but with a few different sensations. For example when landing on Mars your simulator tips forward while spinning giving you the sensation of a large gravity pull downwards into your seat so you get sucked back. With out the spin you actually get pulled forward.
