Trip Report MAY THE SPORK BE WITH YOU!!! - a Kid-Free F&W Trip Report

Hi all!!! Well, we’re back from our 6 kid-free days at WDW (yes, much sadness), but now I at least get to share our trip with all of you! If you’re new to my trip reports, my name is Sandy. I did a pre-trip report for this one, but it wasn’t exactly my best work…i.e. I neglected it much of the time. Bad Sandy! Oh well, the real report will be significantly better. I swear, this is probably one of my best trips to WDW- EVER!!!

As many of you know…my reports are heavily picture infused things…mainly because I take TONS of pics so you can “walk” along with me. I took close to 4,000 pics this time…some better than others…but all to help paint the full picture of this trip. I will get into all of the pictures and heavy duty Disney stuff, but first a little background on the days leading up to the trip. Sorry- not much in the way of pictures in this portion, but I promise you…there really are TONS of pictures to come.

So, it’s the evening of November 4th and I’m prepping for our departure on November 7th. DH gets home as I’m putting our girls to bed and informed me that his mom was coming by to talk to us. Ok, so I’m now freaking out. His mom was supposed to have the girls stay with her so we could go on vacation, so this didn’t sound good. We’ve also have really bad luck before all of our recent WDW trips. I think we’d all agree that the car accident last year was the worst, but I am starting to think we’re cursed. In any event, my MIL comes by and drops a bit of a bomb on us. It’s really sad and scary stuff…I’m not at liberty to share the details…but from a safety standpoint, we couldn’t have the girls stay with her at her house. Thankfully, she was willing to stay at our house- so the big problem was solved, but now I had to work in time to deep clean the house. I mean, I was planning on a light cleaning…but I had to pack for me as well as for the girls (school day stuff, softball stuff, etc.) + I had to make a birthday cake!

Many of you know me from the Cake Talk thread over in the dining section, but I also make my own custom cakes on the side. My younger one’s bday is Nov 6th, so I had to have a cake the day before we went out of town…and of course she wanted something crazy (gee, I wonder who encourages this kind of madness??? ;) ). She wanted a 'fluffy' killer whale cake…just like her furry Shamu-esque plush named “Shammie.” Thankfully, the cake was fairly easy…well, minus the nearly 7 tubs of black food coloring I needed to achieve black buttercream. So, here’s the finished product as well as a pic with my ‘model.’

Day 1

So, the house is clean, the cake is done and we’re pretty much packed…and it’s after midnight…so, it’s officially our departure day!!! Our flight from Houston Hobby was supposed to take off at 6:15am, so we had to leave the house around 4am. I got about 3 hours of sleep, packed up the car, said good-bye to the girls (who were still in bed- asleep - MIL was in the guest bedroom), and drove to the airport. The roads were dead, but the airport was surprisingly busy. It took a while to get through security, but we at least had a good laugh when checking our bags. The ladies helping us overheard that it was a kid free trip to Disney and they made sure everyone in the area knew we were heading there without the kids. Most of the people just looked really confused, but we got a good laugh.

After DH forgetting to empty his pockets at security and having some minor issues, we make our way out to the gate and wait. Hey, at least it looks like we’re going to be on time.

15721134116_2d92fb6622_z.jpg

Boarding and take off are pretty uneventful. I’m utterly exhausted and fall asleep shortly after. I mean, I tend to sleep on planes even when I’m well rested, but this was that uncontrollable … sort of passing out … kind of deep sleep. I didn’t sleep for the entire flight. In fact, I woke up to a lovely cloud filled sky…

15558965649_e7978f5385_z.jpg

Actually, shortly after this pic the clouds started to clear and I could tell we were approaching the Florida coastline…

15559416708_b0ba8c3a46_z.jpg

15124895804_6e5b2f0ec1_z.jpg

Ok, I actually took a series of pics as we approached. I guess this is the air equivalent of people taking pics of the state signs when crossing the state line on a road trip…

15558970619_5758715a2c_z.jpg

15744851845_37271be2ef_z.jpg

I also realized that we were flying over the Tampa/St Pete area. My parents lived just outside of St Pete for a few years after leaving Gainesville and before heading to the Ft. Lauderdale area. I took this pic because I noticed a large pink building right at the coastline. Anyone who knows this area knows this is the Don Cesar hotel. Unfortunately, even when cropping, blowing up and saturating the colors in the pic below…you can’t really see that there’s a big pink hotel…but it’s there- I swear it is!!!

15559691397_a7cb688a40_z.jpg

Now, I really enjoy being able to pick out familiar sites from the air. I regret not having my DSLR out with the telephoto hooked up for this, but you’re just going to have to take my word for it with the pics below. See, I usually can pick out Epcot from the air with no problem- in fact, it's why I intentionally sat us on this side of the plane. I mean, the “Swalphin” is super obvious and SSE kind of stands out. Still, for whatever reason, I couldn’t find them for the life of me. Then I spotted something…something I’ve never noticed before from the air. I’m sitting there thinking, “man, that white blob over there kind of reminds me of Space Mountain.” Then I realize the buildings I’m looking at to the right are BLT and the Contemporary!!! And while it was more a white blip from the air…I could see…THE CASTLE!!! And as my eyes adjusted and started picturing the WDW map in my head, I realized I could see the Poly, the GF, and yes…I was also able to pick out SSE and the Swalphin too! I could see all of this until shortly before landing. Talk about WELCOME HOME!!! I'll share one of these pics, but it's really tough to spot any of this...

15742948251_c0b2b0bf94_z.jpg

I tried cropping and zooming, but it’s still really hard to pick them out…but I swear they are there!
So, landing was uneventful and we were soon ready for the first “ride” of our trip.

15786077812_4d55c3535d_z.jpg

Kind of sad...I am now using the DSLR (vs my phone), but I'm so jittery from excitement that I can't take a decent shot!

I also had temporary amnesia…or magical euphoric memory loss (your pick)…and forgot where to find DME. Of course, the jetways now have it labeled on there…but I guess I also had some selective blindness upon arrival. So, I sucked it up, went to Information, and got directions to DME. I was kind of embarrassed, but clearly I needed the help. At least the info was correct…

15786075722_8f80bceeb0_z.jpg

As we get down to the ground level and start heading towards the DME area, I start seeing DME and DCL buses…and I’ll admit it, I got kind of misty. Thankfully, DH didn’t notice because I would have been mocked considerably. We had our magic bands on, so getting through everything was a breeze. In fact, the only tough part was convincing DH that our checked baggage would be delivered to our hotel. It’s like he’s never been to WDW before!!! We’re directed to line 2 and make our way all the way to the front.

15599083698_069b6c63e9_z.jpg

We’re the only ones there and it kind of looks like we just missed a bus for our grouping of resorts. Just then the CMs manning that section of lines asked which resort we were headed to for our trip. I said we’re going to the Poly and magically, they opened the ropes and led us out to a bus. Sadly, it was a magical yellow Mears bus, but hey…it would get us where we needed to go.

15786065312_56b5300a1a_z.jpg

Although, I was kind of jealous with all of the DCL buses around us…just something about having the Disney labeling on the bus. OK- feeling quite shallow right about now!

15599673840_09c0b70d1a_z.jpg

Still, I really can’t complain…we were on a bus, that bus was nearly full and about ready to go. I think we waited less than 5 minutes to start heading towards the resorts. This was also our first time seeing the new DME video and can I just say…I HATE IT!

15782627781_b6f1dd5e43_z.jpg

Before ever crossing onto Disney property, we saw a sign that Disney was near!

15782619541_40b2729c6a_z.jpg

Yeah- the Characters in Flight balloon is kind of a give-a-way that Disney is near! Shortly after spotting the balloon, one of the best views on earth came into sight…

15784481195_c639c6a9a0_z.jpg

I was obviously not in a good seat to snap any good pics, but I think most of us know that we were getting ready to pass under the Maingate!!! I remember being really frustrated after this as well. I wanted to check in on Facebook, basically confirming that we’re officially “inside the MAGIC BUBBLE,” but it wasn’t until we were farther in that I was able to get ‘Walt Disney World” to come up as a check in option. i.e. I didn’t want any of the parks or resorts. OK- minor annoyance…I know!

More to come on Day 1! Thanks for reading!

So, when I last posted we had just returned to the Poly to rest before dinner...

We have to get to BW for dinner…so we head to MK and then grab a BW bus from MK…

15862653591_ac13ae371f_z.jpg

While waiting…I see a bus labeled as “Tiana.” We saw several like this during this trip. I can’t confirm, but I’ve heard that they use character names like this when a bus is out of service. i.e. it looks nicer.

15244988443_16e4f845c4_z.jpg

Our bus is here…

15838828406_1f7c4b1a77_z.jpg

And we’ve arrived at the BW!

15838825636_367e0f4bdf_z.jpg

I really wish we had been able to change our lodging to BW. I just love the lobby and décor aspects.

I guess it’s a NJ thing!

We have time to kill before our ADR, so we head out to the deck and call the girls before their bedtime. I just LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE this area!

We’re still running a smidge early, but we head down to Flying Fish. I’ve never been inside before, but I immediately fall in love with the décor!

We saw a number of people try for walk ups while we waited. While they were running on schedule for those with ADRs, they were booked up enough that walk ups would be waiting until at least 9:30pm to be seated. It was about 7:30pm at this point, so needless to say, nobody stuck around to wait.

Of course DH also ran to the bathroom just when our table was ready. I did have a nice chat with one of the hostesses about cakes. Obviously, they see quite a few since they’re serviced by BW bakery…but it was just fun to hear about some of the cool cakes she’s seen and share descriptions of some of course.

Right after we’re seated, I happen to notice I have an email from Epcot with our SSE pic from earlier that day…

OK…back to more important stuff. I imagine Hitchcock would change this to technology vs. conversation if this were in today’s world.

I just love all of the details in here. I know I’d seen pics before, but it was such a feast for the eyes in person. It just all comes together when you’re immersed in it and can really appreciate the boardwalk amusement feel to it all.

Blurry bread…

DH perusing the menu...
15772220335_01dc2d7e19_z.jpg

So, it’s appetizer time. After last night’s disappointing quick service, it was nice to be back in TS dining. DH had the duo with the Caesar salad and crab cake…

15242288644_805a29cc69_z.jpg

I just had the crab cake…

15862574141_2589025f0a_z.jpg

It was DELISH!!!!!!!!!!!! DH also raved about his salad. I think he actually liked it better than the crab cake!

It was funny, our server tried to make all kinds of recommendations, but we both knew just what we wanted before she had a chance to say a word. She was kind of stiff in her service/delivery, but still attentive. For our entrees…DH had the scallops over risotto…

15862571791_2b5ea174f7_z.jpg

And I had the famous potato crusted snapper over leek fondue…

15677043218_71d7e9581f_z.jpg

I can’t eat bivalves, so I didn’t get to sample DH’s food…but he said it was amazing. He couldn’t even finish the risotto. OK, I shouldn’t say it like that because I couldn’t finish my leeks. Ya know, you see leek fondue on the menu and while it says it’s rich…you don’t really get a proper grasp of just how rich this is until you start digging in. Rich is an understatement…a serious understatement. I think I maybe ate about 1/3 of my leek fondue. It was amazingly decadent! The entire dish was just fabulous! Totally worth all of the rave reviews!

We weren’t drinking tonight nor were we eating dessert…but that’s OK…we were stuffed.

Now, clearly we had great food at dinner…but there was something else very interesting about this meal. If you’ve eaten in Flying Fish, you probably know that there are some tables that are pretty close together. Well, about halfway through our meal- we got some neighbors. They were a really nice couple…from the Pittsburgh area, I think.

So, we’re chatting on and off with our neighbors…everything from restaurants to food allergy tips. Somehow cakes come into this. I think it was because some people were balking at the price of our cake from the other night. I don’t remember how I interjected it into the convo, but I said something about running a cake thread on one of the forums. The woman suddenly got VERY excited and said she knows who I am. I am assuming she thinks I’m Lurkyloo from Disboards, so I jump in and clarify that I’m not Lurkyloo and that I’m on a different forum. Not that she said I was Lurkyloo…I just assumed. She jumped back in saying…no, you’re the other one…you’re on that other forum. And it turns out it was me!!! A friend had referred her to WDW Magic when it came to ordering a cake for her husband’s bday for their previous trip. I think she said she’s not a member on here, but she used all of the info to order his cake. So, suddenly- this is SOMETHING!

I’m now face to face with a person…a total stranger…essentially, a lurker (a nice one)…who has used my thread. And the cake recipient is also there. It was strange, but awesome…like I was mildly Disney famous. LOL. It went well beyond people recognizing me from my trip reports. I don’t know…hard to describe, but it was such an awesome feeling and experience. Definitely something I could never plan for…and DH had to bring me down to earth and tell me not to let it go to my head…too much!

So, we say our good-byes and head out to the Boardwalk.

15678789697_2ee93b9e90_z.jpg

I had a master plan for this evening. See, MVMCP was going on at MK and we were pretty much tired of F&W, but DHS was open late for EMH and I desperately needed some time to fully appreciate Osborne Lights. So, we headed back to DHS!

And before you know it, we are in the glorious glow of the lights.

15863916472_64aa105fd8_z.jpg

In fact, it was quiet enough in there that they were allowing people to enter up by Muppets.

I also had plenty of time this evening…so my pics are much better and more plentiful (yeah- you're going to get A LOT of light pics).

Hello again Purple Cat!

15245718803_a85ef94335_z.jpg

I recently heard a rumor that the cat gets moved throughout the season and not just put in 1 place each year. Don’t know if there’s any truth to this, but it would be cool if they go back and hide it a few times each year. We also heard a rumor of an orange cat. I’ve seen pics from last year or a previous year, but I’ve never seen it and none of the CMs there that night had ever heard of an orange cat. I also heard a rumor that they move the cat multiple times during a single year...but not sure if there's any truth to this either.

Dinosaurs!

Probably my fave pic of the night…

15243069754_fdb27cd46b_z.jpg

It was an absolutely PERFECT night in Osborne Lights! It wasn’t very crowded…to the point that even CMs were dancing around in the lights. Seriously…at one point, a bunch of them formed a circle, joined hands and were dancing around to the music. All I can say is that Disney better find another good home for the lights onsite if they’re moved out of this area for the reworking of DHS. The lights are just so darn special and need a home where they can really shine.

Still taking pics in the lights...

(good-bye lights :( )

And it’s now time to leave DHS…

15864699002_6c5c6e0411_z.jpg

We heard the good-night message for the park just as we were approaching the exit. I guess that’s our call to leave.

So, we grab the bus from DHS back to the Poly, I have another small cake picnic on my floor, and then head to bed. At least we can sleep in a little bit for day 5. In other words, no early morning breakfasts! It’s a good thing too…we’re EXHAUSTED!

Actually…just after I got in bed, I made the decision that we’re not doing quick service on our last night. I log into the Disney dining website and manage to snag an ADR for Narcoosee’s for the next night. Can’t remember the exact time, but it was sometime between 6:30-7pm. So, now we’re good for dinner the next night…and I can sleep in peace knowing meals will be well covered for the next day.

Up Next....DAY 5 :) Thanks for reading :)

I can confirm that CMs do move the purple cat...at least this year. We were there a week or so after you and I spent the better part of a morning (when the area wasn't crowded) trying to find it. Finally asked a CM who told me the general area but not the exact spot...the cat was high up in the inside corner of a building and was partially obscured...had a hard time seeing it even when it was illuminated that night.

And I think the orange cat is just a rumor.

Good to know that they move it during the course of the season. that does at least add some fun to it.

I'm not sure what to make of the orange cat. I'm part of Disney group on Facebook and there was a mini debate over whether the cat was orange or purple. Now, I knew it to be purple, but some others on this group had claimed to only have seen an orange cat. Someone posted a pic of said orange cat...

orange cat.jpg

While it looks convincing...it is the internet and people post all kinds of crazy things that may or may not be true.

Hi, I am enjoying your report. I was just wondering, I saw somewhere that there was a Jack Skellington image or something newly introduced this year, Did you see it? Oh in the Osborn lights, I mean.

Thank you :) They added a new choreographed song this year for the "dancing" which is from Nightmare Before Christmas. This is the video...

We were lucky enough to catch this on our first night in Osborne Lights this trip. It was the 2nd dance we saw that night before heading out for dinner. If you watch the sections with the canopy, you can sometimes pick Jack out...especially at the very end.

Day 5

So, we planned on sleeping in “a little” on day 5. So, I think the alarm went off around 7:30am. Yeah…not much sleeping in, but it’s better than pre-7am! DH didn’t really respond to the alarm, but I got up and went towards the bathroom to start getting ready. I woke up fairly happy, but I noticed this on the floor as I approached the bathroom.

15682503130_bc96072f36_z.jpg

What’s the big idea?!?!?!? DME departure or check-out docs were always left on our exterior door handle midday. Now, I can understand slipping it under the door for privacy concerns, but I wasn’t ready to see this first thing in the am. BOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Oh well, I put it aside and continued getting ready. I even had my Cheshire Cat shirt all ready to go for our “brunch” today.

15869197552_f92cd81251_z.jpg

I was ready to go, but DH was lagging behind….soooooooo, I stepped out to the balcony to take some pics. I still don’t think Poly really is me, but it’s a nice lush green view off of the balcony. This should also serve as a prime example of how it's really tough to know that any construction is going on when you're off at your longhouse in your room...

So, I guess I forgot that people were now getting into the parks earlier…meaning the welcome show was now earlier. Let’s just say it was PACKED when we got to MK.
Thankfully, we didn’t miss the show.

Fire chief is welcoming us today...

Sorry...had to take a break to get in some time on the elliptical and with my weights/exercise ball. No mileage tonight since my poor feet and knees are a mess. They're just not happy with my current joggers. There's still plenty of mileage left on them, but I'm listening to the pain and switching back to a version I had over the summer that I really liked. They should arrive tomorrow. OK...enough about my pains!

Day 5 continued...

I forgot to note how the crowds nearly impacted our view of the show. The park wasn't open yet and the crowds were already larger than when we'd seen in 2012, just before Thanksgiving. The woman going through bag check next to me was taking welcome show viewing tips from the guy checking her bag and all I can think is, "you'll be lucky if you can even find a place to stand!" It was bad enough that after I scanned my magic band, they stopped letting people through. So everyone and their mother behind me was stuck with an obstructed view of the show. Mind you, I've watched the show from outside of bag check and had a great view, but the view gets compromised when you're right on top of the turn styles...or whatever the proper name for them is now. Oh well...we were in.

I swear, the welcome show always makes me tear up. I think it’s because I used the Welcome Medley for Kendall’s surprise trip in 2011. Still, I’m probably one of the only people in that crowd who has tears streaming down her face. I guess at least I can hide a bit behind my camera and snap LOTS of pics!

The park is now open and it's time to try to make our way in...

I thought the crowds would feel a bit better after people went in different directions at the end of MSUSA, but it was pretty thick. For whatever reason, I forgot it was Veteran’s Day…and needless to say, MK was in for a BUSY day! Now I know attendance is up, but as I'd noted before...we were there just before Thanksgiving in 2012 and this felt considerably more crowded. Oh well, you can’t complain too much…we were at WDW after all!

Also took some pics of the new decorations on MSUSA. Yeah…still not a fan.

(although, I do like that the bells are iridescent and sparkly!)

We get up to the end of the street…

...and decide to turn towards Tomorrowland just to get away from the pack.

It’s not even 9am yet, so it’s too early for our first FP+, so we look for other things to ride. I guess we went the long way…

15247339784_e162932742_z.jpg

…but we decided to hit the tea cups. Although, I couldn't help but take pics of the MASSIVE line at SDMT. It was about 9am and it was already around 120 minute wait. INSANE!

15843782826_b19ca9d21f_z.jpg

So, we decide to get in the significantly shorter line for the tea cups...

More line...

15843757956_14cec48195_z.jpg

DH has a nasty habit of spinning me like crazy. I didn’t need a repeat of the Mission Space Orange queasiness, so I insisted on separate cups.

15249912573_d30f8a2ef9_z.jpg

(there are those crazy people dancing again! Probably the last ride I'd consider for dancing)

See...there he is in his own little cup.

15683553889_3463586cfb_z.jpg

He had all kinds of snarky things to say to me in all of this, but I kept saying things (in creepy soothing tones) like, “feel the gentle spinning of the cup” and “enjoy the light breeze from the delicate spin.” Hey, I thought I was a riot!

This had to be one of my most pleasant experiences on the tea cups! He didn’t think it was fun, but I didn’t feel like I had to barf…and that’s what matters! And he looked like he enjoyed it. I guess this is also why I have a number of pics from the ride.

And we're off of the tea cups...and for the first time ever....I've ridden them with DH and don't feel horribly ill!

You are not the only one with tears watching the Welcome Show ;)

Good to know...because sometimes I just feel like this overly emotional Disney person :D And it wouldn't be the only time during the course of this day that the water works turned on for me. :bawling: We'll just refer to them as "MousekeTEARS."

Finally caught up with the report. What an exciting couple days. Love the Osborne light show and a must do on the bucket list. Dinner at the Flying Fish looked spectacular. Following along.

I wish I could have that meal at Flying Fish at least once a week. It was soooooo good! Sadly, my dinner tonight was grilled chicken, kale and quinoa. Doesn't have the same ring, does it?

getting me excited to see home again soon!!!!!!!!!!

:) I'm excited for all of your plans :)

Nice report so far. And I always tear up at the Welcome show. I even tear up when I'm listening to it on my iPod.

The worst is when I try to get a does of magic and watch this stuff at work. I'll be sitting there at my desk pretending it's my allergies!

New joggers arrived today...they are much MUCH more ORANGE than I thought they'd be...but that's kind of a good thing. On a positive note, no ankle - knee or calf pain with them. On a negative note - my toes don't seem to like them even though there's plenty of room in the toe box. OK...you guys probably don't want to hear about my jogger woes, so on with day 5!!!!!!!!

When I left off, we had just exited the Mad Tea Party...

After the tea cups, we checked out the even more MASSIVE line to SDMT. I think it was still just a hair after 9am at this point. YIKES!

15868903002_da017e2cb6_z.jpg

We still had some time to burn before mine train, so we headed to Pooh. It was kind of funny…this little girl that reminded us of Sammie insisted on him joining in the queue games with her as we made our way to the front of the line. It was soooooo cute! Either way, I still think this is one of the more fun queues.

This is one FP line that really moves! I think all of my pics in this portion were blurry just because we were going so quickly.

We did have one sad moment just before our ride started. There was an older gentleman boarding the seats in front of us. He was tall, but not crazy tall, yet he couldn’t comfortably sit in the SDMT seats. Now, they are narrow to begin with, but there just isn’t a lot of legroom. The man was hoping to sit between 2 seats because he could fit his legs in that way, but the CMs couldn’t allow it due to safety reasons. He appeared to be a Veteran too, so kind of sad to burn a FP on Veteran’s Day just to be turned away. I’ve heard a number of tall people have had issues with the seating in this ride…not everyone, but still quite a few. Oh well…not much we can do.

We do manage to get in the very last car for this ride. We were middle of the train last time we rode, but in the back…we were totally hoping to rock around a lot more in the cars.

Ride time!!!

Crazy to think this is less than half of my ride pics!

Either way, being in the very back was great. Yeah- it rocked so much more back there and it was AWESOME!
