Trip Report MAY THE SPORK BE WITH YOU!!! - a Kid-Free F&W Trip Report

Hi all!!! Well, we’re back from our 6 kid-free days at WDW (yes, much sadness), but now I at least get to share our trip with all of you! If you’re new to my trip reports, my name is Sandy. I did a pre-trip report for this one, but it wasn’t exactly my best work…i.e. I neglected it much of the time. Bad Sandy! Oh well, the real report will be significantly better. I swear, this is probably one of my best trips to WDW- EVER!!!

As many of you know…my reports are heavily picture infused things…mainly because I take TONS of pics so you can “walk” along with me. I took close to 4,000 pics this time…some better than others…but all to help paint the full picture of this trip. I will get into all of the pictures and heavy duty Disney stuff, but first a little background on the days leading up to the trip. Sorry- not much in the way of pictures in this portion, but I promise you…there really are TONS of pictures to come.

So, it’s the evening of November 4th and I’m prepping for our departure on November 7th. DH gets home as I’m putting our girls to bed and informed me that his mom was coming by to talk to us. Ok, so I’m now freaking out. His mom was supposed to have the girls stay with her so we could go on vacation, so this didn’t sound good. We’ve also have really bad luck before all of our recent WDW trips. I think we’d all agree that the car accident last year was the worst, but I am starting to think we’re cursed. In any event, my MIL comes by and drops a bit of a bomb on us. It’s really sad and scary stuff…I’m not at liberty to share the details…but from a safety standpoint, we couldn’t have the girls stay with her at her house. Thankfully, she was willing to stay at our house- so the big problem was solved, but now I had to work in time to deep clean the house. I mean, I was planning on a light cleaning…but I had to pack for me as well as for the girls (school day stuff, softball stuff, etc.) + I had to make a birthday cake!

Many of you know me from the Cake Talk thread over in the dining section, but I also make my own custom cakes on the side. My younger one’s bday is Nov 6th, so I had to have a cake the day before we went out of town…and of course she wanted something crazy (gee, I wonder who encourages this kind of madness??? ;) ). She wanted a 'fluffy' killer whale cake…just like her furry Shamu-esque plush named “Shammie.” Thankfully, the cake was fairly easy…well, minus the nearly 7 tubs of black food coloring I needed to achieve black buttercream. So, here’s the finished product as well as a pic with my ‘model.’

Day 1

So, the house is clean, the cake is done and we’re pretty much packed…and it’s after midnight…so, it’s officially our departure day!!! Our flight from Houston Hobby was supposed to take off at 6:15am, so we had to leave the house around 4am. I got about 3 hours of sleep, packed up the car, said good-bye to the girls (who were still in bed- asleep - MIL was in the guest bedroom), and drove to the airport. The roads were dead, but the airport was surprisingly busy. It took a while to get through security, but we at least had a good laugh when checking our bags. The ladies helping us overheard that it was a kid free trip to Disney and they made sure everyone in the area knew we were heading there without the kids. Most of the people just looked really confused, but we got a good laugh.

After DH forgetting to empty his pockets at security and having some minor issues, we make our way out to the gate and wait. Hey, at least it looks like we’re going to be on time.

15721134116_2d92fb6622_z.jpg

Boarding and take off are pretty uneventful. I’m utterly exhausted and fall asleep shortly after. I mean, I tend to sleep on planes even when I’m well rested, but this was that uncontrollable … sort of passing out … kind of deep sleep. I didn’t sleep for the entire flight. In fact, I woke up to a lovely cloud filled sky…

15558965649_e7978f5385_z.jpg

Actually, shortly after this pic the clouds started to clear and I could tell we were approaching the Florida coastline…

15124895804_6e5b2f0ec1_z.jpg

Ok, I actually took a series of pics as we approached. I guess this is the air equivalent of people taking pics of the state signs when crossing the state line on a road trip…

15558970619_5758715a2c_z.jpg

15744851845_37271be2ef_z.jpg

I also realized that we were flying over the Tampa/St Pete area. My parents lived just outside of St Pete for a few years after leaving Gainesville and before heading to the Ft. Lauderdale area. I took this pic because I noticed a large pink building right at the coastline. Anyone who knows this area knows this is the Don Cesar hotel. Unfortunately, even when cropping, blowing up and saturating the colors in the pic below…you can’t really see that there’s a big pink hotel…but it’s there- I swear it is!!!

15559691397_a7cb688a40_z.jpg

Now, I really enjoy being able to pick out familiar sites from the air. I regret not having my DSLR out with the telephoto hooked up for this, but you’re just going to have to take my word for it with the pics below. See, I usually can pick out Epcot from the air with no problem- in fact, it's why I intentionally sat us on this side of the plane. I mean, the “Swalphin” is super obvious and SSE kind of stands out. Still, for whatever reason, I couldn’t find them for the life of me. Then I spotted something…something I’ve never noticed before from the air. I’m sitting there thinking, “man, that white blob over there kind of reminds me of Space Mountain.” Then I realize the buildings I’m looking at to the right are BLT and the Contemporary!!! And while it was more a white blip from the air…I could see…THE CASTLE!!! And as my eyes adjusted and started picturing the WDW map in my head, I realized I could see the Poly, the GF, and yes…I was also able to pick out SSE and the Swalphin too! I could see all of this until shortly before landing. Talk about WELCOME HOME!!! I'll share one of these pics, but it's really tough to spot any of this...

15742948251_c0b2b0bf94_z.jpg

I tried cropping and zooming, but it’s still really hard to pick them out…but I swear they are there!
So, landing was uneventful and we were soon ready for the first “ride” of our trip.

15786077812_4d55c3535d_z.jpg

Kind of sad...I am now using the DSLR (vs my phone), but I'm so jittery from excitement that I can't take a decent shot!

I also had temporary amnesia…or magical euphoric memory loss (your pick)…and forgot where to find DME. Of course, the jetways now have it labeled on there…but I guess I also had some selective blindness upon arrival. So, I sucked it up, went to Information, and got directions to DME. I was kind of embarrassed, but clearly I needed the help. At least the info was correct…

15786075722_8f80bceeb0_z.jpg

As we get down to the ground level and start heading towards the DME area, I start seeing DME and DCL buses…and I’ll admit it, I got kind of misty. Thankfully, DH didn’t notice because I would have been mocked considerably. We had our magic bands on, so getting through everything was a breeze. In fact, the only tough part was convincing DH that our checked baggage would be delivered to our hotel. It’s like he’s never been to WDW before!!! We’re directed to line 2 and make our way all the way to the front.

15599083698_069b6c63e9_z.jpg

We’re the only ones there and it kind of looks like we just missed a bus for our grouping of resorts. Just then the CMs manning that section of lines asked which resort we were headed to for our trip. I said we’re going to the Poly and magically, they opened the ropes and led us out to a bus. Sadly, it was a magical yellow Mears bus, but hey…it would get us where we needed to go.

15786065312_56b5300a1a_z.jpg

Although, I was kind of jealous with all of the DCL buses around us…just something about having the Disney labeling on the bus. OK- feeling quite shallow right about now!

15599673840_09c0b70d1a_z.jpg

Still, I really can’t complain…we were on a bus, that bus was nearly full and about ready to go. I think we waited less than 5 minutes to start heading towards the resorts. This was also our first time seeing the new DME video and can I just say…I HATE IT!

15782627781_b6f1dd5e43_z.jpg

Before ever crossing onto Disney property, we saw a sign that Disney was near!

15782619541_40b2729c6a_z.jpg

Yeah- the Characters in Flight balloon is kind of a give-a-way that Disney is near! Shortly after spotting the balloon, one of the best views on earth came into sight…

15784481195_c639c6a9a0_z.jpg

I was obviously not in a good seat to snap any good pics, but I think most of us know that we were getting ready to pass under the Maingate!!! I remember being really frustrated after this as well. I wanted to check in on Facebook, basically confirming that we’re officially “inside the MAGIC BUBBLE,” but it wasn’t until we were farther in that I was able to get ‘Walt Disney World” to come up as a check in option. i.e. I didn’t want any of the parks or resorts. OK- minor annoyance…I know!

More to come on Day 1! Thanks for reading!

So, we just got off of Mission Space and I'm only beginning to feel the side effects. I guess at least the store after the ride has some fun space toys. We didn't buy anything or photograph any of them, but it was fun browsing.

We’re out and decide it’s time for some F&W “fun.” We head over to the old WoL pavilion. I can’t remember the last time I was in here, but I do remember when it opened. Talk about a major flashback! So, I took some pics to go with my flashback feelings…

I got very excited while in here because this is where all of the chocolate sculptures were located. Yes, they’re neat, but it was also cool because many of the cake artists who handle the custom cakes at WDW were involved in these projects. It was just fun to see so many names I recognized on these works.

And yes, seeing Chef Brian’s name on there as well as Chef Donald was super cool…knowing I’ve worked with these people…and getting a chance to see some of their non-cake work. IDK…it had almost an “I know him (in a roundabout way)- he’s made cakes for me!”

It would also be cool to see Jeff Barnes’ name on there as well as several people on the GF’s…but more on why later in the TR.

We pass by UoE and I snap a pic of this door. Why is it significant? This area used to be the VIP lounge when Exxon sponsored the attraction. My FIL used to work for Exxon…and when DH and I took our first trip to WDW as a couple in 1998, my FIL got us access to the Exxon VIP lounge at UoE. There wasn’t much to it, but it was well air conditioned, comfy seats, refreshments, tv, and we were allowed into the ride vehicles for our pick of seats before anyone else. Oh, and we could come back to visit at any point in the day if we need drinks or to relax. Plus, I know not everyone can say they’ve been into any of the old VIP lounges…so, it’s one of my more unique WDW memories/experiences. So, this is more than just a pic of a gated off area and door to me.

15245506603_53846f9fac_z.jpg

(at least I think this is where I think the door was located...I mean, it's only been nearly 17 years!)

And we’re moving on…

Going to try and get in few posts before doing some more room painting prep, working out and getting to the optometrist. FUN! It's also not looking like I'm going to meet my goal of finishing up this TR by New Year's...so, now aiming for MLK! LOL

So, when I left off, we were heading into the WS for F&W...

We return to Scotland so that DH can get some scotch. I honestly have no idea which one he got…

The pork was good, but the tuna- minus the crisp- was OUTSTANDING! The seaweed salad reminded me a lot of how Cali Grill serves their sashimi. And yes…I’m clearly guilty of some form of spork abuse! I have no idea how it happened, but the darn spork lost one of its tines. I think it gives him character, but DH compared it to a high school egg project and how his injury would be comparable to a cracked egg. He got all silly and dramatic…how I’m a bad parent and all and that I would be getting an F if this were for a grade in class. Yeah- over the top. The spork just got a haircut…nothing more!

And we’re walking again – hoping to avoid any approaching rain…

DH works for HP so we have been in the Mission:Space lounge many times. One year the employee who worked in the lounge got us VIP access to the lounges in Test Track, SSE, The Land and The American Adventure. That was a fun little tour :).

Jealous!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd heard that the other lounges were MUCH better than the one we'd been in, but to get to tour so many!!! WOW! :D

I was gonna say that!!! Seems so out of place.

It's funny...we often mock the stereotypical gift shop right outside of the attractions with that attraction based merch, but the reality is that you're much more likely to consider it seriously if it's in the "right" place. Oh well.

That is so true. I am a sucker for merchandise. I usually want to buy something from each ride/attraction. This past trip I wanted to get something yeti inspired since it was my first time riding Everest. Didn't have time to look though since it came a flood right after we finished.

Happy New Year's Eve!!! This may be my last post until next week since we have stuff to do later on today, have to take down all of the holiday décor (and it's A LOT), and start turning the girls' room into a Frozen wonderland. Hey, at least my homemade snow globes turned out well. I tend to excel at things involving glitter! LOL

So, we left off in Mexico on day 4...

After the ride, I still want a margarita…but this time we just get into the take out line…

(and a light)
15679156507_16e64d7e91_z.jpg

Unlike our previous visit to La Cava (the 2013 one...not the visit before the ride)…the line moved very quickly. It takes so little time to get to the bar.

(I know it's not tequila, but one of these days I'm going to splurge and try the Louis...just to say I've tried it!)

15864913925_f47133e531_z.jpg

The woman who was in front of us kind of “odded me out.” I mean, she seemed nice enough at first yet she waited in line for only a beer- a basic beer…managed to get a stroller through the tight line and up to the bar…and then wanted to know exactly what I was photographing. Like I said- odding me out.

And here are our drinks…pineapple for me and blood orange for DH.

15679142267_bf64a0cdb0_z.jpg

As some of you may recall, I was very disappointed in our margaritas last visit. To be perfectly blunt…they were weak. Even though we tried popular flavors last time, I did something I shouldn’t do. I broke one of my cardinal rules for margaritas…I ordered frozens. EEEK!!! We have a number of places locally that have extensive margarita menus (I guess it’s a perk of living in TX) and it’s always in your best interest to order something on the rocks. It’s just a more flavorful, more potent drink with more depth. So, we ordered flavors that were served on the rocks this time … and we were MUCH happier with La Cava.

And we’re walking…

Part of this journey was food related. I wanted a snack...just a snack. That's part of why we'd tried to sit down at La Cava. Just some chips and queso would have been nice for my queasy tummy. Still...I didn't get that-obviously-so, we're still walking to find something.

By this point, I was feeling REALLY REALLY hungry! And I wanted pizza! I had an ADR for Via Napoli early on…but I wasn’t keen on being tied to a lunch ADR. It’s usually the one meal of the day where I tend to regret having ADRs, so I canceled it way before the trip. So, of course I decide I want pizza and am stuck trying to see if we can get a walk up.

So, we're heading towards Italy...

I was thinking about this lady on a FB Disney group who insists she’s never been turned away from any restaurant…even at busy times. Maybe she’s legit, but I’ve been turned away before- from a variety of places and have seen many turned away. Still, I was hoping to have her so called luck at Via Napoli.

I walked up to the girl outside, asked if they were taking walk ups, and she said YES. SCORE! But she said I’d have to head in to talk to the girls inside…so I head in and wait. And of course, I take pics of lights…

Things were very busy inside and I was suddenly not feeling as positive. Sadly, my gut feeling was right. A very flustered girl informed me that they were not accepting any walk ups and sharply turned me away. UGH! So no pizza for me! Sure, I could have gotten quick service pizza, but I’m originally from NJ and I won’t eat just any old pizza…at least not if I have a say in the matter.

We even popped by Tutto Gusto on our way out of Italy since there were 2 Italian CMs hanging by the door, but they laughed and said they weren't open today. I guess I'd forgotten that they're not open every day.

So, I try to come up with a new plan while we walk (because I am getting really cranky at this point)…

And then it hits me…SHWARMA!

Again…just so pretty in Morocco.

We opt to share a combo shwarma plate…

DH usually turns his nose up at this kind of stuff, but he was in a cooperative mood. Let’s just say he’s now a huge fan and wants to eat lunch and dinner in Morocco on our next visit. It was DELICIOUS and a good deal for the money. I could have eaten that lamb all day!!!

We weren’t quite ready to get up, so I headed to the back for dessert. They had 3 different kinds of baklava, so I tried all 3!

15677473360_9d26ec402b_z.jpg

The one on the left is pistachio, middle is traditional walnut, and the right side is cashew.

And DH doesn’t like nuts…soooooooooooo, I just had to eat them all! I felt like such a Piggy!!! And yes, traditional walnut is still my fave.

And we’re back out (I'm feeling MUCH better) and we're walking (I think DH also got himself a tangerine cocktail for the walk)…

We were feeling done with Epcot (I know...last day of F&W and we're already done??? But yes, we were over it) so we headed to the IG.

Time to try and catch a boat to DHS…

I got into what I thought was a line for FP+, but the line was a mess and a rather snotty CM informed us where the line really was…in a condescending tone. The line was a waste…like so many of the midday FP+ experiences…nothing of any worth had any FP+s available.

So, we head off and try our luck with RnR since we didn’t get to ride it the other day.

And like most single rider lines...you feel like you're in the same spot forever. I've resorted to taking pics of guitar strings!

15862715051_18d8528668_z.jpg

(albeit very large strings!)

DH and I got separated just as we were going into this section…

15862711191_9efeb27e36_z.jpg

15677354510_a5ac3da931_z.jpg

And now it’s almost ride time…

15864695105_d0c78297e6_z.jpg

15864693005_854bbc92bc_z.jpg

As we get up towards the front…I see DH is back to only being a few people behind me. So, I let the handful of people behind me go on ahead so I can be with him while in line. It’s around this time where he also starts insisting that the ride does not go upside down. I’m like….uh, yes it does. He didn’t think so since the sign above just gave general instructions for stowing belongings.

Well, obviously he was wrong. What’s really crazy…just before the ride took off, I realized my camera wasn’t secure. In the last few seconds, I was able to stretch forwards (which wasn’t easy in the restraints) and loop my camera strap around my arm several times. I think I was just freaked out by the strange guy riding with me. DH thought I was overreacting, but then he saw the pics and while I can’t put my finger on it- even he saw him and said “something’s not quite right with that guy.” He was probably just awkward and harmless, but he made me uncomfortable. Oh well…it was a fun ride and even DH who hates roller coasters enjoyed! Maybe it’s because it’s in the dark, but this freaked him out a lot less than Everest. For me, I just don’t think the interior of the ride is as cool as Everest. The take off isn't good if you're still queasy from Mission Space, but still a mild coaster compared to some of the things I've ridden. Oh well…still fun!

And we’re out and shopping. It is Movember!!!

15838876906_3181fe2cb5_z.jpg

If we didn’t think it would go to her head…we would have bought this for Kendall.

15864055532_033843dc9e_z.jpg

And we’re out…

15678662269_810aaf6fdf_z.jpg

And we decide it’s time to leave the park. I’m still not quite right from Mission Space and I want some rest.

Still looking pretty dark, but never any full on downpours…

And we’re back at the Poly…

Woo. Back at work and all caught up!!

1) Oh my, a Frozen room!? I'm going to need to see pictures of that.
2) It's weird to me that the Adventureland stuff was supposed to be exclusive to Adventureland and the Marketplace Co-Op, but is now everywhere. But I love that Epcot wine glass. If only I actually liked wine a little more.
3) Mission: Space. Ugh, I barely made it off orange. I was the person sitting in the hallway wondering if death was coming.
4) I am terrified I am going to drop something into the abyss on rockin. I have straps around my legs to keep them secure.

We are still working on the room, but we're hoping to finish painting the walls by the end of the weekend and have everything else done within the next 2 weeks. This is my fave of our homemade snow globes to compliment the room...

Yeah...kind of like ToT...unless the kids beg, I will not be doing Mission Space- Orange again.

I'm quite thankful I was able to get that last second hold on the camera on RnR. I should have taken a pic of my ride pic since it looks pretty funny. :D
