Trip Report MAY THE SPORK BE WITH YOU!!! - a Kid-Free F&W Trip Report

Hi all!!! Well, we’re back from our 6 kid-free days at WDW (yes, much sadness), but now I at least get to share our trip with all of you! If you’re new to my trip reports, my name is Sandy. I did a pre-trip report for this one, but it wasn’t exactly my best work…i.e. I neglected it much of the time. Bad Sandy! Oh well, the real report will be significantly better. I swear, this is probably one of my best trips to WDW- EVER!!!

As many of you know…my reports are heavily picture infused things…mainly because I take TONS of pics so you can “walk” along with me. I took close to 4,000 pics this time…some better than others…but all to help paint the full picture of this trip. I will get into all of the pictures and heavy duty Disney stuff, but first a little background on the days leading up to the trip. Sorry- not much in the way of pictures in this portion, but I promise you…there really are TONS of pictures to come.

So, it’s the evening of November 4th and I’m prepping for our departure on November 7th. DH gets home as I’m putting our girls to bed and informed me that his mom was coming by to talk to us. Ok, so I’m now freaking out. His mom was supposed to have the girls stay with her so we could go on vacation, so this didn’t sound good. We’ve also have really bad luck before all of our recent WDW trips. I think we’d all agree that the car accident last year was the worst, but I am starting to think we’re cursed. In any event, my MIL comes by and drops a bit of a bomb on us. It’s really sad and scary stuff…I’m not at liberty to share the details…but from a safety standpoint, we couldn’t have the girls stay with her at her house. Thankfully, she was willing to stay at our house- so the big problem was solved, but now I had to work in time to deep clean the house. I mean, I was planning on a light cleaning…but I had to pack for me as well as for the girls (school day stuff, softball stuff, etc.) + I had to make a birthday cake!

Many of you know me from the Cake Talk thread over in the dining section, but I also make my own custom cakes on the side. My younger one’s bday is Nov 6th, so I had to have a cake the day before we went out of town…and of course she wanted something crazy (gee, I wonder who encourages this kind of madness??? ;) ). She wanted a 'fluffy' killer whale cake…just like her furry Shamu-esque plush named “Shammie.” Thankfully, the cake was fairly easy…well, minus the nearly 7 tubs of black food coloring I needed to achieve black buttercream. So, here’s the finished product as well as a pic with my ‘model.’

Day 1

So, the house is clean, the cake is done and we’re pretty much packed…and it’s after midnight…so, it’s officially our departure day!!! Our flight from Houston Hobby was supposed to take off at 6:15am, so we had to leave the house around 4am. I got about 3 hours of sleep, packed up the car, said good-bye to the girls (who were still in bed- asleep - MIL was in the guest bedroom), and drove to the airport. The roads were dead, but the airport was surprisingly busy. It took a while to get through security, but we at least had a good laugh when checking our bags. The ladies helping us overheard that it was a kid free trip to Disney and they made sure everyone in the area knew we were heading there without the kids. Most of the people just looked really confused, but we got a good laugh.

After DH forgetting to empty his pockets at security and having some minor issues, we make our way out to the gate and wait. Hey, at least it looks like we’re going to be on time.

15721134116_2d92fb6622_z.jpg

Boarding and take off are pretty uneventful. I’m utterly exhausted and fall asleep shortly after. I mean, I tend to sleep on planes even when I’m well rested, but this was that uncontrollable … sort of passing out … kind of deep sleep. I didn’t sleep for the entire flight. In fact, I woke up to a lovely cloud filled sky…

15558965649_e7978f5385_z.jpg

Actually, shortly after this pic the clouds started to clear and I could tell we were approaching the Florida coastline…

15559416708_b0ba8c3a46_z.jpg

15124895804_6e5b2f0ec1_z.jpg

Ok, I actually took a series of pics as we approached. I guess this is the air equivalent of people taking pics of the state signs when crossing the state line on a road trip…

15558970619_5758715a2c_z.jpg

15744851845_37271be2ef_z.jpg

I also realized that we were flying over the Tampa/St Pete area. My parents lived just outside of St Pete for a few years after leaving Gainesville and before heading to the Ft. Lauderdale area. I took this pic because I noticed a large pink building right at the coastline. Anyone who knows this area knows this is the Don Cesar hotel. Unfortunately, even when cropping, blowing up and saturating the colors in the pic below…you can’t really see that there’s a big pink hotel…but it’s there- I swear it is!!!

15559691397_a7cb688a40_z.jpg

Now, I really enjoy being able to pick out familiar sites from the air. I regret not having my DSLR out with the telephoto hooked up for this, but you’re just going to have to take my word for it with the pics below. See, I usually can pick out Epcot from the air with no problem- in fact, it's why I intentionally sat us on this side of the plane. I mean, the “Swalphin” is super obvious and SSE kind of stands out. Still, for whatever reason, I couldn’t find them for the life of me. Then I spotted something…something I’ve never noticed before from the air. I’m sitting there thinking, “man, that white blob over there kind of reminds me of Space Mountain.” Then I realize the buildings I’m looking at to the right are BLT and the Contemporary!!! And while it was more a white blip from the air…I could see…THE CASTLE!!! And as my eyes adjusted and started picturing the WDW map in my head, I realized I could see the Poly, the GF, and yes…I was also able to pick out SSE and the Swalphin too! I could see all of this until shortly before landing. Talk about WELCOME HOME!!! I'll share one of these pics, but it's really tough to spot any of this...

15742948251_c0b2b0bf94_z.jpg

I tried cropping and zooming, but it’s still really hard to pick them out…but I swear they are there!
So, landing was uneventful and we were soon ready for the first “ride” of our trip.

15786080132_a1c573680e_z.jpg

15786077812_4d55c3535d_z.jpg

Kind of sad...I am now using the DSLR (vs my phone), but I'm so jittery from excitement that I can't take a decent shot!

I also had temporary amnesia…or magical euphoric memory loss (your pick)…and forgot where to find DME. Of course, the jetways now have it labeled on there…but I guess I also had some selective blindness upon arrival. So, I sucked it up, went to Information, and got directions to DME. I was kind of embarrassed, but clearly I needed the help. At least the info was correct…

15786075722_8f80bceeb0_z.jpg

As we get down to the ground level and start heading towards the DME area, I start seeing DME and DCL buses…and I’ll admit it, I got kind of misty. Thankfully, DH didn’t notice because I would have been mocked considerably. We had our magic bands on, so getting through everything was a breeze. In fact, the only tough part was convincing DH that our checked baggage would be delivered to our hotel. It’s like he’s never been to WDW before!!! We’re directed to line 2 and make our way all the way to the front.

15599083698_069b6c63e9_z.jpg

We’re the only ones there and it kind of looks like we just missed a bus for our grouping of resorts. Just then the CMs manning that section of lines asked which resort we were headed to for our trip. I said we’re going to the Poly and magically, they opened the ropes and led us out to a bus. Sadly, it was a magical yellow Mears bus, but hey…it would get us where we needed to go.

15786065312_56b5300a1a_z.jpg

Although, I was kind of jealous with all of the DCL buses around us…just something about having the Disney labeling on the bus. OK- feeling quite shallow right about now!

15599673840_09c0b70d1a_z.jpg

Still, I really can’t complain…we were on a bus, that bus was nearly full and about ready to go. I think we waited less than 5 minutes to start heading towards the resorts. This was also our first time seeing the new DME video and can I just say…I HATE IT!

15782627781_b6f1dd5e43_z.jpg

Before ever crossing onto Disney property, we saw a sign that Disney was near!

15782619541_40b2729c6a_z.jpg

Yeah- the Characters in Flight balloon is kind of a give-a-way that Disney is near! Shortly after spotting the balloon, one of the best views on earth came into sight…

15760802106_e432775984_z.jpg

15784481195_c639c6a9a0_z.jpg

I was obviously not in a good seat to snap any good pics, but I think most of us know that we were getting ready to pass under the Maingate!!! I remember being really frustrated after this as well. I wanted to check in on Facebook, basically confirming that we’re officially “inside the MAGIC BUBBLE,” but it wasn’t until we were farther in that I was able to get ‘Walt Disney World” to come up as a check in option. i.e. I didn’t want any of the parks or resorts. OK- minor annoyance…I know!

More to come on Day 1! Thanks for reading!

So, I busted my butt today and yesterday so I could give myself a bit of a rest. There was space on our calendar, so now I have tomorrow and Friday off. Friday will be insane, but tomorrow 'should' be a nice break...barring any unforeseen issues.

In rereading what I posted last night, I realized that I skipped over some things on PotC. Firstly, I wanted to note that the mist projection at the beginning of the ride never functioned during any of our rides for this trip. DH and I were pretty bummed about that as it’s become a favorite part of the experience. Still, it doesn’t kill it for us either. Secondly, while I often discuss IASW as my fave, I don’t know if I’ve mentioned…or mentioned in a while…that I go through phases where PotC becomes my fave. Maybe it’s the smell of the water, maybe it’s the queue, but there is something so peaceful and relaxing about PotC to me. It’s one of the few attractions at WDW where I also really feel like I’m there, but can relax into the moment enough to also pause and think to myself how lucky we are to be here. OK…enough back tracking…

Since we’d missed our nighttime SDMT FP+ the previous night, I suggested to DH that we check the standby time. I mean, if everyone was waiting on the parade, fireworks, etc….surely the line wouldn’t be as bad. When we got there, standby was posted as 40 min, so we decided to hop in line…

15855059472_3bc0f8dd49_z.jpg

15855700905_234325c60e_z.jpg

I do think some of the games in the queue are pretty fun. Sorry the pics are awful, but first up are the jewel sorting screens…

15829871246_97f5aa9a51_z.jpg

15829868776_67c029f62f_z.jpg

Then the spinning jewel buckets…

15855050932_01ff232dd9_z.jpg

And I don’t think I got a pic of the one involving water...unless this is it??? Very hard to tell...

15233393294_64fdfac66f_z.jpg

Nah...I think it's more spinning buckets...oh well.

The ride itself is a lot of fun. It’s short and not as intense, but I like the mix of roller coaster and dark ride. And yeah…I got choked up as soon as I heard that first “heigh ho!”

The only negative part…we weren’t on the ride during Wishes. We were just a few minutes off. Speaking of which, DH wanted to use the restroom…so we headed over by Cheshire Café. As I’m waiting outside for him, I hear the intro music to Wishes…and suddenly, “When stars are born, they possess a gift or two. One of those is this. They have the power to make a WISH come true.”

15669658869_110494857f_z.jpg

Yes, I was now standing right under Wishes. This was the only pic I took from this spot because I was just too excited. I think I was actually jumping up and down. When DH found me out there he literally had to drag me away. It’s probably a good thing because we were getting showered in ash and even a few embers. This would be the first time during the trip that I'd have a "fire is hot" reaction...like I was so caught up in Disney magic, that normal logic sort of flew out the window. Well, that and my hair might go up in flames!

We come to an agreement that we’ll ride the Peoplemover so I can get a few glimpses of Wishes here and there.

15855684945_58e04f002c_z.jpg

Most of the pics during this are just bad…

15668148898_6cb02b2ff8_z.jpg

Look…It’s the Blue Fairy!

15855003112_70da2c21f1_z.jpg

We probably should have ridden it during Wishes while crowds were really low, but clearly we waited…and now we’re in a mess of people running towards the Space Mountain queue. Stand by still didn’t look too bad…so we get in line…

Everything was pretty uneventful except that I had an awful time trying to get the backpack in place. I don’t know how I’ve done it in the past, but clearly…I was having ISSUES! Major issues! I finally got it wedged in place, but it was pretty comical to watch me try and get it out and get out of the car after the ride. The ride itself was great as ever, but for whatever reason, DH got bumped around a lot more than me...more on that on day 5.

We’re both pretty tired at this point, so we head towards the MK exit. I realize as we hit MSUSA that the 2nd running of MSEP was about to happen. DH really didn’t want to stay for the whole parade, but I begged and pleaded for him to deal with it until the drum goes by. We found a spot on the street very close to where the parade starts. I was back to being giddy because I was going to get to see the lights go out again.

My pics aren’t great…but this is what I got of what he agreed to watch…

Yup...probably my worst ever MSEP pics!

So, we left MK…DH wanted to take the monorail…so we head up the ramp, but we just missed the closest one on the resort loop.

15829762056_7d399401a9_z.jpg

I could see a boat coming into the dock…so we headed down there to grab the boat back to the Poly…

I had been craving dessert all night, so I had another cake picnic on our resort room floor before heading to bed. :hungry:

And that concludes Day 3!

Still a great great report! Thanks for sharing!!

Thank you :)

Great finish to a night at Magic Kingdom. I haven't seen the electrical parade in years. Following along.

I grew up with MSEP, so I kind of love it :inlove: It's not what it used to be, but I still prefer it over Spectro (I know that's blasphemy to many).

I've never done any park at night other than Epcot. I know I know! Sacrilege! A must this upcoming trip.

WOW!!! I mean AK is one thing, but no Fantasmic! or Wishes!??!?!? :jawdrop: You must correct that!

Ditto!

I'm kind of sitting here in limbo, so I thought it might be a nice time to try and get in a post or 2. It's the last day of school before holiday break, and I’m sitting here waiting until I can pick up some cupcake, grab my fruit tray and head up to the school. It’s also pouring here, so I’m praying for parking that’s not a half a mile away. And yes, I’m buying cupcakes! I made a holiday cake earlier this week and it’s made me realize that I’m officially burned out on cakes (making them, that is). Still, this is what I made…

10869621_10205686400547413_8302445883874079768_o.jpg

10850222_10205686401787444_2880893253109670020_n.jpg

…it’s an old log cabin with a snow covered roof…decorated in gingerbread house chic. The cake is at least pretty decadent. It’s a brandy chocolate cake, filled with cherries, covered in dark chocolate buttercream, and the fondant is kirschwasser flavored. The roof is a rice krispie treat. I think I had German chocolate cake on the brain. Still, it burned me out to the point that I just couldn’t do cupcakes for K’s class and I went semi-homemade for the cookies at their after school program. It’s all good though…because I get to make homemade latkes tonight. YUM!!! OK…enough about my holiday food joys and woes…

Day 4

When we went to bed on the night of day 3, I wasn’t sure if I’d be doing another solo breakfast. I guess with day 4 breakfast being just 15 minutes later (7:30am vs. 7:15am) and more convenient location (at the Poly vs. 1 monorail stop away)…DH decided to join me. So, we got ready and headed over to the GCH. It is also kind of funny that the Poly has sort of a morning vibe like the other resorts that host a character breakfast. Every morning that you head into the GCH and up those stairs, you see a crowd of people waiting or coming in for breakfast at ‘Ohana. I’m not a huge fan of ‘Ohana breakfast (bad food experience), but the sight always triggered fond memories of the characters and the staff on our one breakfast visit.

OK, enough reminiscing about ‘Ohana…we had other breakfast plans…

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was FINALLY going to eat breakfast at KONA!!! They were still getting situated, so I took a few pics while we waited to be seated…

…I knew exactly what I’d be ordering. 2 words….TONGA TOAST!

Holy cow!!!!!!!!!! AMAZING! Loved DH’s too!

So, Kona really deserved every single rave review it receives for breakfast. I was also impressed with our server. It seems that most of the Kona servers…at least it was the case that morning…were quite tenured and very knowledgeable. I was talking to our server about how to make Tonga Toast…how they have the YouTube video, but how the bread is the key. I wish I’d written it down, but he gave me the name of the bread they use. So yeah…we’ll definitely be returning to Kona! And like GFC, it’s pretty kind to the wallet.

After breakfast…we head out to wait for a monorail. Not sure why, but I decided to take a pic of the construction on the water features outside…or lack thereof.

We head back out and grab a monorail. We were headed to Epcot and neither of us felt like walking to the TTC…so monorail it is!!!

15242979833_d287987dac_z.jpg

The parking lot was super empty, but I noticed something odd that I’ve never seen before…or maybe just never noticed in the past. There were wheelchairs all over the parking lot! Odd…

Look, it’s a line of cars on the way in…

***OK...about time to head out for my cupcakes. I really should be more excited about their parties and what not, but I jut feel like :grumpy::hungover::in pain:

I take that back, we have stayed to watch all the fireworks but we have never ride rides at night. Have seen Wishes, MSEP, Fantasmic and Illuminations all in park just never rode any rides afterwards or during.

I was sitting there thinking when reading your post, "I could have sworn her last TR put them at a couple of the nighttime shows." Still, I get fuzzy minded with this stuff, so I wasn't sure. Either way, I feel much better that you've been in the parks for at least some of the night stuff. Still, MK is definitely a park to experience after dark. I think we only do DHS after dark during Osborne Lights. I guess once everything gets into full swing with AK, that'll be an interesting night park...Everest in the dark! :)

Alrighty...going to try and get in a few posts before bed tonight. This may also be my last post before Christmas since I have things like house cleaning and cookies that need some attention. I'm gathering you can probably guess which is the priority vs. which I'd prefer doing.

So, I left off with us on day 4, on the monorail...

Not sure why, but I decided to take pics as we made that loop inside the park before coming to a stop…

This was the least amount of time we’ve ever had to wait with a FP. We were both kind of shocked. Yes, we’ve been cleared for take off!

15676649847_b713766cef_z.jpg

We did have something rather strange happen. The loading for Soarin’ is usually pretty organized. Normally, we follow our row in and we sit in the order in which we entered in the row to which we were assigned. Well, our row gets in there and a random family that entered from one of the other doors for one of the other vehicles decided to just pick a different row/vehicle. I hate to say it, but the CMs manning Soarin’s were pretty surly that morning and there were none positioned to guide everyone into their proper rows. So, I think that’s where the blame lies. It was all sorted out, but I’ve never had this happen before.

I like Soarin’, but I really hope the rumors are true about a new film. It’s time.

And we’re done and on our way out…

It’s no secret that I loved the original and miss the Rainbow Corridor, but this is the only version my kids know and it does make them happy. So, I can at least associate some happiness with the current incarnation.

***OK, that's it for now. If I don't get a chance to post before Thursday, I want to wish all those celebrating a very Merry Christmas. And while a bit belated, to anyone celebrating... a Happy Hanukkah (I'm about ready to burst from overindulging on latkes!!!)! And just a general happy holidays to everyone :)

I hope everyone who was celebrating had a wonderful Christmas! I am going to try and get in a couple of posts this morning, but it may be a short addition to this TR. I'm nursing a cold, the house is still a war zone with toys, I have family in town, and I'm hoping to get 10 miles in this morning...BUT...nobody else is awake right now, so I'm hoping to take advantage of the peace!

So, when I last posted, it was day 4 and we were headed in to Imagination...

I know he’s not the Genie here, but I couldn’t help but think, “Genie, you’re free!” when I saw this.

For whatever reason, the girls tend to have post-ride meltdowns…so, it’s been a LOOOOOOOOONG time since we’ve been able to really explore in here. Like Sea Base Alpha long! We start with the manatees. If you didn’t know…I adore manatees. I had a Save the Manatee FL plate when I lived in FL, I was once surprised by a manatee while in the water, and we used to see them all of the time when kayaking and when we kept our boat in the Homosassa Springs area.

We notice that they are about to do their dolphin presentation. There’s a large crowd to our left that’s waiting, but we’re in the next section and there’s pretty much nobody there…so we get on the edge of our area to catch at least the start of the dolphin festivities…

Busy day, but I'm going to try and post a little before I get back to everything that needs to get done. I have to get in some elliptical time and some weights/exercise ball + taping off a bedroom for painting (Frozen themed room- OY!). At least all of my errands are done...I think!

Back to SSE on Day 4...

Pretty quick getting up to the front of the line….

I remember waiting to get on and there was a 7 or 8 yr old boy riding with us. His mom said he loved it and I was assured I’d be fine. OK…I love thrill rides, but I can’t go on the teacups with DH (he’s a spin junkie!) without feeling sickly for hours. Now, the good news…I was fine during the ride…didn’t need the air sickness bag…and actually really enjoyed the intensity of orange DURING the ride. This wouldn’t last…my condition would deteriorate over the course of the next hour and stick with me for a chunk of the day.

On our way out, I was still feeling good…

15677739778_0a833f64d2_z.jpg

…unfortunately, we saw an older gentleman and woman sitting and trying to recover. They did not look too good! Probably shouldn’t have ridden.

***OK, time to hop on the elliptical!
