Trip Report MAY THE SPORK BE WITH YOU!!! - a Kid-Free F&W Trip Report

Hi all!!! Well, we’re back from our 6 kid-free days at WDW (yes, much sadness), but now I at least get to share our trip with all of you! If you’re new to my trip reports, my name is Sandy. I did a pre-trip report for this one, but it wasn’t exactly my best work…i.e. I neglected it much of the time. Bad Sandy! Oh well, the real report will be significantly better. I swear, this is probably one of my best trips to WDW- EVER!!!

As many of you know…my reports are heavily picture infused things…mainly because I take TONS of pics so you can “walk” along with me. I took close to 4,000 pics this time…some better than others…but all to help paint the full picture of this trip. I will get into all of the pictures and heavy duty Disney stuff, but first a little background on the days leading up to the trip. Sorry- not much in the way of pictures in this portion, but I promise you…there really are TONS of pictures to come.

So, it’s the evening of November 4th and I’m prepping for our departure on November 7th. DH gets home as I’m putting our girls to bed and informed me that his mom was coming by to talk to us. Ok, so I’m now freaking out. His mom was supposed to have the girls stay with her so we could go on vacation, so this didn’t sound good. We’ve also have really bad luck before all of our recent WDW trips. I think we’d all agree that the car accident last year was the worst, but I am starting to think we’re cursed. In any event, my MIL comes by and drops a bit of a bomb on us. It’s really sad and scary stuff…I’m not at liberty to share the details…but from a safety standpoint, we couldn’t have the girls stay with her at her house. Thankfully, she was willing to stay at our house- so the big problem was solved, but now I had to work in time to deep clean the house. I mean, I was planning on a light cleaning…but I had to pack for me as well as for the girls (school day stuff, softball stuff, etc.) + I had to make a birthday cake!

Many of you know me from the Cake Talk thread over in the dining section, but I also make my own custom cakes on the side. My younger one’s bday is Nov 6th, so I had to have a cake the day before we went out of town…and of course she wanted something crazy (gee, I wonder who encourages this kind of madness??? ;) ). She wanted a 'fluffy' killer whale cake…just like her furry Shamu-esque plush named “Shammie.” Thankfully, the cake was fairly easy…well, minus the nearly 7 tubs of black food coloring I needed to achieve black buttercream. So, here’s the finished product as well as a pic with my ‘model.’

Day 1

So, the house is clean, the cake is done and we’re pretty much packed…and it’s after midnight…so, it’s officially our departure day!!! Our flight from Houston Hobby was supposed to take off at 6:15am, so we had to leave the house around 4am. I got about 3 hours of sleep, packed up the car, said good-bye to the girls (who were still in bed- asleep - MIL was in the guest bedroom), and drove to the airport. The roads were dead, but the airport was surprisingly busy. It took a while to get through security, but we at least had a good laugh when checking our bags. The ladies helping us overheard that it was a kid free trip to Disney and they made sure everyone in the area knew we were heading there without the kids. Most of the people just looked really confused, but we got a good laugh.

After DH forgetting to empty his pockets at security and having some minor issues, we make our way out to the gate and wait. Hey, at least it looks like we’re going to be on time.

15721134116_2d92fb6622_z.jpg

Boarding and take off are pretty uneventful. I’m utterly exhausted and fall asleep shortly after. I mean, I tend to sleep on planes even when I’m well rested, but this was that uncontrollable … sort of passing out … kind of deep sleep. I didn’t sleep for the entire flight. In fact, I woke up to a lovely cloud filled sky…

15558965649_e7978f5385_z.jpg

Actually, shortly after this pic the clouds started to clear and I could tell we were approaching the Florida coastline…

15124895804_6e5b2f0ec1_z.jpg

Ok, I actually took a series of pics as we approached. I guess this is the air equivalent of people taking pics of the state signs when crossing the state line on a road trip…

15558970619_5758715a2c_z.jpg

15744851845_37271be2ef_z.jpg

I also realized that we were flying over the Tampa/St Pete area. My parents lived just outside of St Pete for a few years after leaving Gainesville and before heading to the Ft. Lauderdale area. I took this pic because I noticed a large pink building right at the coastline. Anyone who knows this area knows this is the Don Cesar hotel. Unfortunately, even when cropping, blowing up and saturating the colors in the pic below…you can’t really see that there’s a big pink hotel…but it’s there- I swear it is!!!

15559691397_a7cb688a40_z.jpg

Now, I really enjoy being able to pick out familiar sites from the air. I regret not having my DSLR out with the telephoto hooked up for this, but you’re just going to have to take my word for it with the pics below. See, I usually can pick out Epcot from the air with no problem- in fact, it's why I intentionally sat us on this side of the plane. I mean, the “Swalphin” is super obvious and SSE kind of stands out. Still, for whatever reason, I couldn’t find them for the life of me. Then I spotted something…something I’ve never noticed before from the air. I’m sitting there thinking, “man, that white blob over there kind of reminds me of Space Mountain.” Then I realize the buildings I’m looking at to the right are BLT and the Contemporary!!! And while it was more a white blip from the air…I could see…THE CASTLE!!! And as my eyes adjusted and started picturing the WDW map in my head, I realized I could see the Poly, the GF, and yes…I was also able to pick out SSE and the Swalphin too! I could see all of this until shortly before landing. Talk about WELCOME HOME!!! I'll share one of these pics, but it's really tough to spot any of this...

15742948251_c0b2b0bf94_z.jpg

I tried cropping and zooming, but it’s still really hard to pick them out…but I swear they are there!
So, landing was uneventful and we were soon ready for the first “ride” of our trip.

15786077812_4d55c3535d_z.jpg

Kind of sad...I am now using the DSLR (vs my phone), but I'm so jittery from excitement that I can't take a decent shot!

I also had temporary amnesia…or magical euphoric memory loss (your pick)…and forgot where to find DME. Of course, the jetways now have it labeled on there…but I guess I also had some selective blindness upon arrival. So, I sucked it up, went to Information, and got directions to DME. I was kind of embarrassed, but clearly I needed the help. At least the info was correct…

15786075722_8f80bceeb0_z.jpg

As we get down to the ground level and start heading towards the DME area, I start seeing DME and DCL buses…and I’ll admit it, I got kind of misty. Thankfully, DH didn’t notice because I would have been mocked considerably. We had our magic bands on, so getting through everything was a breeze. In fact, the only tough part was convincing DH that our checked baggage would be delivered to our hotel. It’s like he’s never been to WDW before!!! We’re directed to line 2 and make our way all the way to the front.

15599083698_069b6c63e9_z.jpg

We’re the only ones there and it kind of looks like we just missed a bus for our grouping of resorts. Just then the CMs manning that section of lines asked which resort we were headed to for our trip. I said we’re going to the Poly and magically, they opened the ropes and led us out to a bus. Sadly, it was a magical yellow Mears bus, but hey…it would get us where we needed to go.

15786065312_56b5300a1a_z.jpg

Although, I was kind of jealous with all of the DCL buses around us…just something about having the Disney labeling on the bus. OK- feeling quite shallow right about now!

15599673840_09c0b70d1a_z.jpg

Still, I really can’t complain…we were on a bus, that bus was nearly full and about ready to go. I think we waited less than 5 minutes to start heading towards the resorts. This was also our first time seeing the new DME video and can I just say…I HATE IT!

15782627781_b6f1dd5e43_z.jpg

Before ever crossing onto Disney property, we saw a sign that Disney was near!

15782619541_40b2729c6a_z.jpg

Yeah- the Characters in Flight balloon is kind of a give-a-way that Disney is near! Shortly after spotting the balloon, one of the best views on earth came into sight…

15760802106_e432775984_z.jpg

15784481195_c639c6a9a0_z.jpg

I was obviously not in a good seat to snap any good pics, but I think most of us know that we were getting ready to pass under the Maingate!!! I remember being really frustrated after this as well. I wanted to check in on Facebook, basically confirming that we’re officially “inside the MAGIC BUBBLE,” but it wasn’t until we were farther in that I was able to get ‘Walt Disney World” to come up as a check in option. i.e. I didn’t want any of the parks or resorts. OK- minor annoyance…I know!

More to come on Day 1! Thanks for reading!

Yes, that is one of the two docks used for the Discovery River Cruise (you boarded at one and disembarked at another.) We experienced the ride for the first time in the summer of 1998, shortly after AK opened. Since there were so few attractions at that time, lines were very long for everything. My extended family waited over an hour to board a boat in sweltering humidity...there was NOTHING to look at, except jungle foliage...the boat cruised very slowly, so there was no pleasant relief from the heat. Upon disembarking we simultaneously exclaimed, "That was it??!!" Even the kids were complaining.

The following year when the attraction was re-themed to "Radio Disney Cruise" we foolishly tried it again. Another long wait and the ride was exactly the same, save for the loud "Radio Disney" tunes (Hilary Duff, anyone?) played on the boat...in hindsight, the second ride WAS probably worse than the first .

That first summer also had us making the long trek to the train to Conservation Station (my 13-year old son called it the "Bataan Death March" since we all were about to die from the humidity) and there was nothing to do at Conservation Station once we arrived...except make the excruciating walk back.

Add to that trip very few animals on the safari and no gorillas to be seen on Pangani Trail, and the nightmare of "It's Tough To Be A Bug" which completely freaked out my youngest two...well, we were quickly soured on AK. Our early experience has forever made AK our least favorite park, even with all the improvements made since then.

And we have learned never to go in summer...we only visit during the cooler months.

You're making me thankful that DH and I skipped AK in 1998. We went in June, shortly after AK opened (thought it opened that spring), but neither of us had any desire to try it.

Well, that cruise...both versions...sounds utterly miserable. My kids were not fans of ITTBAG when they first did it either. In fact, I don't think we've done it since the 2010 trip. I think AK is very pretty and there are some things there that I do enjoy; however, our first visit to that park was in 2010 and it will forever be the park where we spent over 1/2 of our day with the kids being cranky. I mean...minus a few spurts of happiness early on and a grandma saves the day moment...this would be the happiest DD6 (just turned 2 here) would look much of the day...

5264655905_eca203124c_z.jpg

Now thankfully, we are pretty well conditioned for the warmer months. Not saying it's not hot, but our weather is often similar to Orlando. Actually, we went August of 2011 and it was significantly cooler at WDW than it was here. Of course, we were having an exceptional summer...drought and tons of triple digit heat days. FUN!

We did! We loved it and would recommend to just about everyone.

I wish Sammie would shift back into a pirate phase so I could justify booking it for her. Still think Pirate's League as a family might be fun. :)

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Before I get into the TR, I thought I'd share a funny Disney home decorating issue I'm having. So, our girls insist on sharing a room, so we surprised them with all kinds of Frozen stuff for the holidays. I picked 2 paint colors for the walls. The accent wall is a medium sort of turquoise, but the other 3 walls are "You Betcha Blue" from Disney's paint collection with Glidden. I've learned the hard way that I should have done the turquoise wall first, but not for any normal reason. It turns out that "You Betcha Blue" is also painter's tape blue...

Oh, and if you have a blue magic band...it's the same color as that too!

OK, back to day 5...

So, I was taking pics in the GF as we waited for our buzzer to go off for our late breakfast at 1900 PF.

...we were getting super hungry by this point, but the pics were helping distract me a bit. I think DH even went to check on things since they were now running late.

15682969650_7f5494908f_z.jpg

We're in...but now waiting to go to our table...

15868310521_05a28bf4ed_z.jpg

We finally get seated…maybe about 15 min late…

What’s really funny…we were put at the same table we were seated at in 2012. Not a fan of the table location, but with the crowds…I wasn’t going to whine.

Juice! Sporky approves of the juice!

15682774418_cd28aa6832_z.jpg

DH got food first, so I took a few more pics while I waited...

Sporky & butter...

First plate of food! Smoked salmon and dill spread are the stars!

15684260099_a2ce79e9bc_z.jpg

I was also in a panic…my beloved pecan sticky roll were nowhere to be seen! What the heck!??!?!?! While I like other food items at 1900 PF, those were the key reason for this ADR!

So, Pooh popped by first for a visit…

15844455426_dc2623f97c_z.jpg

15868275321_413502e3f0_z.jpg

(and this is why I don't like DH taking pics...just not the most flattering angles)

He was a very friendly Pooh!

Next up was more food. That sad pastry on there was the closest thing they had to a pecan sticky roll! And it was not good!

15682924310_707c36c47d_z.jpg

On the flipside, the bananas foster and strawberries with the Mickey waffles were DIVINE!

Tigger came by next and he was a RIOT. He signaled to me to be quiet as he came up behind DH. OMG…Tigger was about to POUNCE! Seriously…I just sat there, conversing, acting like nothing was about to happen. Then next thing ya know, Tigger comes down on DH’s shoulders. I was cracking up and he got a good laugh too.

15844436006_5ac45ca596_z.jpg

Since my beloved sticky buns were nowhere to be found, I felt compelled to load up on my 2nd favorite aspect of 1900 PF breakfast…the whole bagel schmear.

15247981844_1e6cf31197_z.jpg

DH also got an omelette…

15844427356_eaf369696a_z.jpg

Alice was up next…

She was very…Alice-like. DH also thinks she was flirting with him. LOL- I guess this makes up for my Donald moment a few days ago.

15870231565_0957ccdd6b_z.jpg

Hatter came by next…but was not as mad with me as I’d hoped.

15869591782_3938fcf6f0_z.jpg

15869589142_d2e48b2676_z.jpg

He was at least a little more “mad” with DH.

15247956604_95e7553064_z.jpg

We were stuffed and ready to get moving…so, we skipped meeting Mary Poppins. Obviously, I was disappointed that my fave sticky buns were gone, but the rest of the food at 1900 PF breakfast is still great as ever. I think the loss of the sticky buns has made Crystal Palace our official fave character breakfast, but 1900 PF is still very high up there and I would- without hesitation- recommend it to others.

We did head back out to check the progress of the GF gingerbread house.

The boat ride over seems so relaxing just a perfect way to start the day. The GF is such a beautiful Hotel. All of your pictures do it justice. Great pictures of the ginger bread house being built. Love the Park Fare break feast must do on next trip. Great character interactions. Following along.

I really enjoy all of the boats at WDW. Our girls first trip was in 2010 and I picked WL for that one, partly just because I wanted lots of boat rides :) The GF is very pretty and it was nice being at the Poly and being so close to the GF. I know some find it snooty, but there's a certain serenity about it to me. The gingerbread house was such a nice surprise...and as you'll see, it's such a huge obsession. I think you'll enjoy 1900 PF. This was our 3rd or 4th time eating breakfast there and we always enjoy it...honestly, some of our best character interaction. In 2010, we had a Winnie the Pooh who ran off with our pics around the restaurant to show everyone how awesome it was...in 2011, we had a Mary Poppins who sang with our girls...and on one of our visits, I remember Alice speaking in riddles and Tigger doing a bouncing contest with the kids. Just so much fun!

Really miss this :(

I've seen Mary with one, but never with two! Very cool.

If memory serves me correctly, you guys got to do the party twice last year too! Or was it 3x? Jealous :D At some point, I'd love to return to do MNSSHP, but with my new job ... I might be stuck going around Labor Day due to our busy season.

I've never seen the penguins before, so I was jumping up and down like a giddy child! My husband didn't quite grasp the reason for this...and I'm just squealing, "PENGUINS!!!!!" :hilarious:

I would like to stay at the GF at some point...it's just probably going to have to be a me only trip since I still haven't converted DH to being a fan. :banghead:

Hej there! I haven't been on this site for quite a while... busy times on this side of the ocean! Still a great report! Love all the pictures and off course following along!

Thanks! Just so much going on that logging in just doesn't always happen. I have so many days where I tell myself I'm going to log in and post more and a ton of things come up. That's life. :)

That is him in your paparazzi shot. He was signing as head pastry chef and creator a few days later.

Somehow, in confirming this info, I feel both justified in taking these pics and a little stalker-esque! I guess not a huge deal if he was out there signing stuff. I'm sure he enjoys all of the well deserved accolades.

DH hits up Sunshine Tree for a drink along the way and we got some really strange service. I’m wondering if a lot of people pop in there thinking they can get a Dole Whip. All I know is that the CMs all seemed really bothered when he just asked to make sure he could get a soft drink. I mean, all he wanted was a soda.

15844210076_da6f79bd2d_z.jpg

I just stood there and took pics...since not only was the CM helping us kind of annoyed...she was also slow.

We were right there, so I suggested the Tiki Room. He reluctantly agreed.

15870005735_6431242242_z.jpg

I took pics while we waited, but this time it was to keep me from getting annoyed and lashing out at people. It was more crowded than I’ve ever seen the Tiki Room and while we were already pretty well squished together, others were trying to slip through…even by changing rows and ducking under the rails. It was nuts!

So, it was finally time to go in…but it was a madhouse. We got in and found some seats…sadly, not near Jose and kind of jammed in at the end of a row. The father and son next to us weren’t exactly thrilled to be there either. I remember the son- who may have been 10 or 11- looked really bothered. The dad shared that same look and tried to commiserate with him by telling him he knows it’s a really stupid attraction, but they had no other options.

Oh well, their loss…I’m settling in for a lovely Tiki Room show…

(oh, and my Tiki Room pics were downright awful this time...so, I'm going to spare you from most of them)

When we get out, we think we might head to PotC…

When we get there, the wait is like 75 minutes. OK…not going to do that. Sooooo, we keep walking…

We head up to Fantasyland thinking maybe IASW would be an option…

Sadly, that also had a serious wait…something like 55 min.

We’re running out of options, so we opt to pop into Memento Mori on our way back towards Frontierland…

I’m not a major Haunted Mansion fan, so the shop isn’t as exciting for me…but I love the concept and love seeing all of this ride specific merch (as well as some of the special effects in the store).

I’d also secretly been hoping they might have some Haunted Mansion DDBs…not that I want one…but so I could see one in person. Alas, no bags!

We continue walking towards Frontierland- crowds are thick –and it’s still a long time before our BTMRR FP+. It’s only about 2pm, but we decide to just grab a seat in Frontierland and wait for FoF.

As you can see, we’re right up the way from Pecos Bill, so we’re in a good post parade spot to get out behind the parade and just head over to Big Thunder. Still, we have a long long time to wait. So, I snap more pics.

I also got really annoyed…my own fault, but still annoyed. In our section, the parade roping is a ways out from the curb. We sat down on the curb before they put up the ropes with the plan to move forward. We were getting up to move forward as the ropes were going in place and 2 large strollers parked in front of us. Before they got too comfy and spread out, we scooted forward and took the empty space between the strollers. Both families were totally oblivious, (yet still had ample space for their respective groups), so I know it was nothing intentional and it all worked out view-wise for all of us…so I can’t gripe too much.

Kind of a ridiculous pic, but I took this to remember the moment when we jumped in to claim our spot at the rope...

***OK, I'm going to stop for tonight. Next up is Festival of Fantasy...and I took A LOT of pictures. I really went nuts and I just can't get into all of that tonight. Thanks for reading :)

I guess you were very lucky when it came to the stroller move in. It always seem like the stroller parents think they deserve front row with there strollers. At least all worked out and everyone was able to see the parade. Following along.

Still following along with your report and enjoying it very much. My Wife and I love the Grand Floridian at Christmas. Both the tree and the gingerbread house are wonderful.

Thanks! The GF during the holidays is the best and it is definitely my favorite tree. I know everyone gushes over WL's...and while it's pretty (even had it right outside my room during our 2010 trip)...I LOVE the GF's tree. I tried getting a good pic of our girls in front of it for our 2012 Christmas card, but this gag pic was the best I got...

Obviously, the kids were more interested in the humor aspects over the elegance of the tree and overall setting.

I mean, we couldn't sit out in the street in anticipation of the ropes being put up...but I guess I just wasn't expecting the stroller brigade to move in so quickly. We were once that family at WDW with the mega SUV sized stroller, and while I'm sure there were times when I was oblivious to things going on around me, I really tried to be mindful of those around me at things like fireworks and parades (among other things). Oh well...like you said, we were lucky. :)

I have high hopes of making it through all of FoF tonight, but considering I took like a million and one pics (OK- that's a gross exaggeration- even for me)...well, I might not make it through all of it tonight. We shall see.

So, here we are on day 5, parked out on the street in Frontierland...waiting on Festival of Fantasy parade. Up first is the Philharmonic...

And almost parade time…

15249198394_3b922f7cd4_z.jpg

(excuse me, but can you tell me the time of the 3 o'clock parade? LOL)

It’s around this time that they also announce that park hours are being extended to midnight (was originally 10pm)...I'm now hatching a new little plan for the evening...an awesome plan!

Naturally, with it being Veteran’s Day, the family for the parade had a military father.

OK...still a few more minutes until it started, so I just found myself taking pics of "nothing." Well, nothing compared to what the parade has to offer from a photographic standpoint.

In my defense...and I'm sure many of us are like this...I have been so excited to see this parade. I watched the fashion show when the costumes were revealed, I followed all of the teasers that came out about the floats and I watched the first running of the parade live...running my computer feed through my TV. So, I was pumped to see FoF and by 2:55pm...I was like a kid waiting for Christmas morning. And then...there it was!!!!!!!!!!!!

The parade is finally starting and I've got a prime viewing spot!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was also able to come to the rescue…sort of. The mega stroller to our right had a couple of Anna and Elsa loving little girls. The parents seemed kind of disorganized and not really in the know about things. They hung out for a good 20 minutes (pre-parade_ discussing what they were to do, not fully grasping that they were standing along the parade route. I heard the one mom saying she still doesn’t see any fastpasses coming up for Anna and Elsa (yea…not going to happen). This is when I casually join their conversation. I informed her that Anna and Elsa are in the parade and while they won’t meet them, they may get lucky and have them turned their way for a nice wave and hi. And as luck would have it…they were turned our way…
And that’s Anna pointing out the girls…

15685561307_6d817b2902_z.jpg

By the time they were right in front of us, Anna and Elsa were going nuts from their float over these 2 little girls. The girls were ecstatic and yes, I cried a little. I mean, I was annoyed that these people had encroached on our spot, but that's not the kids' fault. So, if I can use my knowledge and add a little extra magic to their trip by encouraging them to stay and see the parade so their girls can see Anna and Elsa...well, I've done my "job."

Back to more parade pics...

Great pictures so far of the parade. It always feels great when the characters pick some children out of the audience and give a little extra attention so the kids fell special. Can't wait to see the remainder of the parade. Following along.
