Disney is a place for families with children!!!!! I was appalled at how no cast member told us we probably should not take her into that scene. We spoke to a cast member at the ride exit who smiled to cheer her up, but still that beginning scene needs to either be changed or removed if disney is going to market as a family park for children.
1. Disney is a place for FAMILIES.
2. Knowing your own child's fears, why would you even take her on an attraction called "The Haunted Mansion" in the first place?
3. This classic attraction has been around for decades and a version of it is in almost every Disney park worldwide so that proves it has a huge following.
4. Most kids love this attraction.
5. Don't join a forum to complain in a single post then never come back.

"I don't believe in playing down to children, either in life or in motion pictures. I didn't treat my own youngsters like fragile flowers, and I think no parent should. Children are people, and they should have to reach to learn about things, to understand things, just as adults have to reach if they want to grow in mental stature. Life is composed of lights and shadows, and we would be untruthful, insincere, and saccharine if we tried to pretend there were no shadows. Most things are good, and they are the strongest things; but there are evil things too, and you are not doing a child a favor by trying to shield him from reality."- Walt Disney

Seems like we're all having a discussion amongst ourselves since the OP hasn't returned. Why join a forum to make one post to complain and then not return?

I don't think the HM is scary enough. In fact...I like it when the ride stops in the middle of the ride because it makes it seem like ghosts are taking over and may take you right from your buggy at any moment.

*@#/!!!

This nonsense cost us Snow White. It has cost us Alien Encounter. And now it will cost us the Mansion.

The princess horde will not rest until the whole of the MK is rebuild into the image of a five year old.
Trouble is that by the time anyone could, under the best of circumstances, make changes like that, the 5 year old will be an adult that doesn't go to WDW because it's a boring kids place. Basically, the OP was more upset with herself then anything else, for not figuring out that a Haunted Mansion, might be scary, Duh! But, let's blame Disney for being insensitive to her child's personality. A situation that really isn't worthy of even this much cyberspace.

My son's first ride on HM was when he was 15 months. My daughter was 23 months the first time she got on MH. We talked, giggled, laughed and tickled on every dark ride during those first trips and no one ever got scared because it is pretend and they know it.

Death and fear is a part of Disney anyway, never forget it. Death by fire, storm, flood, hunters, hyenas, falling off walls or cliffs. Terrible stuff. It's all so family friendly.

One of my favorite examples of pure evil.

We recently returned from a 11 day Disney trip March 4 - 14. Exhausting but worth every minute of it. yet there are a few things I noticed and am concerned about, mainly the Haunted Mansion stretch room toward the beginning of the attraction. This was the first trip for our only daughter faire age 5. We thought this would be a good age for her first visit as it would be when she would be old enough to remember alot of the magic yet young enough to believe in the magic. One thing that really got her upset and in tears was the opening scene to Haunted Mansion at MagicKingdom. We never expected there would be a few moments of total darkness plus the lightning and scream nearly sent her into a fit. Disney is a place for families with children!!!!! I was appalled at how no cast member told us we probably should not take her into that scene. We spoke to a cast member at the ride exit who smiled to cheer her up, but still that beginning scene needs to either be changed or removed if disney is going to market as a family park for children. The rest of the ride is amazing, as our little princess faire could sit close to mommy and daddy if scared and there was no pitch black darkness. The music was fun and the characters inside the ride were more appropriate for children during most of the scenes. The beginning however really disturbed her and made her not wanting to ride too much more that day as she was still in shock of the total darkness. The majority of our vacation was great besides that one moment of terror in my daughters eyes. Please consider an update or change in the stretch room, maybe just to remove the total darkness to take into consideration the emotions and vulnerability of the child. When older she will learn to appreciate the ride for what it is as a classic.
Annnd what would have happened if the ride would have a had a stop somewhere in the darkness of the ride? Would you try to get up and leave? We were stuck once in the graveyard scene and once in the hall of knocking doors for over ten minutes each when my daughter was 3. She thought it was awesome. Her first time ever in the stretching room (also at 3) I covered her ears, not because she would be scared but because it's loud to young ones. Every child is different and perhaps you should have done your homework a little more for yours.

sorry, I forgot the posters name who did that virtual simulator interview with Katiebug's first clueless rant (assuming this is her 2nd!). If he has time, it would be hilarious to see this "interview" as well :hilarious:

Maybe we should just tailor the world to our children so they can grow up to be effective citizens...oh wait, adversity is what builds you up.
My son was also scared the first time and we ended up not riding it, but you know what? It's part of life, life is not perfect and is going to kick him in the .
The world won't adapt to him, he will have to adapt to the world and if I try to adapt the world around him to him, once he's out in the real world he's toast.
