The NAACP would have a fit if Disney ever tried to release Song of the South. They already boycotted Splash Mountain when it first opened at Disneyland in the 80's. I'm sure Disney doesn't want that again.

Fantasia is also a masterpiece, but the stereotypical centaur was edited out. If they did that with Song of the South, we wouldn't have the film at all haha.
Oh god don't get me started on the centaur. :D People would have a fit if they depicted the Centaur their historical way. They are frisky to say politely.

Do I honestly need to answer this question?
I think its a valid claim. If you display them as anything but sad and downtrodden its considered wrong. Even though we do know of accounts of happy African Americans during this era. Many were happy that they were free, and their children would be free. They knew that for the first time their children had a better chance at life then they did. Any parent would find happiness in that.

Who said it was wrong?

It's implied. You can't show them as happy which is the major problem with the film that the NCAAP gave upon the release.

But what I do mean by this is that it still a grey area of what we can portray and what we can't. And this is a very hard time that is generally avoided in film because no director really wants to touch.

Context for a release of SotS is important. If Disney were to release it again on home video, I would urge them to work with an organization like the Criterion Collection where the film could have an outlet to celebrate its creative achievements and offer a platform for in depth essays and interviews about the film to foster a thorough discourse. Also that course of action should include no marketing of the film, just an announced release date via press release. If NAACP were informed in advance and consulted, I have trouble seeing it being boycotted.

Yes, but to portray a 19th century African American the same is wrong. As an African American myself, I understand why some of us don't like it. For the most part, I like Song of the South, but the incorrect portrayal rubs me the wrong way a little.
Not to create too much of a tangent, but what about Adventureland? The exotic locales are full of the artifacts of European colonial powers with no hint of opposition. Or even Fantasyland where there is no hint of the socio-economic and political strife of 19th century Europe.

I think that's a good approach.

You make good points. Maybe I'm more sensitive to Song of the South because I myself am African American.

What in the hell are you talking about? What fight? We're having an adult conversation. How about you take it to PMs if you don't like it?

Take what to PMs? You have been angling for a fight since this thread started. You have ignored all the facts placed in front of you and clung to your agenda. Someone finally bit, good for you.

Having a strong point of view is not the same as looking for a fight.

No, it sure isn't. But coming out with baseless and purposefully inflammatory statements sure is. Then even in the face of evidence that points directly opposite of your baseless statements, you continue to push your agenda. That's not a strong point of view, that's someone who wants to fight.

I'm just going to bite, because I really have no clue what you're talking about. Facts/evidence in regards to what?

We all have different views and are more likely going to get more upset and emotional about a topic that is emotional in it's nature. However I do believe (atleast for what I have be part of) as been a mostly adult conversation.

Thank you, and I agree. Do you know what xdan is talking about? Maybe you can help me out.
