Merida's New Look

I think it looks more sexualized because she looks older. And her dress wasn't cut that low in the original. Also the ratio of her bust to waist to hips wasn't as hourglass. And her lips are wider, she looks like she has heavy makeup on...

Exactly. Merida is a very young 16 where as Aurora is a very mature 16 in both beauty and manners. To try and conform Merida to that just doesn't work. Making her older feels very forced to me. This is the same girl who comes running through the palace halls with an apple in her mouth. Now she is poised and bedazzled. She is probably hating every single moment of it. As for the curves, looks like her mom put a little extra effort in that corset. Poor girl.

I get the whole body structure agrument of this, and yes I think that adds to issues towards women and their looks in this country. However I think it is more of an issue of disney adding to the issue of women of different body sizes being formed into "the perfect" women more then it has to do with being sexualized. If you want to argue being to sexualized then go to your local mall and see what some parents let their teenage daughters dress like. Go ahead and see if you can figure out which ones are 18 and which ones are 14, its not that easy. All this dress says to me is a formal dress that lots of girls that are that age where to very special occasions, like weddings or very formal dances, and in this cases being marketed for her cornonation. On the whole tomboy thing, yes a tomboy girl would not where this everyday but even they get dressed up from time to time, and on that I know several girls that are more tomboys and several that are more girly girls and quite honestly on those special occasions that the "tomboys" have to dress up they do a much better job then the girly girls do. Merida's mannerism's are not changing and in my opinion outside her body structure there was nothing wrong with the look. This a big deal even for her becoming a disney princess so the dressing up in a more formal look can be achieved. Disney marketing needs to do a much better job though then just throw these changes out there. Creating backstories on why princesses like merida have to occasionally dress like this would of honestly not been that hard and at least would of given a bs believable story that some moms could go tell their young daughters.

I saw this on another message board and it sums up how I feel:

I fail to see a substantial difference... She's got some glam with a new dress... but that isn't "sexy." She maintains a round face, same curves. She smiles with her mouth closed, brushed her hair and re-shaped her eyebrows... that is "sexy"? hmm.... sounds like a whole lot of upset people over a fancy new dress.

exactly.....they probably could have added maybe a little more curves to be more exact but this look does not say sexy

I have no problem with the dress. Girls are allowed to have different dresses. This one in particular, save for the low neckline, is basically her meet and greet dress. It's pretty. But, this was not just a limited time magic thing. I am 100% positive this was going to be Merida's redesign, just like the rest of the princesses. Only problem is where people didn't seem to have a problem with Cinderella getting changed (I did), they did had a problem with Merida and fought it....and won. Now Disney is back tracking, using her coronation as an excuse. I don't buy it. I hope all these reports of them using the dress on merchandise on a short term basis is true. And I hope the other redesigns go away as well.

First off your comment is more crass, why do I need to give you ideas, too busy being led around by the nose like a sheep? Glitter, and low necklines are hardly a thing to be worried about for cartoons. How about the violence and sexual content children are subjected to on a daily basis by the beloved media? Music, tv, movies, cartoons, internet, magazines, all contain items of sexuality and violence, that many many many parents allow their precious children to gobble up. But when Disney tries to give their Princesses a makeover, nobody cries out foul play, but when they do it to a brand spanking new Princess, mommies everywhere are up in arms. Double standards do not sit well with me.

Tell me why a cartoon character is a role model, especially a Princess? Most Princesses are the damsel in distress, especially feminine, helpless, and submissive, yet they all exhibit generally excellent qualities of character. There are plenty of men AND women that can be good role models. Scientists, doctors, nurses, police and even those in or military. Those are role models.

So as you can see I am not ignoring any debate or shirking from it. You wanna debate, bring it. Here is my nasty supposition to you. You are unwilling to face truth and fact, you say I have sterotyped obviously you, yet you fell into the sterotype on your own. Important causes? What are you deaf and blind, and uneducated? Look around you, open your eyes. Hunger, starvation, terrible schooling, crime, war, perversly corrupt politicians, inflation, record unemployment. Are these not more important that a woman's clothing?

If not, then there is no further point addressing you because you have your head and several others buried either in the sand or in a portion of your anatomy.

So I loathe your type of comments as it offers no solution but only an escalation to the conversation, specifically troll worthy of a new member.

Unfortunately they haven't, Disney is still intent on using the new redesign on certain products they haven't changed a thing, disney stated that the cg merida will be on some merchandise and the drawn merida will appear on certain things as well always been the game plan. http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/16/disney-wont-alter-princess-redesign-of-braves-merida

Man...five people discuss how they'd prefer Merida a bit tomboyish with a bow, rather than as a prom queen, and the entire Disney company is stopped in its tracks.

When twenty million people are crying in despair that EPCOT is being destroyed they go ahead anyway. Social media came fifteen years too late. :(

Sigh, If it only were that simple.

I think this is Disney Marketing Genius and use of social media helped. How can they get Merida's name on everyone's mind? They change her look and get press both positive and negative. "Any publicity is good publicity"

I would wager some good money that the majority of those in " social media " that complained dont even know her name and just call her brave or princess brave. This is just another example of a non issue being exaggerated by the 24 hour news cycle because they need to talk about some type of new scandal and if there is none they will create one.

I have to say I don't understand the firestorm. i think it what she'd look like a few years later. I like her look either way. Only thing i can say is I'm surprised they revamped her so soon other than that every princess gets tweeks done every decade or so.

Found this one just now. It feels better... better artwork, not sparkly, and she has her bow. I hope this one gets used more.

I like this one more, It has a nic combination of old and new Merida, more regal in my opinion. Thank Mickey she has her bow.
