Might not see new attractions until 2018-20? Wall Street wants to scale back park investment?

OK, but I don't get the inconsistency where they are investing in DLR even tough that resort is doing well financially as well. I guess the answer might be "they aren't going to be investing there" but the rumors about Star Wars in DL and Monstropolis in DCA seem pretty strong.

Because they truly have capacity issues. To keep growing the $$$ base, they need more spaces to fill with attractions. They see major growth in DL and the investment will cause that. In FL, they see a mature property without much of any growth, so they want to squeeze every cent out of the property.

It could be something minor, but I doubt Iger would hint at something like a new parade at the earnings call. I think he may be talking about larger investments but I don't know for sure.

From the @ocregister yesterday: Going to continue to invest in Disneyland. Will be "couple of exciting things we'll be announcing in the next couple of months," Iger said.
In context he was talking about future investments at WDW (7dmt and Avland), then quickly mentioned Disneyland before moving on to another question on MyMagic+. To me it was more along the lines that because they have not announced any investments in DL and no rides are being built in DL, opposed to WDW, he wanted to make sure the investors did not think they would not invest in DL in the near future.

That was my read on it as well. I really don't think he was suggesting nothing is coming to WDW. Just that there is forthcoming news for DL. WDW already has large projects in the works that have been announced.

And Florida doesn't? Both resorts have capacity problems that they will ultimately have to address.
No, WDW has no capacity issues. When it gets crowded, they can just open up grassy areas and backstage walkways to offer us breathing space. Who needs new rides when you can just go here in the MK?

That's all I needed to know.
Curious...

Again, want to make clear.

What large projects are in the works that have been announced? (Rides...not shops and hotels)
1. CarsLand hasn't been announced
2. Star Wars hasn't been announced
3. Avatar was announced in Sept. 2011 and said it would begin building in 2013. We are almost at the end of 2013.
New Fantasyland was announced in 2009 and will be completed in 2014. If Avatar is started in 2013...it won't be completely finished until 2020.

I was referring to Avatarland, Disney Springs, and one (soon to be two) new timeshare properties. We may not LIKE what WDW is spending on at WDW, but they are spending. Why can't we just be excited about frying pans in bathrooms and new signage?

The flowers in the first pick remind me of rain...the sound of rain dripping on pots and pans make me want to take a pee...ohhh look and bathroom. Sweet!

In Iger's email to CM's about 3Q results, it was all about Media Networks with a small paragraph about Parks and Resorts.

In Parks and Resorts, our recent investments in our domestic parks continue to pay off. With the transformation of Disney California Adventure complete, including Cars Land and the historic expansion of Fantasyland at Walt Disney World, both the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World set new Q3 attendance records.

I'm sure Iger would view FLE as historic. It will be all we will remember him for in 20 years.

Here is the bottom line as I see it. Disney can be working on expanding Fantasy Land, building Avatar, rebuilding Downtown Disney, working on plans for other attractions at Walt Disney World and the I love Universal more people will continue to say Disney is doing nothing. I for one think Disney is doing so much right now; but I look at not only Walt Disney World but at what all that Disney Parks as a whole as to offer. Disneyland Resort is greatly improved (planning trip there in 2014), the two new cruise ships are unbelievable (just got back from a cruise), and a new park is being built in Shanghai (plan on being there opening day). I do think that Universal did a one up on Disney with Harry Potter and will again make a splash with Harry Potter II, but Disney and Walt Disney World still improve with every trip there. So I am getting a little tired of every posting on this web site is turning into a marketing tool for Universal.
The reason that we aren't looking at the rest of what Disney, as a company, is doing is because, we are talking about WDW in this thread. All the rest of the worldwide investment has zero impact on me. They could build 100 cruise ships, have 50 more parks spring up in Shanghai it will have no effect on me. I am not going to Shanghai nor am I taking a cruise in the foreseeable future.

I do not know why Disney is refusing to invest more in the parks. It may be because they are A) broke, B) being pressured by Wall Street to curb spending, C) do not accept that Universal is moving swiftly ahead, if not in numbers, but in positive feed back or D) they have their heads so far up their butts that they have to brush their teeth through their navels. Whatever, the reason nothing is being done, of substance, to improve, enliven or stay cutting edge in the theme park business. The shear lack of acceptance or ability to prepare and anticipate the future just to make today look good, is mind boggling to me. To me it's like taking a boat out into the ocean and waiting until you are out of sight of the shore to decide that you need to put gas in the tank. It's a long row back.

It's true, the past few years they seem to be letting WDW just rest on its laurels and pull the money in. And increasingly marketing to families with small children and especially little girls who want to dress up in princess costumes. Which it's fine to market to those people, but Disney used to be something for everybody, all ages and genders. At least among the people I talk to at work and so on, it's increasingly getting the reputation of "only people with children under 10 go there". I would really hate and be saddened if Disney cedes all of the adult/over 10/wants something mildly thrilling/see the latest movie attractions demographics to Universal.

I agree with this, it does feel like Disney is hitting the family of kids 10 and under. They are going to Magic Kingdom, enjoy themselves but can't see everything at the park...so they come back in a few years.
Not sure how many first time families are out there but maybe Disney doesn't have to build new rides to have people flock in.

When you get to our age and you've seen it all. It's hard to go back and pay so much money when nothing new is on the table.
I will be taking my kids to a Disney Park in 2016-17 but I'm not sure it's going to be Orlando. I live in Texas, doesn't matter if I go left or right in the plane. Disney Land is looking more attractive and I've never been to California Adventure. It gives me something new to explore. It has the Mermaid ride...and RSR will trump Mine Train. By 2017 maybe DisneyLand has some Star Wars stuff. So both my kids and I can see new and exciting stuff. Orlando will have a new Downtown Disney but...who cares???? I'll go back to Disney World in 2022 and maybe then they will have some new stuff.

At this point, I don't see why anyone is surprised that WDW won't have anything new (outside of Snow White's coaster) until at least 2017. I mean, seriously! At the pace they go, if it's going to open 2017, they would have to be building it now. See anything getting built?

Looks like we won't get a Carsland, don't know why anyone thinks we will get a "Soaring around the world" (it's not even needed), we might get something or other based on Star Wars but probably not before 2019, and we'll all probably be dead before Avatarland opens.
This just in... the disney execs have figured out how to solve all of WDW woes in one swoop...new SW movie Episode 7 to replace soarin at EPCOT. There we go. Didn't have to spend a penny and fixed soarin and built a new SW land all at once. Mark it down it happening :)
