Trip Report MAY THE SPORK BE WITH YOU!!! - a Kid-Free F&W Trip Report

Hi all!!! Well, we’re back from our 6 kid-free days at WDW (yes, much sadness), but now I at least get to share our trip with all of you! If you’re new to my trip reports, my name is Sandy. I did a pre-trip report for this one, but it wasn’t exactly my best work…i.e. I neglected it much of the time. Bad Sandy! Oh well, the real report will be significantly better. I swear, this is probably one of my best trips to WDW- EVER!!!

As many of you know…my reports are heavily picture infused things…mainly because I take TONS of pics so you can “walk” along with me. I took close to 4,000 pics this time…some better than others…but all to help paint the full picture of this trip. I will get into all of the pictures and heavy duty Disney stuff, but first a little background on the days leading up to the trip. Sorry- not much in the way of pictures in this portion, but I promise you…there really are TONS of pictures to come.

So, it’s the evening of November 4th and I’m prepping for our departure on November 7th. DH gets home as I’m putting our girls to bed and informed me that his mom was coming by to talk to us. Ok, so I’m now freaking out. His mom was supposed to have the girls stay with her so we could go on vacation, so this didn’t sound good. We’ve also have really bad luck before all of our recent WDW trips. I think we’d all agree that the car accident last year was the worst, but I am starting to think we’re cursed. In any event, my MIL comes by and drops a bit of a bomb on us. It’s really sad and scary stuff…I’m not at liberty to share the details…but from a safety standpoint, we couldn’t have the girls stay with her at her house. Thankfully, she was willing to stay at our house- so the big problem was solved, but now I had to work in time to deep clean the house. I mean, I was planning on a light cleaning…but I had to pack for me as well as for the girls (school day stuff, softball stuff, etc.) + I had to make a birthday cake!

Many of you know me from the Cake Talk thread over in the dining section, but I also make my own custom cakes on the side. My younger one’s bday is Nov 6th, so I had to have a cake the day before we went out of town…and of course she wanted something crazy (gee, I wonder who encourages this kind of madness??? ;) ). She wanted a 'fluffy' killer whale cake…just like her furry Shamu-esque plush named “Shammie.” Thankfully, the cake was fairly easy…well, minus the nearly 7 tubs of black food coloring I needed to achieve black buttercream. So, here’s the finished product as well as a pic with my ‘model.’

Day 1

So, the house is clean, the cake is done and we’re pretty much packed…and it’s after midnight…so, it’s officially our departure day!!! Our flight from Houston Hobby was supposed to take off at 6:15am, so we had to leave the house around 4am. I got about 3 hours of sleep, packed up the car, said good-bye to the girls (who were still in bed- asleep - MIL was in the guest bedroom), and drove to the airport. The roads were dead, but the airport was surprisingly busy. It took a while to get through security, but we at least had a good laugh when checking our bags. The ladies helping us overheard that it was a kid free trip to Disney and they made sure everyone in the area knew we were heading there without the kids. Most of the people just looked really confused, but we got a good laugh.

After DH forgetting to empty his pockets at security and having some minor issues, we make our way out to the gate and wait. Hey, at least it looks like we’re going to be on time.

15721134116_2d92fb6622_z.jpg

Boarding and take off are pretty uneventful. I’m utterly exhausted and fall asleep shortly after. I mean, I tend to sleep on planes even when I’m well rested, but this was that uncontrollable … sort of passing out … kind of deep sleep. I didn’t sleep for the entire flight. In fact, I woke up to a lovely cloud filled sky…

15558965649_e7978f5385_z.jpg

Actually, shortly after this pic the clouds started to clear and I could tell we were approaching the Florida coastline…

15124895804_6e5b2f0ec1_z.jpg

Ok, I actually took a series of pics as we approached. I guess this is the air equivalent of people taking pics of the state signs when crossing the state line on a road trip…

15558970619_5758715a2c_z.jpg

15744851845_37271be2ef_z.jpg

I also realized that we were flying over the Tampa/St Pete area. My parents lived just outside of St Pete for a few years after leaving Gainesville and before heading to the Ft. Lauderdale area. I took this pic because I noticed a large pink building right at the coastline. Anyone who knows this area knows this is the Don Cesar hotel. Unfortunately, even when cropping, blowing up and saturating the colors in the pic below…you can’t really see that there’s a big pink hotel…but it’s there- I swear it is!!!

15559691397_a7cb688a40_z.jpg

Now, I really enjoy being able to pick out familiar sites from the air. I regret not having my DSLR out with the telephoto hooked up for this, but you’re just going to have to take my word for it with the pics below. See, I usually can pick out Epcot from the air with no problem- in fact, it's why I intentionally sat us on this side of the plane. I mean, the “Swalphin” is super obvious and SSE kind of stands out. Still, for whatever reason, I couldn’t find them for the life of me. Then I spotted something…something I’ve never noticed before from the air. I’m sitting there thinking, “man, that white blob over there kind of reminds me of Space Mountain.” Then I realize the buildings I’m looking at to the right are BLT and the Contemporary!!! And while it was more a white blip from the air…I could see…THE CASTLE!!! And as my eyes adjusted and started picturing the WDW map in my head, I realized I could see the Poly, the GF, and yes…I was also able to pick out SSE and the Swalphin too! I could see all of this until shortly before landing. Talk about WELCOME HOME!!! I'll share one of these pics, but it's really tough to spot any of this...

15742948251_c0b2b0bf94_z.jpg

I tried cropping and zooming, but it’s still really hard to pick them out…but I swear they are there!
So, landing was uneventful and we were soon ready for the first “ride” of our trip.

15786080132_a1c573680e_z.jpg

15786077812_4d55c3535d_z.jpg

Kind of sad...I am now using the DSLR (vs my phone), but I'm so jittery from excitement that I can't take a decent shot!

I also had temporary amnesia…or magical euphoric memory loss (your pick)…and forgot where to find DME. Of course, the jetways now have it labeled on there…but I guess I also had some selective blindness upon arrival. So, I sucked it up, went to Information, and got directions to DME. I was kind of embarrassed, but clearly I needed the help. At least the info was correct…

15786075722_8f80bceeb0_z.jpg

As we get down to the ground level and start heading towards the DME area, I start seeing DME and DCL buses…and I’ll admit it, I got kind of misty. Thankfully, DH didn’t notice because I would have been mocked considerably. We had our magic bands on, so getting through everything was a breeze. In fact, the only tough part was convincing DH that our checked baggage would be delivered to our hotel. It’s like he’s never been to WDW before!!! We’re directed to line 2 and make our way all the way to the front.

15599083698_069b6c63e9_z.jpg

We’re the only ones there and it kind of looks like we just missed a bus for our grouping of resorts. Just then the CMs manning that section of lines asked which resort we were headed to for our trip. I said we’re going to the Poly and magically, they opened the ropes and led us out to a bus. Sadly, it was a magical yellow Mears bus, but hey…it would get us where we needed to go.

15786065312_56b5300a1a_z.jpg

Although, I was kind of jealous with all of the DCL buses around us…just something about having the Disney labeling on the bus. OK- feeling quite shallow right about now!

15599673840_09c0b70d1a_z.jpg

Still, I really can’t complain…we were on a bus, that bus was nearly full and about ready to go. I think we waited less than 5 minutes to start heading towards the resorts. This was also our first time seeing the new DME video and can I just say…I HATE IT!

15782627781_b6f1dd5e43_z.jpg

Before ever crossing onto Disney property, we saw a sign that Disney was near!

15782619541_40b2729c6a_z.jpg

Yeah- the Characters in Flight balloon is kind of a give-a-way that Disney is near! Shortly after spotting the balloon, one of the best views on earth came into sight…

15760802106_e432775984_z.jpg

15784481195_c639c6a9a0_z.jpg

I was obviously not in a good seat to snap any good pics, but I think most of us know that we were getting ready to pass under the Maingate!!! I remember being really frustrated after this as well. I wanted to check in on Facebook, basically confirming that we’re officially “inside the MAGIC BUBBLE,” but it wasn’t until we were farther in that I was able to get ‘Walt Disney World” to come up as a check in option. i.e. I didn’t want any of the parks or resorts. OK- minor annoyance…I know!

More to come on Day 1! Thanks for reading!

So, the holidays are kicking my butt! Hence my delay in posting more to the TR. I'm hoping to get at least 3 posts up tonight. We'll see if Flickr wants to play nice.

OK, so when I left off we were day 3 in Japan...

Nothing really interested us until we got to South Korea. We got the roasted pork lettuce wrap with kimchi slaw. We also opted to try the Soju Fruit Slushy featuring Jinro Chamisul Sojo…

We both really liked this…well the pork, that is. The drink…just like the other frozen…was tasty, but weak.

And then I took a pic of these rocks…

15855513052_905403eeef_z.jpg

Actually, it was about this time I noticed an elderly man standing next to us. We had a bench, which is a hard commodity to come by at F&W. DH and I both tried to offer him our seats, but he refused. I tried getting up and insisting, but he kept insisting we sit. And of course, as soon as we got up, he sat. We tried.

We decided to go back to China…

15830317726_e0a9e31550_z.jpg

I know DH got another Kung Fu Punch and I got the Beijing roasted duck in hoisin sauce.

15236486063_978302d745_z.jpg

DH liked his drink, but didn’t love my food. I liked it, but man were those onions STRONG! DH’s complaint was that the bun, which I’m gathering was similar to the one used for the Mongolian beef, was too much like the flavor of a fortune cookie. I liked it…it was different.

So, we decided to head into Norway and just relax for a bit. We also paid our respects to Maelstrom. Was it a favorite ride? Not really, but we enjoyed it and we certainly have a lot of memories tied in with that ride.

The Wine & Dine half had been run the previous night and I really wanted a pic of the medal. I don’t know why…just did. I said sure…if I can photograph your medals!

I always want to buy a stein....not sure why. Not a beer drinker. And I want your hannukah latke recipe. I've always wanted to try them but never have given it a whirl.

I do too. I do drink, but as you can probably gather, I'm more of a cocktail kind of person. I do like beer and ciders, but I just haven't been in a beer/cider place since the summer.

I can try and give you my recipe for latkes, but it's not an exact science. The big thing...I just know what it's supposed to taste like when raw. Still, this is what I use to make latkes...

- russet potatoes
- yellow onion
- vegetable oil (canola or similar oils will work...just not olive)
- matzo meal
- eggs
- salt and pepper to taste
***and if you want to make it really interesting throw in some zucchini and carrots

* I use my mandolin to shred my potatoes and onions, but a food processor will do just fine- just don't liquefy them. They should be shredded potato shoe string hash brown consistency...not mashed potatoes. I also usually do not peel my potatoes. I really don't know the proper quantity on these things, but as a guess, I'd probably say 6-8 cups of shredded potato to 2 cups of shredded onion
* In a mixing bowl, I combine the potatoes and onion along with 4-6 eggs, about 2 cups of matzo meal, and a cup or two of vegetable oil. I combine it all together until it's sort of paste-like...messy paste with crazy onions and potatoes sticking out of it.
* this is when I salt and pepper it. I go fairly heavy on the salt and pretty light on the pepper
* you'll want to add about 1/4" of vegetable oil to a frying pan, heat it up and add your first batch of latkes. I do nothing special to form my latkes. I usually just use a large oval serving or soup spoon from my casual dinnerware to scoop out a heaping spoonful of the mixture and just carefully plop it into the frying pan. I can usually fit up to 5 in a frying pan at once.
* you can tell that the bottom side is just about done because the edges will start to appear golden brown. At this point, you'll flip each one with a spatula to cook the other side. If they still look undercooked in the middle just give them a smidge longer to cook.
* when done, remove from the oil and place on a plate lined with 3-6 paper towels to absorb the excess oil. I usually give them 5-10 minutes to cool since they can be REALLY hot.

So, that's pretty much it :)

OK...going to try and get in a small update tonight. The holidays are still kicking my butt and it's going to be a late night.

So, we were shopping the last time I posted...

I initially thought this was an apron, but I guess it's an advent calendar.

And then ornaments. Like the Cheshire Cat one…but why not any better Donald ornaments?!?!?

Things really filled up while I was waiting for him to get back. I reserved his seat with my bag, but this family sat down next to me and asked about the space. Thankfully, they were good with it and actually had a sense of humor. I told the older gentleman at the end that my husband was sitting next to me…he told me that my husband is very small. LOL I clarified that he was off getting beer…he told me that was only OK if DH was bringing back beer for everyone.

***OK, that’s it for tonight. I have a TON of cake work ahead of me. I also apologize to those whose trip reports I’d been following. I promise to read more once things calm down.

I gotta remember to look for those soaps next trip. I know quite a few people that would love them.

You can actually buy them online too. I was thinking about getting someone the Hooters soap...it has owls on it :)

I picture your husband in the Ole picture going, "Ole ole, ole ole," and shimmying. It's burned in my head now, and I just invented the scenario 30 seconds ago.

I made a Donald (and Daisy, and Mickey, and Minnie) ornament this weekend!

In South Dakota they have soaps like that are made with things like buffalo fat. They're very good for the skin. The chapstick is awesome, if you don't think it through.

If you change the dance a bit...you might actually be about right. He doesn't really dance, but when he does...I think he must be playing "air maracas." It's bad.

Yeah...I'd have to put the soap source out of my mind, but I'm sure there are lots of things I wouldn't use if I really thought about the origins.

What a wonderful time walking around the world in Epcot. All of the pictures are really fantastic and due justice for all the food and drinks.Once again you have captured some details that are overlooked by my family. Thanks for the refresher. Following along.

These are the details that we never get to appreciate when we've got the kids with us. I guess it's one of the big benefits of a kid free trip :) Thanks for reading!

Yeah...the holidays are still being absolutely brutal to me. I need a few extra days this week and for the schools to stop coming up with things to drain my bank account of even more $!

OK...so, we were getting ready for Eat to the Beat when I last posted...

So, DH is back…we have beer and the concert starts.

It was also cool because all kind of people were swing dancing around the theater area…

Really not sure what I was doing here...but I took 2 of them. Hmmmm....

I guess I was just tired and zoning out during the concert.

We stayed for most of the concert, but I was getting antsy and wanted to go. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy was awesome…really great live and totally got the crowd into the show.

So, we head to the IG as we’ve decided we’re done with Epcot for the day. DH also stopped to get the backpack and I took a few pics in the shop before heading out.

We opted to run through BC and grab a bus to MK.

And our bus has arrived…

And we've arrived at MK...

And we’re in the park! Obviously, the castle hasn’t been “dreamlighted” yet for the night.

We hit a FP+ kiosk to see what might be options. DH isn’t thrilled with me, but I book the Jungle Cruise for a slot after dinner. And now time to find dinner.

We were originally supposed to have dinner at Narcoosee’s, but as I said earlier, I canceled the ADR. So, we opt to do something we rarely do…quick service. No, there’s nothing wrong with quick service, but I just never feel as relaxed during my meal when we’re not at a TS spot + I have a bit of a phobia involving trays. Long story, but I cringe at the mere thought of carrying around food on a tray. Still, that was my plan for the night…to go with the flow and just go for quick service. We popped into Peco Bill, but it was INSANE in there. I think that’s another reason I hate QS. At peak hours, it’s a madhouse and it just makes me very anxious and uncomfortable. It’s so bad in there that we move on and decide to go to Columbia Harbor House.

The crowds were heavy at CHH too, but I could at least see seating available in there. So, that was a little bit less of a panic for me. It takes a while to get through the line…

…but we finally have some food and we head upstairs. DH got chicken and fish platter and I got the lobster and shrimp mac & cheese…

15853772881_5795a2a6c1_z.jpg

I should have gotten the tuna or the hummus. I just wasn’t in the mood for either of those things. Unfortunately, both thought our food was YUCK! I mean, the seafood on mine was actually OK, but the macaroni was really gross. And I love macaroni and cheese. I know CHH is touted one of the best quick service spots, but this food was just not good.

I take some very dark pics during our meal…

DH doesn't enjoy this nearly as much as I do, but I love the corny jokes. I even mentioned something to him about the backside of water and he just looked at me all confused.

Look, it’s Trader Samta!

After this, we head to PotC!!! Yo ho!!!

After Pirates, we decide to head over to Frontierland since riding BTMRR at night is one of our fave things to do in MK.

After our crazy train ride…we thought about wandering over towards Fantasyland or Tomorrowland. As we hit Frontierland and start heading towards Liberty Square area, the intro for MSEP comes on. I literally stopped in my tracks. I think I enjoy that moment the lights go out almost as much as the parade itself. DH was trying to get me to keep moving, but I begged him to just wait so I could have that lights going out moment. OK…moment over (+ lots of lag time before the fairies appear) and moving on towards Fantasyland. Took a few castle pics before we moved on…

I'm still very bothered that the color schemes are now all Frozen related. They used to do so many color combos on the castle. Sad!

***That's it for now. Thanks for reading :)

I hear the jokes for the jungle cruise gets changed towards Christmas jokes. I really love the castle pictures and how you caught the reflection in the water. When you mention CHH I think of lobster rolls and my kids wanted to try the mac n cheese lobster. Following along.

Yeah, the whole schtick was changed up for the holidays. I personally love that goofy kind of humor, and I think our skipper could tell that I was thoroughly amused. He was a good one! I really like doing the castle reflection thing. I think it was 2012 when I was able to get reflections from the dessert party and had MSEP in the shots as well. I know there have been complaints about a lack of meat in the lobster roll, but my mac definitely wasn't lacking. Just wish it was better mac.
